To be honest, racers are already on a budget, and probably won't be up for something like this. Best bet is to get out there on your own and get to taking pictures so people know what you do, and your work in this genre. I'm going to be sponsoring a couple racers this year, and I'd never ask them for something like this.

Photographers out there are asking $3-10 for digital photos, most racers will be MAYBE 5ish photos a year. So there isn't much money being spent on pictures. I realized this before I got into it, and am not looking to make a business out of it, I'm just out there trying to have some fun.

+1 on what Goose said. I started out just shooting for friends then it grew into shooting everybody and i quickly figured out it was not going to be a second income. I didn't do anything last year because of other issues, but before that I had noticed sales going down over the previous 2 years. Budgets are just getting a lot tighter.

Exactly. I'm lucky if I can sell enough to cover my gas and for for the weekend. Just remember that you're out there for fun, and not trying to make a bunch of money at it.

If you wanted, we could car pool out there and split gas.... if you don't mind riding in the back with a big fuzz ball. :D

hey man...if you want to eat PB&J all weekend and sleep in a tent...hit me up

but there are already 3-4 established photogs present at the races, so I'm not saying that you couldn't break into the market, but it is already quite saturated...

and the recent chicane days Scott has been working with Marc/Wicky, and I'm not sure if Glenn allows photogs on the track during lapping days (liability issue)

Good Luck to you man

Nope been asked already. Might have been on the MRA board.

Glenn wouldn't even let me out there on a lapping day, even with my past corner working experience, and he likes me..... most days.

OP- You might want to post up on the MRA website. I'm sure there are some new racers that would love to have a photographer at the price of food and transportation.

It's definitely a hard place to make a living, but if you prove you have the skills (like Wicky has done) than you will get people buying your photos. Once you have a race portfolio, you will get much farther with these types of requests. It's not easy, but if your good at what you do you can make a couple bucks and have fun doing it.

I would have to echo the thoughts that everyone has already said. If you are looking for a place to supplement your income, this is definitely not the place. If you are simply trying to work on your portfolio, then hitting up a couple of races is a great way to do it. I just wouldn't expect anything other than the images you get to improve your portfolio. You will find that those of us that do this sort of thing, do it because we enjoy it. We definitely don't cover the costs of shooting and the countless hours of PP work.

Most of the guys that are out there are good people and more than willing to help out. The opportunities are pretty limited for shooting. I would take advantage of any opportunity that you have to get out and shoot an event when you can. After all, practice makes perfect . . .

Nothing to add other than I shot most of last season and it was all out of pocket. There are already half a dozen photogs out there offering their services. If you're looking for a free ride you'll have a hard time finding racers who will subsidize your expenses; they are on a shoestring as it is. Try hitting up a publication or a dealership you're likely to find deeper pockets there.

Reality (and gravity) can be a cruel mistress.

You can ride out in the bed of my pickup but you would need to pit bitch for me.

Good luck with that. You will do better selling to a stock image company.

Not looking for any kind of income, just looking to have fun shooting guys at the track and get some more photos for my portfolio. I figured if some one wanted a few hundred photos of themselves for free, $30 in food and a ride wasn't too much to ask.

Judging from the responses here, apparently it was.

:)

Thanks for the honesty though guys -- it is appreciated.

They'd have to have a huge ego to want several hundred photos of themselves. :D

That's just my way of saying they'd get all pre-sort pics. Some people want 'em, some don't. Ya never know.

Sometimes it takes several hundreds to get a really really good one.

Post up on the MRA and keep this thread bumped up. I bet there are riders who would help. Some people roll to the track solo and would love company, especially in exchange for free pics. If I wasn't already sponsored by a photog, I would be interested. Not only that but my truck is always packed lol.

Good luck and if you want to make it happen, don't give up!

And yes, I was being kind of a smart-ass. Would you expect anything less?
