Thanks MG!

I did combine shots, since (in my opinion) it's a little easier to work that way. But photographers debate this issue to death (stacking vs. single long exposure). One downside to stacking shorter duration exposures is that you don't get to use as small of an aperture as you would with longer exposures (which is a huge help when dealing with the difficulties of nighttime focus). But there are far more options available in post when creating a stack of numerous images.

This specific photo was generated with 65 stacked exposures: 30s each, on a 3 second interval. So basically the equivalent of a 36 minute exposure. This actually has no post editing done to it yet - it was just my first pass to see how it looked after downloading the RAW files off my card. I am planning on going back to pull out the airplane lights, and maybe boost the colors/saturation a bit. We'll see.

Actually, it's incredibly easy to do with a digital camera... just hook up an intervalometer, set your imaging parameters (shutter speed, ISO, etc.), point your camera at an area of the sky you want to capture, start the captures, and get yer ass back in the car with a warm cup of cocoa!!!! If you let it run long enough to take a couple hundred photos, you're bound to score some good ones!

Thermal noise? Do you mean luminance noise?

Luminance noise is more related to ISO than exposure length - although they work together. Also, noise isn't specific to digital cameras; high ISO films suffer the same problem, although then it was referred to as "grain".

But yes - high ISOs can result in noticeable, and sometimes problematic, noise. This is a function of how the camera amplifies light on the sensor at high ISOs, which is dependent upon its firmware (which are propriety and closely guarded secrets of each manufacturer). A lot of the newer cameras can handle very high ISOs without a lot of noise (see Canon 5D MarkII, Nikon D7000, etc.).

High ISOs result in short shutter speeds, even with night photography. So if you crank a Canon 5DmkII up to an expanded ISO of 25,600, you will likely have a very short shutter speed, resulting in a lot of noise. While modern software can almost eliminate noise (see Lightroom v.3), there are tricks to avoid it. By setting a lower ISO and a longer shutter speed, the sensor is exposed for a longer duration to the available light (instead of having to amplify it). This results in reduced noise.

So lower ISOs with longer exposure times actually improve noise performance. The downside to this is, you will deal with star movement. So if you are trying to capture stars in a fixed position - which typically requires an exposure of LESS than 30 seconds - you will need a pretty high ISO, and a damn good camera (see the Nikon and Canon models noted above).

Guess I've got some experimenting to do.

This is the article I was referring to:
" If all you have is a digital camera, then give it a try. Otherwise, use a film-based camera instead. The reason for this is that digital cameras suffer from thermal noise during exposures of more than a second or so. That's why CCD cameras designed for astrophotography have built in Peltier coolers"

You do realize that was written in 2001, right? Digital cameras have come a long way since then. And them suggesting using a film camera should tell you something right there.

MotherGoose is right... that article is very old (with respect to digital camera evolution). Also consider that no high end digital cameras even use CCD anymore these days- they are all CMOS sensors. That may be why I don't even know what he means by "thermal noise"; it is likely an artifact limited to old CCD technology. I think the small point-and-shoots still use CCD sensors, but you won't find them in any pro-level or pro/enthusiast camera these days. CMOS pwns.

Noise control has come a VERY long way since 2001.

Thanks! I'm psyched about it... after months of procrastination. :)

I felt like I was becoming too dependent on "available light", and not experimenting enough with other avenues of creativity. This was laziness due to my comfort level with natural light shots; I just didn't want to learn something new. So I really had to force myself to acquire studio gear. It's making me learn how to use strobes properly - which is another step in the learning process I'm excited about entering into (after my initial hesitation)!

Funny- a lot of people are asking me how I shot that one. I've gotten inquiries from hanging upside down, to using high powered fans...

I actually had her kneeling down on the floor. She would then lean forward (with her head almost on her knees), and then quickly sit up and whip her head up/back while pushing her hair back with her hands at the same time. In that stop motion shot, her hands had just come out of her hair. It was actually quite a bit of movement.

Believe it or not that shot was only at 1/200th (inside the flash sync of 1/250th). I'm amazed myself there isn't any blur. Even at 100% zoom, everything is sharp as a tack.

Went up to Longmont last weekend to tell Ricky Orlando good luck on his record breaking laps @ Daytona next weekend. Decided to stop by one of the sugar mills to take some pictures. I didn't get to go in and explore, because I didn't have the proper attire, plus I had Kristin and Gia in the car. So these are all from outside the fence.

Keep your wits about you when exploring that place... cameras all over it, including some infrared jobbers. Considering a copper thief got nailed there 10 days ago, consider yourself lucky for having no run-ins with Johnny Law. That place is on the radar...

"after he reportedly admitted to breaking into the abandoned sugar mill to take copper to recycle for money. Deputies also arrested him on suspicion of theft from a business on Sugar Mill Road.

The business owner reported the theft of a reciprocating saw and welding cables and told deputies he suspected that either a transient or former employee took the items.

