View Full Version : Mystery Missile off Cali

Always makes me feel safe when "mystery" and "missile" are used together in a news story. Add the "we have no idea" from the Pentagon and it's just fabulous.

Saber rattling by a Chinese boomer or just more general incompetence from DoD bureaucrats?

it was a mystery missile that belonged to no one. and norad/northcom is quoted as saying it was not a threat.

that means it was ours and the military does not comment on that stuff.

Don't buy it. If it was ours, and secret enough "not to comment on it" you don't launch the damn thing off the coast of LA, at rush hour.

My vote goes to some DoD Doofus hitting the wrong button and they are trying to come up with a plausible press release. If it was an unfriendly we have the listening devices and technology to know, especially within territorial waters. The last thing DoD would do would be :dunno:, they'd be first to proclaim "look how good we are, we know who it is"

If you can do something that gives you a definitive advantage, why would you shout it from rooftops and let everyone know?

The US intelligence community used to track Osama by his cell phone, then one of our wonderful senators came on the news and announced it to the world that we could do this. That was the last time Osama ever used a cell phone.

DoD, *not* D&D.

Though maybe I'll put an ICBM into my next game just for the fun of it.

It belongs to the Vatican. They are trying to keep the hispanyards from bogarting every single park in the state at 5:00 in the morning so they can put up punyatas, roast goatse's, and blast their music which sounds VERY much like they stole it from us Polish badasses.

You go Vatican.

because the fact that we have sonar nets around the US is not any kind of secret. it's been very widely publicized for years in the news and written about in many best selling novels. whales can be detected from hundreds of miles away. nothing anyone has except the US and Russia can get past the net and then it's lucky to do so.

This is an interesting and unique story for sure. Launching so close to a major population center as well as LAX and there was no "notice to mariners" or an aviation advisory. It may have been a mistake launch or something even more intriguing.

The fact that the pentagon is saying one thing and NORAD is saying another is interesting as well.

It may take some time for all of the facts to emerge on this one.

i trust NORAD/NorthCOM a hell of a lot more than i trust the Pentagon. NORAD/NorthCOM also encompasses DIA (defense intel, not the airport) and they for damn sure knows what it was and why it was launched, if anyone on US soil does.

it was military, that's a fact. no little terrorist organization can launch a missile anything like what is shown on that footage. and getting it here on a platform from which it can be launched is a whole other chore to be worked out. russia ain't stupid enough to get that close to us and launch an SSBM. i'm not sure anyone else could.

so i'm leaning toward the mistake in the missile room theory some have mentioned above.

I spent almost 15 years doing design for the Defense (Navy). I'll tell you this: It was a Top-Secret test by us. Period. The public doesn't have the "need to know", so they're not going to tell us. That couldn't have been a hostile. One, we have the best subs in the world, and they'd never get one like that past us. Two, if that WAS a hostile, you'd see IMMEDIATE very large scale deployment of our Naval forces from Long Beach, and also a trmendous amount of Air Force coverage of the area with sub-killer planes out in force.

The fact that the military isn't all up in arms about this is proof alone it was ours.

No need to panic, I saw this before from Vandenburg when I lived out at China Lake. They didn't advise anyone about the "UFO's" back in the '80s'.....which turned out to be the stealth bomber out in Palmdale at the LM I think it was.

yeah spelling isnt my strong point. but the cease the BS talk order i have is. Look this "boob" out at Vandenberg isnt in the loop. NONE of us are allowed to quote directly to the press without going through our PA office first. Thats what has actually happened .. somone says something they know nothing about... as per usual... and now we have this mess Making the rest of us in the missle field look bad. and we get briefed not to say anything...everytime we go out...We all work hard to keep our country safe and we all do a damn good job...24hrs a day all year... allot of us live at our sites for a week at a time....if you had any idea of the process involved you'd understand that no one could just accidentaly push a button...
hell i've probably said too much now!
Sorry, but neither of your posts make any sense. What "boob" are you referring to?

BTW, it's not made up anything, there's plenty of independent video footage of it, and I've seen launches at night from Vandenburg all the way up at China Lake, it's unmistakeable.

The only thing I agree with you on is it couldn't be a "mistake".

I think it was just a jet contrail. If you look at the video, it is right along the "scar" of the old contrail - you can see the shadow of the smoke from the jet before it. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Any substantial missile/rocket launch in the world, authorized and approved or not is detected, analyzed, verified and confirmed by the Air Force Space Command. There is no doubt whatsoever, that if there was an actual launch it was known.

DSP. Defense Support Program. Eyes in the sky. Essentially, every infrared signature of any vehicle/platform out there is identifiable. This information is out there for anyone who wants to know.

In a nutshell, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_Support_Program , http://www.af.mil/information/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=96 , http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/affacts/bldefensesupportprogramsatellites.htm , and although dated, still informative, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjivAUxhCzQ to name a few.

An example....During the Gulf War a Scud launch occurs from Iraq, satellites detect, IR signature is confirmed to what type of missile or platform it is. Range, direction, speed, payload and other factors are considered. Data is verified within Air Force Space Command and NORAD agencies. Alarms are sounded to likely impact areas in Saudi Arabia or Israel. Those folks take cover and throw on gas masks. This all happens within seconds.

That's what it looked like to me. A jet coming at the camera, not a missile going away from the camera.
