Glenn at HPR is on the lookout for another day for us, but the truth is that weekend days at the track are VERY hard to come by. JJ has it right, I originally booked this day back in December and it was the ONLY available weekend day left at that time.

There is a hierarchy to the booking of events at HPR -

1) The clubs that built it get first priority (MRA, SCCA, MCCA, ETC)

2) Groups that wish to have WHOLE weekends are second on the list

3) Single day renters are third.

I'm in the last category and have tried both multi-day events and weekdays and they didn't go well financially. So, for now, this is what we have. Fantastic events once or twice a year.

I'm working on one more for this year. Believe me when I say you all will be the first to know if it's going to happen.

Thank you for the support, and the feedback.

It's too bad the weekday rentals don't work out since the schedule shows a ton of openings.

Guess it's too hard to get enough people to get time off and I suppose even the shops that're closed Mondays don't have enough track day enthusiasts to fill the gaps.

You probably need like 50 or more riders to commit to make it worthwhile and while you'd think that's a small number given all the riders in the frontrange I can see where many can't or won't take a day off to ride.

Bummer...

Weekday events have proven to have enthusiastic riders, just not enough of them. Sucks, but the man has to pay the bills and the expenses are pretty much locked in from the start. Hopefully a weekend day works out though.

The true answer to the question of what Oscar was doing is that he was showing the track official his Chicane sticker so he could go out on the track, but let's be honest for a second, does anyone ever really know WTF Oscar is up to? No need to answer, it's a rhetorical question.

Well, boys and girls, it's time for a new game. . .

I like to call this game - "Who owns this finger?"

Below is a series of cropped images of some of our nefarious guests offering a gesture that has been dubbed "the photographer's salute". Your goal is to see if you can determine the owner of each of the offensive fingers.

Lucky enough for the owners of the fingers, I do not work for in the law enforcement field, so there are no worries of someone showing up at your work to issue you a citation . . .

Offender 1 . . .
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff172/ghostrider_9/Misc/IMG_3787.jpg

Offender 2 (I will add that this rider is a repeat offender) . . .

So far we have managed to identify two out of three of the hooligans that ride around indiscriminately displaying highly offensive hand gestures without any regard to the sensitive nature of our esteemed photographer . . .

Offender 1 . . .
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff172/ghostrider_9/Misc/IMG_3787.jpg

Was correctly identified as JJ's "Darling Cat". I am surprised to have seen such a vulgar display from such a lovely woman . . .
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff172/ghostrider_9/Misc/IMG_3787-1.jpg

Offender 3 (I should expect nothing less from this rider) . . .
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff172/ghostrider_9/Misc/IMG_0864.jpg

Was correctly identified as Dave (aka OUTLAWD) by Sean, Jeff and Goose. This is the typical sort of behavior that I would have expected from such a miscreant . . .
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff172/ghostrider_9/Misc/IMG_0864-1.jpg

The question remains . . . who is the mysterious flinger of the finger?
Anyone care to hazard a guess? Maybe he give us a hint himself . . .

I think this is an affliction that is closely related to Tourette Syndrome. I believe that whenever the afflicted person sees the camera he/she has no control over themselves and it just happens.

I've heard that it affects people in different ways. It seems that some corner workers seem to have an uncontrollable urge to drop their pants . . . I have pictures to support this theory. Do you think I should post them?

Hey folks, just checking in from home. I'm the douchebag who broke rule #1.
Have a broken vertebrae in my neck but no nerve damage or anything concerning. Otherwise just a bunch of bumps and bruises. A few months in a neck brace and I'll be good as new!

Thanks to everyone involved, it was a great day until I biffed it. Major thanks to you Scott for calling my family and then calling again to make sure we were okay, and MAJOR props to the professional medical crew who did a great job hauling my broken ass off to the hospital.

Brian,

I'm really glad to hear that you're home and recovering.

I couldn't be more pleased with the quality of care that we get from Western Ambulance. They are world class professionals and the exact people I want taking care of me.

You have my number, please feel free to use it.

The last shot on your go pro is me looking at the camera (straight into the lens) and saying "huh, it's still running!" just before we shut it off. I'd love to see the rest of the video if you are able to recover it.

