...You have more riding gear than cubicle space.
...It takes longer to gear-up and gear-down than it takes to ride to work.
...You hold your breath at Red lights so your visor doesn't fog up.
...You've ever thought that a Ural might be worthwhile.
...You've ever left the snow on the seat: because with all the layers you're wearing... it just didn't matter.

- If you own a leather jacket that's a size or two too big, but fits perfectly with the right layers under it...
- If you've ever ridden with your visor half up so you can see through the snow
- If you hang off the bike more between November and March than you do between May & August because you really know the true meaning of "cold tires."
- If the phrase "black ice" immediately makes you shudder and think of riding
- If you've ever farted at highway speeds just to keep warm

Pulled over to "de-ice"
Are the only rider on the road in your county/state/country
Wear cramp-ons so you don't fall over at lights
Rack up up more miles from November thru April than most riders do the entire year.
Have pulled a truck out of a snowbank, on your KLR.

... You've had to stop the bike by digging your heels into the snow/ice covered road.
... You've blared your horn rolling through an intersection because you couldn't stop.... and those who were stopped flashed their lights at you, honked back, and threw thumbs out into the frigid air.
... 4 inches of clear asphalt is all you need.

I dunno if it's the season or the fact that I'm riding the Hurricane a lot recently, but I just wanna be a complete dick on the road nowadays. Snow or not. I'm almost to the point of riding that fugger like a sumo. One of these days I'll pull my first wheelie on it (yut uh)...and the probably pop the suspension. Unfortunately, I dressed for SNOW, and not the rain/snow that we got, so I did end up with a few wet spots. But I was still toasty warm.

Instead of building a sidecar from scratch, I was pondering the idea of putting a 4-wheeler's swing-arm on my bike to make a trike for the BAD days.

It won't look any goofier than some of those VW trikes that are running around.
Plus... maybe I can start a 3-wheeled supermoto class: with only one entrant, I'm SURE to get a trophy!

Anyone have a Suzuki LTZ400 laying around that I can take some measurements from?

I say you build outriggers that attach where the footpegs connect and have a small shock that connects to the frame. That way of you loose traction, you'll just slide a bit without falling over. . .

I'm in a similar boat. I'm only about 9 minutes away from the office, but that includes 2 exits on 470 so i've gotta debate if I wanna spend more time putting on & taking off gear than it will take to get to work, or if I wanna be completely numb from the waist down for the first 20 minutes of my workday

The rally studs like the ones on the Duc would absolutely terrify me on pavement. The studs that I used for Ralph's VStrom are a lot less aggressive, and according to him, don't handle badly on the street. That being said, they are noticeable, you're not gonna drag a knee on dry pavement, but they don't skate all over if you lean a little, and the ice traction is pretty good.

Yeah, I got the idea off ADV, but it took some time to find the right buckle.
Took about 4 hours to make at about $100 in materials.
It takes about 30 seconds each to put on (12 per wheel equaled 12 min).
Went to Walmart this morning to get some necessities and passed a Subaru.

I beg to differ sir... Although I do agree that slush sucks and is the most dangerous stuff to ride in, at some point cold just gets too damn cold.... I did -15 this last winter and although the snow was nice and crisp, and was a lot of fun on the knobbies, my everything got cold during the 30 min ride into work. I also broke the plastic map pocket on my tank bag by simply lifting it off the bike. Not cool.

It all depends on how prepared you are. I've ridden down to 3 per my thermometer on the bike. But I have Gerbings electric jacket and gloves. I have heated grips on the 'busa as well but the 3 degree ride was on the Harley so not even a fairing to block the wind.

The only real problem was with the fogging up. Down to 15 degrees or so, the Fog City works pretty well. Below that though, the fog freezes on contact so you have to breath shallowly. I have the Froggy Mask which makes a big difference in the lower temps.

Staying warm makes all the difference in the world. I have been 70 MPH at -19 (Helluva windchill) and with the proper gear you can do it. Sure, it will not feel like a nice fall/spring ride, but sack up and go.

If you are not having fun it is not workth the ride.

Swift
Thu Sep 15th, 2011, 10:38 AM
As long as you aren't riding through snow you should be ok. lol

The more gear you wear, the warmer you'll be. Insulated liners are the best to keep the heat in, an underarmor head sock is good for your helmet, ski socks work well, also look for wind proof shells. Lowering your tire pressure about 2-3psi vs what you use for highway during the summer will also help against the lower temps to keep you sticking to the road in a corner.

Oh, summer gloves are not good for lower temps. If you can, wear snowboard gloves or even rain proof gloves (IE: Gortex). Cold hands will kick your ass while riding.

I have given it alot of thought and i think i want to try and get into winter riding. What is the big asvice? and should i get another bike? i have a ducati 916.

Wheezy, I rode every single winter month this last year and had no problems. The key is simply having the right gear and tires you trust. I rode down to 30 degrees regularly. If it got colder than that I didn't feel like riding anyway. For me, the best new gear I bought for the cold weather was a Scorpion XDR Commander jacket and Held Freezer gloves. Those two items kept my neck, upper body, and hands warm. I of course did some extra layering when necessary. I should be even better this winter because I bought a pair of KTM Adventure pants which are more windproof and have two liners just like the Scorpion jacket.

Cycle World has a little write-up on a new set of boots that Harley just came out with called Sirocco Boots that have battery-powered heaters in the front part of the boot that have 3 settings from 113 to 140 degrees. They're not cheap but man that sounds nice. See p. 62 of the Oct 2011 Cycle World.