Boulder County sheriff’s deputies walked to NAMEREMOVED nearby encampment — which a sheriff’s report describes as a two-room bunker partially dug into the ground north of BLANKED — to talk with him.

According to sheriff’s reports, NAMEREMOVED told the deputies he would go into the sugar mill to take copper wire, then sell it to a recycling business in Longmont. Deputies recovered a receipt from a recycling business showing that he sold 82 pounds of yellow brass and 7 pounds of copper for a total of $175.63."

With the recent incident at Gates, and this numnuts up at the Sugar Mill, a lot of these abandoned properties are being closely monitored.

Just an FYI - and to remember to use your head when urban exploring.

Agreed! The lightpainting turned out sick!!

Just a tip... try it with multiple exposures (20, 30, or even more), and painting different areas at a time. Then you can import into P/S as layers, and apply masks to expose areas with greater detail in post. It also allows for added control of the background (totally black it out), while avoiding any "ghosting" that occurs whilst painting!

This shot is out of camera aside from some skin blemish touchups...

A speedlight gelled to all get out was down in the tunnel. By "all get out" I mean that I had to use a few sheets to get the color as deep as I wanted it to be. The backlight was another speedlight, gridded and stand mounted about 7' high - aimed down. The front fill is just reflection of the backlight off a concrete wall in front of the model.

I had a third speedlight setup as a main key with a shoot-thru umbrella (located just at camera left), but disabled it for this shot to get the low-key effect.

wow. quite a setup.... what sort of energy source did you use? I mean... are your lights portable or you had to jump through some gimmicks to make this much light work outside...

also... what's the location? I had been searching for an interesting background for a group shoot series I had been planning for this summer.

wow. quite a setup.... what sort of energy source did you use? I mean... are your lights portable or you had to jump through some gimmicks to make this much light work outside...

also... what's the location?

Most speedlights, such as the Canon 580EXII (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Speedlite-580EX-Digital-Cameras/dp/B000NP3DJW) and the Vivitar 285HV (http://www.amazon.com/Vivitar-285HV-Auto-Professional-Flash/dp/B00004TVSP/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1309317687&sr=1-1), are battery operated (AA) with longer lasting external power pack accessory options available. Speedlights are an alternative to monolights (http://www.paulcbuff.com/b1600.php). Monolights (typically) require AC power and are most often used for indoor studio work. However, a lot of higher-end monolights have optional power packs for outdoor use (http://www.istockphoto.com/article_view.php?ID=1033).

The advantage to monolights over speedlights, is that they typically have much higher power outputs, and far shorter recycling times (when provided adequate power). The higher power output provides greater flexibility with lighting options, especially outdoors when competing with the sun. The shorter recycling times help the photographer avoid missing that one great shot while also keeping exposures consistent shot-to-shot. On the down side, monolights suck for making a light, compact, and portable lighting rig.

For example, this setup is not something you're going to fit into one bag with your camera and lenses...

http://www.istockphoto.com/generic_image_view/153038/153038

When starting out with off-camera lighting, I strongly recommend working with speedlights. I started with monolights, and in my experience they were a little overwhelming and provided limited opportunities for use due to the confined indoor space I have available to shoot in. Additionally, manually controlled (no ETTL) speedlights can be had for $70-$90 each, compared to hundreds of dollars for a good monolight.

To learn more about speedlight usage check out Strobist.com (http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/) and their Lighting 101 tutorial (http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101.html). You can spend hours on that site learning techniques and getting ideas. And if you need any help - just rock out their forum here (http://www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/discuss/). There are a ton of friendly, dedicated strobists on there who can help answer almost any question you might have.

-

In my shot posted earlier I used only speedlights. The location had no option for AC power, and the covert nature of the shoot did not allow for bulky equipment being lugged around. Everything had to be carried in by hand in a single trip while avoiding detection. The shoot occurred at 1am in a mostly underground location, so I had 100% control over my light. I'm not really comfortable posting the location on a public forum, for a variety of reasons. But if you want to drop me a PM, I'd be happy to show it to you some time if you're in an adventurous mood, and don't mind getting a little wet and dirty. spend many hours there reading and reading before getting my lighting setup as well. Tons, if not too much, information to be had on lighting.

One other thing I wanted to mention, deadline, and that is terminology. The terminology in the strobist world is attrocious, mainly because everyone uses different words, and a lot of the words now have different meanings from their original definition. When starting out, it can be confusing as heck.

Here are the basics:

Speedlight: This is the Nikon brand for a flashgun with a hotshoe mounting adapter. However, this is now the "Kleenex" of the flash world, and pretty much describes any battery powered flash with a hotshoe mount, such as the Canon 580EXII. The word "speedlite" (notice the spelling) is also used by Nikon's competitors to avoid trademark issues. (speedlight wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedlight))

Flashgun: Generic term for any flash with a hotshoe mount. Same as speedlight.

