CIRES Professional Research Assistant

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) in Boulder, Colorado has an immediate opening for a professional research assistant. This position will be responsible for providing Linux/Unix/Windows support for the computing environment in support of scientific research within CIRES

Responsibilities

This includes managing and maintaining the Research Computing Environment, Host Based Security Systems with the Computing Facility plus anticipating any future software and hardware needs in support of the research function. This position will have experience with typical Linux software and hardware and be able to detect and deter security threats. Responsibilities will include installing, maintaining and upgrading network and computer software, supporting and updating the Operating Systems, and responding to user computer problems. This person will develop and implement computer procedures, documentation, and educate staff and research scientists in computer methodology. The candidate should be familiar with web-server administration (including HTML) plus basic system administration tools and utilities. The candidate must have and be willing to maintain currency in the field of information technology.

Requirements
Baccalaureate degree in computer, engineering or physical sciences
At least 2 years of experience in systems administration
Experience in Unix-based systems (including Solaris, Redhat, Centos)
Experience in configuring and securing Windows and Linux networks
Experience in working in a team environment
Experience in Intrusion Detection and mitigation
Skill in trouble-shooting and debugging systems
A demonstrated service orientation
After hours availability for unforeseen crisis mitigation

Desirable areas of experience include
Familiarity with PC, Macintosh and Unix/Linux software
Experience with LAN/WAN procedures
Skill in securing remote access to the network

The position will be filled as a professional research assistant in CIRES, University of Colorado at Boulder and will be eligible for employee benefits, including 22 days of vacation per year.
