So i took delivery of my 748 this morning, and had a question. I know Ducati dry clutch's are noisey, but when i fired it up and let it idle, it sounded like springs were clunking around in there, but when i took off in gear, it went away (sounded normal) Does the noise soften up after it warms up or something?

Gallep,

This is a totally normal noise for a duc to make, especially with the stock clutch. A barnett or EBC will run a little quieter, but the stocker isnt causing any damage.

The ducati motto is "loud clutches save lives"

Congrats on your purchase!

If it sounds like a spoon in a garbage disposal you are good to go.....

Sounds like a fork please take to dealer to fix.....

Sounds like a spork this is the early sign of clucth failure....

Thats some funny stuff, I'd like to hear some other clutchs though, just for shits and grins you know? Are there going to be any duca's @ Brecs this week? Or if one of you guys are near Land Rover Denver East anytime this week, stop by?

I don't live too far from there, if the weather is good I'll ride over to the dealership one afternoon this week. Probably thursday....that work?

750 sport has a wet clutch, so I wouldn't know; but My wifes ST2 does exactly what you're talking about. I try not to stay stopped too long on hers with the clutch out (in neutral). That sound drives me nuts!

HA, I love your spoon/ fork analogy…

OK man, first of all congratulations on your bike… Just remember it take some dedication and real love to own a Duc.. Its true they are expensive and under powered compared to a Jap bike, but then again it’s a real beautiful bike and no matter what year it is.. it will turn heads before any new Jap bike. ;)
Concerning the Clutch.. If it sounds like you have some marbles turning in your gear box.. you are good to go. Remember it’s a dry clutch and it will be loud, but once you squeeze the lever it should quiet down a little.. you will also hear the V-twin..
So if it sounds like a diesel truck.. you got a winner.. :D

If your in the springs.. your welcome to check mine out..

If the weather holds out maybe Dub & I can join you. The 749s has an open clutch, I'll just be along with my wet clutch...

OK i found this on Speedzilla (ducati forum)... I it was posted and it is so true... I could have not said it better myself...

The post asked "Hmmm what to choose Ducati 749s '05 or honda 600RR '05..?"

---The Reply below---

"The 600rr is a better bike (performance and value) than the 749s. I think the Ducati owner is different than a Japanese bike owner. It's not a matter of class, money or skill, just preference. I know several people that got a Ducati because it was a status symbol, and hated their decision.

I, on the other hand, have been lusting after Ducati since I saw the '93 900ss and the 916 when they first came out. I love the looks, the personality and to a lesser extent, the exclusivity. I don't want a cookie cutter bike, and want something with a style that speaks to me.

I also have no illusions about my riding ability and the performance of my 996 (or any Ducati for that matter). I consider myself an average rider, but I have tons of fun on my bike. I also don't think my bike is any 'better' than any other bike out there, and I'm certainly aware that it costs more than most and performs less than most. Simply put, I think all Ducati's offer a pretty poor price to performance ratio. Even if you are really rich, it'll take an incredible sum of money to make even an expensive Ducati perform as well as any modern Japanese sportbike that costs half as much (or less).

In my experience, Ducati owners who really love their bikes and don't mind the drawbacks never really considered getting anything but a Ducati. It's a choice of the heart, not of the head. Based on your post, I think you would be disappointed with the Ducati. Either you just know in your heart of hearts that you must have a Ducati or you don't.

Owning a Ducati is not like owning a Japanese bike (with the exception of some rare ultra sexy Japanese bikes, like the R7, RC30/45, ZX-7RR, etc...). We Ducati owners have to put up with a lot of crap to keep our underpowered and overpriced bikes in top shape...flakey rockers, bad voltage regulators, expensive and hard to find aftermarket parts, limited service shops/mechanics and the insatiable need for useless stuff like carbon fiber and magnesium.

Get the Ducati if it's your dream bike, because chances are you'll be less than pleased if you are comparing it to the 600rr."

Awesome! My bike currently has a Barnett clutch in it with the stock cover, so it's a little quieter than stock.

I'll give you a call thurs. afternoon!

If the clutch gets too tough to work over time, you can add a clutch slave and it makes a big diff... and saves your hand in traffic!

thanks, so i got my temp tag and insurance stuff today and just rode it to school. i got a question, when i got on the brakes pretty good, it felt like something was loose and hittin something. when i got off i couldnt find anything loose. any ideas? or maybe scott, (since you've got a 748)could you take it for a lil spin sometime and let me know if you feel anything out of the norm. And i found out that it did have the 6k service done to it.