As far as the bike, I have a similar bike to your Duc (MV F4) but I was using my old VFR800. This year I'll be using my new VFR1200 and I'm sure it will do just as well if not better. Your Duc would do fine, but I just didn't feel like taking the MV out in that weather. Just make sure you have tires you trust in cold weather. Michelin Road 2s were great and I never had a scary moment. I have Road 3s on the new bike and I'm sure they'll be just as good if not better.

Keep in mind that the roads are much dirtier in the winter. I would do Deckers runs just staying in the car tracks. Sounds crazy but it worked just fine and helped my skills on sandy roads in the summer time too. You get to the point where your brain no longer scares easy when you see a little sand in your path.

I hope some of that helps. If you're warm, it's really no different from summer riding except you have less "line choice" in the lane if things are a little sloppy.

Gear, gear gear! I usually ride during the winter too. Although, not in the snow and ice. For me, the biggest thing is blocking the wind. That's what makes me cold. Here's my list

Closeout Fieldsheer jacket w/liner @ bikebandit $70 (heavy duty outer shell)
Snowboarding/snowmobile gloves $20
heated grips $30
balacava to block the wind from my neck $15
rain pants $10 (I wear long johns under my khaki's to work with the rain pants to block the wind). Although this year I'll probably wear my Klim Dakar pants because they are super awesome.

Biggest thing, watch the weather if you don't want to get stuck in snow. I've learned that lesson the hard way! And take it easy in the corners, it's harder for your tires to heat up.

I rode into Boulder @ 6:30am and it wasn't very cold. I was kind of surprised. For some reason the first week in October is when I start to feel the chill.

I washed the hundreds of bugs off the bike and put her into her storage spot for the winter.

There's a feeling I get
When I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving

In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees
and the voices of those that stand looking

I'm losing it.I think everybody just views it differently. For some people, motorcycling is a hobby. For others, it's a hobby that they are passionate about. And for some of us, it's a lifestyle. All levels of enjoyment with motorcycles are completely valid, at least to me. As long as it's above 30 and there is no ice or snow, I'll be on my 950, that's just the way I'm programmed.

Some bikes are also better suited to being all-year bikes than others.

So, you can claim it's passion, but it's not, many of us are very passionate, and we've been caught in snow/sleet/rain/hail, but it's not exactly fun to do on the bikes we have.

If I had a KTM, I'd be more inclined to ride all year round than I am on my CBR with 5% tread void super-sport/trackday tires...

Some bikes are also better suited to being all-year bikes than others.I have to disagree with you on this one. I was the same way when I had my R6 and CBR1k. I always rode my R6 year round. I took my poor old R6 (RIP) on more dirt roads than most people take their dual sports. Some sport bikes are actually nicer for cold weather commuting than my 950Adv is, there are more fairings to hide behind and the wind flows over the top of you.

And if you read it again, I'm saying that there are a lot of very passionate riders, but the people that never put their bikes away for winter, make riding a lifestyle, not a seasonal sport. Between passion and lifestyle, one is not better than the other, they're just different. You're spinning my comments to be negative, when that was not their original intention.

Then that's my bad, but it sounded like (or I read it as) lifestyle was "superior" to those who have a passion but "dabble" in riding as opposed to riding year-round.

I rode my F4 year round, but it was a paid-off POS worth about $1, my CBR is too precious to me (when it works) to risk in winter driving, (until it's paid off--then it'll be just like my F4).

I'd rather have your CBR for winter riding than my 919. If you put some nice Sport Touring tires on like Micheline PR2s or PR3s I think you might find riding year round quite enjoyable. Not sure why any one (unless you live in the mountains) would put their bike up for the winter in CO. You can ride year round along the front range.

+1 - I love the lower temps so I can wear some cool (but very warm) gear...

you're a winter rider if:
- you get excited at a 20 degree drop because of the extra performance the bike has in the thicker air. This MIGHT only apply to smaller displacement motos.... :D

It was hard to sit down, or traverse stairs, or just walk. I hit the ground three times on the way to work in the morning, the last one really hurt my legs (knee cap). I had to walk the WR across some intersections and up hills because it was so slippery. But I made it there, then I made it back.

The funny thing is, I took a video of it all but deleted it when I got home because it was kind of sad, seeing the bike go down like that over and over again :(.

I am willing to go up against new snow (crazy me), but I won't do it again with the current BT-090 supermoto tires.

Still kind of bummed about getting defeated by snow on pavement, even if it was heavy. Oh well, next time I'll win... even if it is just snow :).

Is it because they're tall with not much weight on the tires and there's a bit more pitching? I rode my beginner track bike (CBR 954RR) across snowy and icy roads back in the northeast, and I could get away with slides even at slow speeds. The WR just kept going one way, or the other (wouldn't catch after getting it back upright).

Haven't really learned very well how to change motorcycle tires yet. Maybe Shinko 244s and some chisel-tip studs? :)

Yep, mostly the front is the problem. You will find them to have the same issues on slick mud, where a set of knobbies will grip fairly well. But ice is ice and nothing short of studded tires works well with that light of bike.

The R1 presents a few challenges in finding suitable tires(adequate tread depth to stud), but it can be done if you're creative enough...:devil1:

Any DS tires with adequate tread depth work for studs. I have done a number of sets of Conti TKC80s, Pirelli MT60s, and a couple of sets of Avon Distanzias. The Shinkos should work pretty well, and have the advantage of being dirt cheap, assuming they have a front that will fit on your WR. The new Kenda Big Block looks like it might work as well, but they don't have a suitable front yet. If you source a set of off road rims (21/18-), then you can get into a whole different world of DS traction options.