Monolight: Studio flash designed around a constant power source (such as AC). (monolight wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monolight))

Strobe: Completely generic term used to describe almost any kind of flash. On its own, "strobe" usually refers to speedlights, although "studio-strobe" will refer to a monolight. However, it depends entirely on the context. Someone could say "strobe" in a studio when referring to their monolights - but the next day when shooting out in the field they'll be referring to speedlights. Due to this ambiguity I'm not a big fan of the word "strobe", since it can lead to a lot of confusion.

Hope this helps!

Thanks!

dof = depth of field. Yep, looked it up.

I had taken photography classes while in college = about 25 years ago, so tech jargon is lost on me (unless I look it up ;)), but I do understand and seem to remember why some pictures mean more to me than others. The way they are framed, or the contrast stands out, or the subject matter is the focus of the photo, etc. And, I had aspirations of becoming a photojournalist as I was working in video production at the time, too. A really dumb decision on my part kept me from taking that path when I graduated, but I still have this desire to be creative. It's good to know that my eye hasn't changed.

Yeah, the extra reach is always a nice bonus. What range telezoom did you rent (or was it a prime)? I rented a 1.4x teleconverter for the weekend. Combined with a 70-200mm f/2.8 and the 1.6x crop, I had an effective range of 150-450... sicksauce. 8)

I'm thinking about renting a 400mm or 500mm to take out there one of these days. Just for sh*ts and giggles. It's amazing how even a 200mm with a 1.4x extender and a 1.6x crop factor can seem like it's "not enough" reach sometimes.

I'm just wondering how many megapixels they can cram onto a sensor before image quality suffers.

This is argued back and forth all over the photo boards these days, and I recently switched from the "more MPs is bad" to the "more MPs is good" camp. Mainly because it seems the technology progression is not limited to the sensor. As sensors get ever higher and higher pixel densities, the processing continues to improve (DIGIC on Canon cameras) almost linearly.

So, yes, while increased pixels can cause more noise, especially at higher ISOs, the added detail provided at "normal" ISOs is well worth it. Besides, even the noise at the higher ISOs is far and away better than those on cameras from even two or three years ago - which had far lower pixel densities.

As long as the processing keeps up with the pixel pack... I'm OK with it.

One of the reasons I keep my old D50 around. In addition to being able to use older AF lenses the sensor does great at high ISOs and gives sharp crisp prints as long as you don't go above 18"x20".

+1 ... and sensor size.

Crop factors are for the suck when it comes to printing enlargements. It's for this very reason that Canon's pro-line cameras (1Ds & 5D) are full-frame. The level of detail those things crank out is nothing short of insane.

I'm looking to pick up a D90 next week, or if a D300 if I can find a good price. I've got some money saved in the business account, so I want to find something good, so I don't feel like I need to rent a body everytime someone asks me to do a shoot. They takes away from the profit, big time.

For you 'tog nerds out there - join up on Colby Brown's Official Google Denver Photo Walk SUNDAY OCTOBER 23rd!!

http://www.colbybrownphotography.com/blog/official-google-denver-photo-walk/

The real kicker... PhaseOne will have their local rep. there showing off their 80MP medium format camera. If you bring along a spare CF card, you can fight for a shot at testing it out - and taking that 80MP goodness with you back home!

It's what I usually rent for weddings, and it'll be good for the MRA stuff too. :D

Nice view! Where are you this time?

Really REALLY wanted to... I signed up the day it was announced, but just booked a family photo shoot fur Sunday afternoon. And right now for me - payment trumps passion. Gotta take the paying gigs.

But if you guys go, PLEASE tell me how that 80MP PhaseOne is. I'm bummed I won't be able to try it. Also, my buddy from Fritts Photo will be out there... he just grabbed an old school large format Hasselblad (film version!), and is using this as an excuse to try it out.

Should be a damn fun photo walk!!! (I'm jealous).

Yups. Looks like the last good weekend for a while with the bad weather rolling in on Monday. People are hustling to cram in the outdoor photo opportunities while the colors are still on the trees and before the coldness hits.

Ah well.

So I hope someone could help me out on here. I am going to be doing a photo shoot for Snowboard Colorado for my company, and would love to get a picture with downtown and the mountains in the same picture. Does anybody know of where at in Denver this can be achieved? Thanks in advance and by the way all your pictures on here are amazing

are you wanting action snowboard shots and downtown at the same time? You may have to wait untill some serious snow dumps and do a stairgap or something, that would be pretty rad.

Not for the first one, just looking for a spot that shows both downtown and the mountains. Some people said City park golf course but I don't know how they would feel setting up a photo shoot on there course haha. The shot your talking about would look awesome and I'll try and set that up later. I am doing 6 months worth of ads so changing them up every month would be pretty sweet.

City Park, just behind the Nature & Science building. REALLY good shot of it from their deck, but I don't think they'd allow a photoshoot there.
