Just before the server crashed I had started a thread on the little project I was doing. I finished it last week. Here are some pics I took, hope you like it:

So pretty much I'll just recap the suggestions people gave me in the other thread. To repair the plastic I soldered, remelting the cracks back together and strengthened it using additional abs plastic (which I sliced into strips). Super gluing and Jbweld or fiber glassing the inside also helps provide it with additional strength. Also, before I began working with the bike plastic I made the rear seat cowling from abs plastic so I could have a test piece before I began painting. Which turned out to be a good idea cause the first time I painted, it was horrible. After that I just did a lot of sanding, then painted it. Overall it came out good and strong.

Nice! Your garage looks like mine...a place where bikes get worked on all the time, so there's no need to put the tools away

Nice looking bike!

Had it been recently crashed? Cause I can't believe the turn signal stayed on! Ususally, that's the first thing to go in a crash.

Thanks guys!

Yeah I went down a little over a month ago near Bishop's Castle. Those stock lights are pretty tough. They flex back, so I'm assuming that's why it stayed on. But the orange cap did come off. I had to pick that up from the ground. The light bulb shattered. Since I didn't like the look of the stock lights anyway, I just bought some of those more modern day looking turn signals.

Well... it is an old bike with old plastic so I just used rattle cans :bday:. Krylon Fusion to be exact. Plus I wouldn't be surprised if it went down again, hopefully while I'm just messing around on the track. Since I had no experience painting I tested it out on the rear cowling. The first time it didn't come out so good, adjusted my technique and started getting a hang of it. My main concern with spray paint was how it would hold up to gas spills. The first time I went to fill it up, being over protective, I used my hand to cover the nozzle, which resulted in gas spraying everywhere haha. Well luckily and surprisingly the paint held up, no marks etc. But I’m not going to take any chances so I ordered a large Yamaha logo decal which I’ll use to protect the tank. I’ve heard other people who used spray paint haven’t had the same luck as I have with gas spills. I pretty confident that has to do with the clear coat I used, which was the Krylon Fusion Clear. Addition to protection, It gives a decent deep gloss.

I used this as a guideline http://www.motorcyclepartsx.com/cheap-motorcycle-painting.htm.

Here are more pics I took as it progressed.

Just after painting, before I touched it up. You can still see where the paint somehow went under the tape on the left stripe. To touch up, I taped the blue, and used a thin brush to paint over the over spray.

yeah, not to mentioned the garage is only half painted too. I don't think the neigbours appreciate my art work. I have to close my garage when they drive by.

I was also worried about gas spills when I painted my gixxer, which is why I opted for single stage with hardener, but that also create a bit more work.

looks greak though man...I dig the stripes

Yeah, I actually did a search and read your post before I started. I would have done the same, but like you said... more work. I did get a lot of info off it though, so thanks. Yours looks awesome too, it nearly made me change my plan on the design. But I wanted to stay with 2 colors, keep the price as low as possible. What kind of condition is it in these days? If I recall the date on the post correctly, you painted it quite awhile ago.

Its not bad considering its a track bike. I didn't clear it, so the white rattle can paint has gotten stained, and the green rattle can is chipped off pretty bad on the lower, behind the front tire. The orange is holding up great save for a few rock chips, mostly from dragging it around on an open trailer.

Next time it is going to be 1 or 2 colors of paint at most, with the rest done in vinyl, especially for a track bike