Heal quickly - I'll look forward to our next meeting.

Yeah, I only saw the bike, didn't look pretty...

It'll buff right out. Quick assessment: need new tank, new subframe, new plastics, new fairing struts, clip ons, lights, front wheel (repairable). Everything else "looked" straight. Frame's not even scratched.

Looking at the scratches I can "guess" Brian lowsided in T4 and then the bike flipped and landed upside down pretty hard.

The video ought to prove interesting.

Glad to hear that you are in good spirits. Take your time and heal up well. Having you post in this thread says more about the medical crew and how Scott runs things than anything else.

Best wishes on a full recovery! Just remember to take it easy.

If you do get a chance, I know I would love to hear more about what happened. If that GoPro captured it all, that would be amazing. Regardless, that is all secondary to the fact that you are a testament to the safety measures that have been put into place.

Now, what bike to buy next...?

Glad you're ok, happened while I stuck around with the CoS crew after I already broke rule #1 so don't feel bad. I was worried from the sound of it and the look of your bike. Great that you're still upbeat!

Semi-related, did anyone see what happened to the RC8?

I saw it go out, then I saw it come back on the trailer looking like it'd lowsided...

That's me. Luckily, I have good luck crashing. I didn't want anyone to notice. Just some bruises, kicked up coming up Danny's Lesson at the end of session 3. Please don't hate on me for crashing such a beautiful machine. But I didn't buy it to look at it. I hadn't ridden in over a year and I always try to push myself. It was a pretty intense ride. I could fix it in an hour if I had the parts, getting them is an issue due to availability. I want to get it ready for July 9th. Working with Bartman on that.

That's a shitload of bike, I would be scared to death to ride that monster, of course Diego's 636 (with high comp. pistons :) ) scared me when we swapped.

From the looks of it where I was, you just needed to be smoother on/off the throttle & brakes. I've ridden a stock one of those and they are pretty twitchy. Have fun on the 9th.

Fwiw I was working turn 3 and thought the same. I would also suggest taking it easy the first few laps, finding an grove that works for you then try to improve from there. At the begaining of evey session you were squirly but closer to the end you wuld settel down but on the last lap you would try to drasticly improve and then you were squirley again. When you were relaxed you kickin ass when you wern't you were off int the dirt next to me.

Brian, don't know you, but more than glad to hear you are recovering and will be okay!

How's the gopro? I think you should sell the vid and pix of the camera to gopro for their marketing and put it towards the bike fund.

And Scott's "huh, it's still running" will make it even better!
:headbang:

Hey, if anything, maybe they'll send you a new camera or some gear.

I have had a few late entries from people that did not get registered with us at HPR. If you did not get signed up for photos, please drop me an e-mail so that I get your name on your photos. If not, you will be tossed into the "whoami" bucket.

The info I need is: Name (preferably yours), bike, leathers, helmet and any distinguishing features (number plate, etc . . .). With the bike, leathers and helmet, the more descriptive you can be, the easier it is for me to figure out which rider you are.

I'm glad you're OK. I was working Turn 4 and watched the whole thing happen. It LOOKED like something broke off of your bike around the 3rd brake marker, causing a huge tankslapper. You sort of recovered from it, then it happened again just as fast before the bike lowsided into the dirt. It must have hit something in the outfield, because it flipped into the air and did a few somersaults before it stopped moving.

Glad to hear you are in fairly fair shape, the bike looked bad enough that there was quite a bit of concern about your condition. Scott said the GoPro was still running, did you get a chance to look at the video?

And I recommend a 250! :)

The GoPro was still recording when I found it. Should be quite telling... or at the least should help explain what happened.

That's pretty much what happened. :(

Interesting to hear about the tankslapper, my memory is very fuzzy but for some reason I always thought I had a tankslapper while braking for turn 4. Kinda weird, but while unconscious it was like I lived the previous few days as a dream, and in that dream I tankslapped going into 4 then everything stopped. Then I awoke on a gurney being loaded into the ambulance.

I cannot explain why that would have happened, maybe when I get in better shape I can look closer at the bike mechanically.

