im considering a tire change for the winter, mostly because some of my riding of late has been more off road iced up ruts and whatnot, and if I catch em just right i end up on my ass.... so i was contemplating putting my old dual sport tires on and outfitting them with some studs of some sort, my question for you hardcore mofo's is, how do they act on the street? will i be shooting myself in the foot by gaining an edge on the ice and losing some on the street?

They aren't evil on the street, but you will lose some traction. Plan ahead and don't expect to lean it to the pegs or stop as fast. My DL1000 is physically unable to stop within the parameters of the MSF braking test studded up, though it's close; a lighter bike could probably do it.
