Because other than improvements in technology, there's no need to change the original design. They got it right the first time, and decided not to fuck with it. :D

From what I understand the rear engine design is not really optimal for handling as compaired to it's mid engine competitors. The early 911's had a huge problem with oversteer. Over the years Porsche has tried all sorts of things to reduce the oversteer - from all wheel drive, to putting wider tires on the rear and narrower tires on the front. They've also done a bunch with the suspension to overcome this design flaw. There's no doubt that it is now a great handling car, but that is due to the best engineers in the world working on overcoming this design flaw. Also, as Jeremy Clarkson would say, "It looks like a souped up bettle". ;)