I have the vid from the GoPro, but I cannot bring myself to watch it at this point...maybe later.

Do you have a steering sabilizer? Did you make any adjustments to your bikes suspension and/or tires before going on the track?

VERY Glad you are ok.

All of the images are one of three sizes (depending on the which camera was used). The image sizes are either:

5184 X 3456
3456 X 2304
3008 X 2000

Don't let the sizes fool you, even the smallest can be blown up to poster size! Just for reference, the images that I posted up of Jason DiSalvo (like the one below) is only 640 x 427 (the smaller images are almost 5 times this size!):

Does anyone have any typical lap times for the intermmediate group? Unfortunately I didn't have a timer with me.

ian22
Wed Jul 6th, 2011, 12:52 PM
I think intermediate group times vary wildly...rider skill and bike capability differences. The fastest I can run so far is a 2:16 timed with my camera. I was riding with a group for a bit that was in the 2:18 ish range in the intermediate class. IMO anyone who is under 2 mins is way fast and probably "advanced". So maybe 2:05 - 2:40?

Zach929rr
Wed Jul 6th, 2011, 12:55 PM
Last time I was out there, I was running pretty consistent 2:10-2:14 (w/ a lap timer) on a front tire that wasn't holding air for shit. Tires were bt016s

FWIW, a few of the riders were asking me to move up to the advanced class and I wasn't being passed often.

It's really going to be usless data unless you had a laptimer. Times between riders could vary as much as 10 -15 (or more) seconds in that class I would think?

There is no set rule but I would think a good move point to advanced is probably when you can start turning sub - 2:08-2:06 range at a minimum? (best lap). There is always times when you get held up and have higher lap times though.

So maybe 2:05 - 2:40?

I would guess about the same. I was running ~2:12's in the morning, and decided to bump up to advanced in the afternoon, not sure how much quicker i got, but i felt alot better. I was passing a decent amount in Intermediate, and while I know there were guys running quicker than me, I got passed only once or twice, I decided I would rather get passed by a few guys every couple laps, than fighting with traffic in every turn. IMO in this case being consistent is more important than one blazing hot lap thats quick, you are going to want to hold your line as the faster "advanced" guys are blowing by you.

I would make it 2:10 or slower...

I am at 2:21-2:25 on the 250 get passed on the straights by almost everything, in the turns I catch and pass, I have the most fun there. I can battle back and forth with the same bikes for several laps.

Very true. That's one thing you want to be able to count on in any A group is being consistant and predictable. If I am passing, (or being passed) I want to be assured that the guy next to me knows what he is doing and can hold his line.

But with that said you don't want to be holding everyone up either.

I had a few pucker moments when I went to pass someone in the I group, and they suddenly moved "off line" after I had committeted to pass already

But with that said you don't want to be holding everyone up either.

hopefully I wasn't holding you up too much...

I knew you were back there, and kept waiting for you to take a look...until I caught that false neutral between 4-5

That's the main reason I hadn't moved up to that group yet, since I was on the threshold when me and my bike were 100%

No, you were fine Dave. I was just waiting for a good, clear moment to get by. It's only a track day not a race so no need to try a risky pass just to get by on a fun day. :)

My friend came to the track for the first time that day, and you are behind him for about 3 minutes. He was the goof on the Yamaha FJR1300. He's going to really enjoy seeing himself ride. Thanks for posting.

No problem. He was keeping a pretty good clip, and that bike really drives out of the corners. A couple of times I was trying to take a different line and get around, but you can see the results.

Not just related to this, but it's interesting to see the perspective difference between being there, and the wide angle of the GoPro camera.

Man, not sure when you went out but I thought you had the track entirely to yourself until around the 11-12min mark.

Decent lines but fwiw I would try most of your lower speed corners in a lower gear and try to keep the revs up a bit. Maintenance throttle rather than engine braking. ;)

Man, not sure when you went out but I thought you had the track entirely to yourself until around the 11-12min mark.

This was the second to last session I believe, so there was a lot less traffic. I also didn't go out with the pack, let them get most of the way around first.

Yea, that is one thing I need to work on. Just watching the video gives me a lot of insight on things I need to work on.
