So starting to look around for a lighter dual sport for the girlie. Das beemer-pig is low enough but heavy. KLR 650's are right out. DRZ400 might work if they were lowered. Thinking a KLX or WR 2-fiddy with the appropriate mods. There was a nice KLR250 up at Beemers & More in FoCo that fit her back a while ago. Prolly something that can go up P2P, keep up with traffic and hit the fire roads .. nothing too gnarly.

What other choices? Maybe 'tarded out?

Here's a plated KTM 200 2 stroke. Not sure how it would do with traffic?

Can't see a KLR250 doing highways all that well. CRF230L is an option if you're looking at that power level though.

DR-Z's get lowered all the time, not necessarily the best option but it is done (ie, they make lowering links and everything.

:dunno: It can be pretty managable. Esp since it's a little older. I was just thinking: light weight, tops out in the mid 70 mph and plated. Being a 200, it shouldn't be that tall either. Plus, it's not to expensive and it's kind of sexy. It looks like it needs new shoes, but that's about it. Those things are pretty bomb proof.

Assuming the girlie is new...as much as i love 2 smokes...gonna still suggest staying with a 4 stroke...a little more forgiving

Here's a couple of ideas. Joining the DRZ(ish) club might not be the worst idea. Light weight (compared to the beemer), solid power and you can plate it easy. Plus, you can always get some sumo wheels and steal it from her on occassion.

The CRF230 is what I want to get the wife for her upgrade this year. She is kinda sick of the 2 stroke powerband.

Do not get a 2 stroke. Yamaha TT250, XR250L, DRZ400S

Ok, what's involved in changing from SuMo wheels and tires to knobbies, just swapping them out?

Bueller
Thu Mar 31st, 2011, 03:04 PM
Time, effort, PIA. Just get stockwheels and put good DS tires on it.

I was VERY happy with my XT225, I put 15k on one.
I was able to pass some sportbikes with it, and it was unstoppable in snow/water.

They are dirt cheap too, so that's a plus.

Changing a DRZ between dirt and sumo isn't THAT bad, but its easiest if you relocate the caliper for BOTH sets of wheels by getting a larger front disc for your dirt wheel. That's how Monica and my bikes are set up. I can race prep my bike (remove lights, luggage and swap wheels) in about an hour, so wheels are only about 40 min.

BUT... like Bueller said, just get a good set of DS tires because its just as much fun and it's WAY cheaper.

-----------------------------------------------
That's how both Monica's and mine are set up?

Both Monica and my bikes are set up like that?

None of those sound right; WTF is the correct way to state that?

Just FYI, after seeing a ton of brand new CRF230's run, they're kinda crappy motorcycles. An XT225 plated would be way better or a DR-Z.

Just trying to say if you go the 230 route, don't expect much at ALL. You can get them to run ok, just not Honda's best effort.

I had an NX250 for awhile. Great bike for small statue persons, enough juice to get around town and short hwy stints, but I dont even take my crf450 on the freeway for very long, and it has twice the power. My wife loved it cause she fit it and didn't have to kick start it, just push a button. I wouldn't get a two stroke due to the power caracturistics sp, to quick to spool up on the pipe. I also wouldn't get anything heavy, ala drz400. Most women won't be able to pick it up off it's side when dumped. And that is only a matter of time. The new wr250 lowered would be my choice if my wife wanted to get back into it, which thankfully will probably not occur. I have gone thru all of these scenario's so I know what will probable happen. you will get a bike for you SO, go out, have a bit of fun, then the pace will rise, crashing happens frequently, and the fun will be over. Women in gereral don't like getting beat up, by anything. Dirt riding does that. My wife got tired of nursing bruises and telling her co-workers she wasen't getting the smackdown at home from me.
There's my two bits.

My vote is for the WR250F. I've been nothing but happy with it, and mainly because it comes straight down from the YZ250. Plenty of power, even for me.

Maybe an older XT350? I have one, seat is lowish, can handle reasonable trail riding, cheap. I may be selling mine soon...

The only drawback: Kick only, although I have literally started mine in socks...

The crf230l is worth looking at.

I agree for sure but it is still a tall bike. The power is really not that bad for trails either.

Have you looked at any TTR 250's?

Could be. When you ride an XR650L, all bikes seem short. :) If I see a 230L at a decent price, I'll be tempted to get one.

I can see not lowering a bike with say a 33" seat height, taking into account suspension sag. Any of the bikes above that would need lowering links for her to touch down. A KLR250 is in the front running right now.
