I want to buy an AR but dont really know anything about them, there are so many brands that make one. Can anyone here shed some light of these rifles? or point me in a website directions I can read up on them?

I’m sure there is tons of info online. I’m either going with an AR or Mini 14.

Depends on what/which one you're after. If you're just looking for a basic no frills type AR, then Bushmaster, Armalite and DPMS offer great weapons. Albeit those companies also manufacture souped up models as well. But I snagged my Bushmaster for right around $800 a few years back.

See when it comes to AR's you really don't need to buy a loaded model(you can but you'll pay a little more). All you need is a good foundation and then just start changing the upper's until you find one that you like. Which is the great thing about Bushmaster, DPMS, etc. They all for the most part interchange and you can try all sorts of combos.

I would say stop in at a local Sportsman's Warehouse to check prices, they usually have 3 or 4 different manufactures as well. I would have loved the Smith & Wesson M&P15 but didn't want to shell out the $1500, so I got the Bushmaster and now looking back, I'm glad I did. While I am a Smith guy at heart, to me buying the name wasn't worth it.

And in my opinion Bushmaster and DPMS rifles are the tits.

My DPMS SASS is getting some glass soon. :hump:

Watch the for sale forum on the co-ar15 site linked above, you can get great deals on there and none of the FFL hassle.

I bought my CMMG AR from CDNN... <-- how's that for acronyms?!

As long as they're milspec, you're going to find little difference between manufacturers. Find one you like at the price you're comfortable with and run with it. As previously mentioned, if it has something you don't like, change it... AR's are as farkable (if not, more) then sport bikes.

I agree. And customizing them is a large part of the fun with AR's.

My first was an LMT. It won't be my last. :)

some colts have different size pins and are not as interchangeable with the uppers.

Build your own, it's cheaper. As long as it's MIL spec, all the parts are interchangeable. You can buy a complete upper and complete lower and it would be a lot cheaper then buying a whole AR.

+1 on mil spec. Spend the time and build your own.

Get a decent upper and then build/customizer your own from a joint like Model1Sales.com (http://www.model1sales.com/).

Then you can do cool crap like this: http://www.justsomedude.com/photography/v8.jpg

Agreed. I built one to M-4 mil spec using a S&W M&P15 lower and lots of trick parts for around $800 a year ago.

This is from a gun-nut friend, & he's usually on target....

Everyone and their fucking dog is making ARs now. Olympic Arms is one of the less flashy, but original military contractors for building them. I bought an OLY, because I wanted quality and certain features with out paying an arm and a leg.

This is what I bought

This was my second choice and is probably their best screaming deal ever.

Good choice if you want the add ammo only option (as in optics not needed
