How much have you guys paid to register in this fan-f$&%ing-tastic state for your bikes?

I spent just over $350 today. I was expecting around the $200 mark and instead, got shafted. BIG TIME. :x

Was it a purchase? I have never paid over about $200 for a new bike, BUT if it was a purchase then any sales tax not paid at the time of purchase is collected with the first registration

I think the 2001 XR650R is only $40, my 2001 FZ1 was only $40, the 2004 599 was about $40 too. 2005 Ford Focus is about $150 now...the 2010 Ford Edge was $680. Trailer is FREE now *wink wink* Got to love MI permanent trailer plates.

Yep, I hate this states wealth tax, but alas people were too dumb here to vote it down to $10 for any vehicle. i blame it on people that think CO has bad roads *shrug* They need to move East, especially MI and see bad roads. This is not AZ people we are not HOT all the time and WE do have a freeze thaw cycle that is hard of roads. You can charge $5K a vehicle and roads still be how they are.

I bought the bike private party. I guess it'll be cheaper next year but f$%# me in the heart running $350 for a $3250 purchase is ridiculous.

If you really think that the roads wouldn't be worse if that law had passed (which was so ridiculous that Democrats AND Republicans both shot it down), then there's a bigger problem. Road maintenance here is pricey, and we pay for it. Without that income for the state, it'd come from somewhere else. We have the lowest avg gas price of any other state, but we also pay out the ass for registration. But if that law had passed, our roads would never get fixed.

Here's how Adams County determines what you pay

First year I registered my bike it was only $180. But that was before the rates went up.

LOL, that's because you had to pay for SALES TAX. That's not all registration fees. 8% of $3250 is $260. The rest is title transfer fee ($25 or more), and registration fees. WHen you buy a vehicle private party, you pay sales tax to the county when you get plates. If you purchase form a dealership in CO, they will collect sales tax at the time of sale.

I live in Adams County Unincorporated... if the dealership or previous owner is not in Adams County, I pay 4.1%. Just bought a brand new car last week and only paid like $700 in taxes after my trade in.

I figured it was something like that. Still sucks.

Yeah, but you'd pay that amount in ANY state you buy a bike in... There is no state that does not collect sales tax for a vehicle purchase.

On a good note. Republicans trying to get rid of the late fee hike from Ritter. Hope they succeed.

This is why most people ask the seller to put down on the title that you paid less for it than you did.

Bingo. Most of the sellers put down that I bought it for $1000. or lower.

I usually try to do that too. I didn't think about it this time and I wish I had. Did it with my Trans Am back in the day. Lady looked at me funny when she saw $1. lol

I believe the first year of a private sale is quite a bit higher is due to the 'State adding the CO sales tax on the bike...

Ricky
Tue Feb 22nd, 2011, 04:19 PM
It's higher when you buy a vehicle because there are sales taxes and title transfer fees. You don't pay those the second year, regardless of the vehicle age.

When I bought my WR250, the guy left purchase price blank. I wrote in $1000, even though I paid double that.

It doesn't matter what you paid, or "paid" for a bike. The state and county will charge you based upon the taxable value. Look at your registrations and you'll see a "purchased price" section and an "original taxable value" section.

Yes. Sometimes you'll find a vehicle that was purchased for more than the taxable value, sometimes less. If you won a car at a casino, the state and county will charge you taxes on the taxable value. They're ruthless when it comes to getting theirs.

I learned that the hard way with the Buell... I bought it for the "Harley sucks" clearance price but paid taxes & registration on 12K. :x

The OWNERSHIP TAX, which you pay every year, is calculated based on taxable value (% of original MSRP), and vehicle age. SALES TAX is calculated based on the amount you SAY you paid for the vehicle (the amount on the title or bill of sale).

I bought a 2000 MT500 3 months ago just went in to get plates and title and was charged a late fee of $30 because the bill of sale and title was dated 3 months ago
it's $10 a month up to $100. Now that really sucks.

Quick question: My bike is sitting in Nevada in a garage right now. It's still got (expired) temp tags, but was in a state of non-operation and garaged, will I still get nailed with the late registration fee or does Colorado have a system similar to Nevada in which I can sign a waiver and show copies of my deployment orders or something to prove that I wasn't using it?

I've never known a state that wouldn't.

Doesn't matter if the registration is expired or not. If you have a title, and you get a VIN verification, they will register it. They don't need any info about your registration from the other state (I used to live in NV before moving to CO). I even had a parking ticket I received on my NV plates, and that disappeared.
