Growing up in the 70s and 80s, I can remember a few...I think.

Poseidon Adventure is the only one that comes to mind, now. So, I took a peek at a list of disaster movies and was surprised to see that a whole slew of them have been released more recently as compared to 20 - 30 years ago. Must be the advances in special effects technologies.

Thinking that this one is gonna be a must see in theaters in November... 2012 (http://www.whowillsurvive2012.com/)

I don't understand how the aircraft carrier hit the white house from THAT direction? Given that the ocean is on the other side. Hmm.

Should be a good movie. I would like to watch it with my eyes closed to see if it is just a special effects flick or if the dialogue is what makes this movie float.

I also LOVED seeing cali slide off into the ocean :) Repent!

 Damnation Alley!!! I love that movie...

I also really like 28 Days Later. Apocalypse, zombies, end of the world (or at least the UK until the sequel came out)... what's not to like?!

I was such an A/V geek in college. I so wanted to be able to learn some computer graphic editing. I was in college at the wrong time...shoulda stuck it out longer, or added another undergrad degree to my belt. The editing wonder that I had just gotten into was "time-code (http://books.google.com/books?id=xJ49AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA54&lpg=PA54&dq=ives+time+code+editor&source=bl&ots=F4ButQ78aM&sig=UKUhEsxemnTY6IELI6OGcxkkAeU&hl=en&ei=4vLESpjZHpK6NZC7kPMH&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2#v=onepage&q=ives%20time%20code%20editor&f=false)" editing...oooooh...Our graphics were created with a very old CG machine. That didn't stop us from creating the nerdiest "party-tapes" in college, though...all with some of the lamest special fx you can think of from the early 80s.

I keep wondering how much time it took to recreate all those cities via computer graphics in 2012. Damn!

I wonder if that movie will be playing in IMAX, too.

It certainly was a wreck... I'd put it up there with twister. Not quite "end of the world" bad, but certainly nothing to write home about.

How is Braveheart a disaster movie, David?

I keep thinking of all the miniatures that were built for some of the previous disaster movies...especially the ones in the 70s and 80s...nothing like being able to tell you're watching a toy car get swallowed up by a crack in the ground...:).

Oh, but if we're talking just plain on special fx...1977 Star Wars FTW! Damn, I loved watching that in that crowded Century 21 Theater. Talk about movie firsts...even the sound was a first.

How is Braveheart a disaster movie, David? Because the two competing authoritarian states subverted the ignorant freedom loving populace for its on ends. Obviously a liberal plot.

I just thought we started talking about movies that we liked after a while.
Road Warrior comes to mind about good disaster movies.

In 1977 I wasn't even a twinkle yet. My folks were still oooh and aaahing over my sister. I did catch the remake back in the 90's and aside from the political add ons like Hans Solo not shooting first and everything flying in the background I liked it in the theaters. But I didn't like the later prequile ones at all.

Give me movies that make me hate my life because they are so great. Not wish live it because they make my life look fun. I guess what I'm trying to say is there should be more boobs in movies now-a-days. Although Metadork-9 might think I'm an idiot for liking boobs too. He seems more like an assman anyway.

Sir, you are close, but The Postman was Costner at his best!

In addition to The Postman, I submit the following.
A Boy and His Dog - Don Johnson's best
The Day of the Triffids
Battlefield Earth

Not just tossing these out, I have seen all of them multiple times.

The Triffids are watching.
