A friend of mine...I honestly can't imagine living like this. (http://vimeo.com/15310133)

I spent most of 1988 and 1989 in the bay area, lane splitting was the greatest. You could get around in rush hour while most people were stuck in gridlock.

I did it one year we were at Laguna, it was scary at first but then it was a nice way to get somewhere. But that was on the freeway. I couldn't imagine doing it in city traffic like this guy; what with folks turning and possible parked cars opening doors and stuff.

 That would make me nervous! Hopefully the drivers are used to that and act predictably. I would not trust the drivers out here enough to even attempt it.

Here I'd be afraid of some road rage Lexus swerving over on me. .. and blue Priuses.

The drivers out there expect it, so they know what's coming and watch for it. If they ever changed it here, I wouldn't want to do it, because no one looks for motorcyclists and that 1 person that didn't get the memo would pull a dick move and purposely block you.

Gotta say, IMO, your boy's video doesn't meet the requirements of lane splitting "Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent manner."

While there is a ton of interpretation in that, some of his moves didn't seem to be very safe, nor prudent.

Yeah, he has some fairly retarded splitting there. I grew up in SF, and rode their for years. Really miss being able to split lanes. Wish they would leagilize it here, but people dont expect it here and get all pissy. Ive done it to get out a torrential thunderstorm on I25, some dick took offense to it. I didnt bother to stick around and correct his thinking. No way I was going to play lightning rod like that dude in boulder a few years back.

Lane splitting is one of the many reasons I love Cali. It would be great if CO allowed it but the drivers out here suck. So even if it was legalized I don't think I would do it.

We have the good sized lanes to do it in, too. I miss lane splitting the most about California.

Having never lived in a place you could split lanes I dont know whats legal and whats not. But a lot of that didnt seem like lane splitting. At one point he splits two cars and cuts them off to turn right? I guess maybe I just dont have the burning desire to get to work that much quicker.

Who says you need to be in Cali to lane split? (Besides the law) I've lane split like that out here. Makes life much easier in rush hour.

I split lanes on I-70 sunday night before last. But it was only to rejoin my group in the crawl down the hill. I don't think the lanes on roads like Speer or Colfax etc are even wide enough to split like the video .. get an SUV and a bus side by side and it gets narrow real fast.

I cut my teeth riding a Vespa P200E around the streets and freeways of L.A. No helmet, plenty of lane splitting. Ahhh the 80's...

lane splitting in ca is not a free-for-all like most people think, there are a few rules you have to follow

according to the dmv handbook, you cant be going over 10 mph faster than traffic and cannot exceed 45 mph. dmv also states that if you have an accident while lane splitting, you will most likely be held at fault for the accident

So, in all seriousness, what has to be done in order to make this happen in Colorado? Can we get a petition going, AMA style?

I fully support lane-splitting, and wearing a helmet. I never ride without one, seen too many crushed skulls not to. As much as I like freedom of choice, I would support a helmet law in conjunction with lane-splitting.

To get it put as a law you would have to get a member of the General Assembly to sponsor the bill. Finding one that rides and wants the law as well helps. You would need a petition of at least 5,000 registered voters before anyone would listen to it. And really the petition would need more because many people that sign the petitions are not actually registered voters or are not registered in CO. Once all the paperwork is completed and a member has sponsored it, its a waiting game. Wait until the leglislators look at the proposed bill and vote on it. It takes time but it is possible. I looked into this when I moved from Cali to Colo a couple years ago. It is a lot of work but it can be done.

With the way the people drive in CO I would put them on my bike. So when that A-hole trys something you can customize their paint. :) jk.. kinda... Its a good idea to get rid of anything that extends the bikes width. Many times I have been close enough to cars on both sides that if I had something like this I would have clipped both cars.
