View Full Version : Firecracker 500

Tue Jun 14th, 2011, 08:31 PM
Yes folks, it that time of year again.
The umpteenth "official" Firecracker 500.
I have been doing this run for over
100 years now so it really is not new to me.
Drift coined this ride some years ago and it
kinda stuck.

Here's the drift, if you get my drift.
The route is 500 miles, completed in
one day, during daylight, on July 4th.
We meet somewhere and go for a ride.
The route is a large loop basicly to the Black Canyon
and back. If you have not been, you should, as
it offers some of the best that Colorado has.

This ride is not for the meek, timid, unsure, or just
plain slow. Sorry, thats the way it is. "The Pace" is used
for the entire ride.
You and your bike will be stressed for the entire day,
both will need to be in top shape.
Entry will be limited.
Meeting details will follow later.

There always have been some questions about this ride.
"The Pace" will be used. If you need to ask what that is, this is not the ride for you. If you want to know what that means, google it, or look on our front page of this site, it is there.
There is usually sub 60hp motorbikes going on this ride, so it is not about going fast, but rather maintaining a good "pace" all day.
If you think your possibilities are high to get a ticket, this is not the ride for you.
Yes, people have gotten tickets on this ride, but it is the chance everyone takes if they choose to exceed the posted limit.
This ride will not enhance your possiblity of getting one, unless you choose to.
This ride is longer than most, so the stops will be infrequent and short.
This is a chance to go on a ride and explore different scenery than what is offered on the Front Range.
That is about it, so please don't PM me with stupid questions.
If you want to go, great! You will need only a good machine and a great attitude, and a degree of common sense.

OK people, here's the meeting spot;

"Things I Learned Today
Share

Today we went for a really long motorcycle ride. I rode two-up with Kyle. The route took us from Springs, to Canon City, to Salida, to Gunnison, to Paonia, Aspen, over Independence Pass, down to Buena Vista, and back home. I learned some things along the way.

I am still a pretty good passenger.
It was absolutely the right decision to go as a passenger, I maybe could have handled the first 200 miles driving and then it would have seriously fallen apart.
500 is a lot of miles to do in one day.
Colorado is fantastically beautiful and I feel grateful beyond words to live here. OK, so that's not so much something I "learned" as something I realize oh pretty much every time I step out my front door. But it's much easier to hang onto while standing overlooking the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
I still remember one or two things from nursing school. For example, it only takes 2 hours to form pressure sores. By hour 12, I was worried about my ischial tuberosities from the seat and my ears from the helmet. Probably I am being a whiny baby, but still. Ow.
The gender distribution for a big ass ride like this still skews heavily male. At one point I was the only girl in the group of 12. At a different point I was one of 2 out of 14. I was treated like one of the guys, privy to all the burping, swearing, and generalized hooliganism. I am not sure what my point was.
Kyle needs a new seat on his Beamer if he ever wants me to ride with him again.
Really weird stuff happens to time when you're on a motorcycle. It took the first 4 hours to get the first 200ish miles. It took another 7 almost 8 hours to get the other 300ish.
500 miles is a lot. Oh, wait, I already said that. True, though.
Riding in the rain sucks. Well, I already knew that too, but I wanted to share.

So, there you have it. Motorcycles. Big ride. No tickets, no crashes. Camaraderie.Hanging out with my husband doing something fun. It was a good day. Happy Fourth of July"

Bikes have ranged from a Ninja 250 to a fire breathing G1, and everything in between. Comfort is paramount @ around the 300 mile mark. This run is not about speed, and can be accomplished doing the limit the entire route. It is about maintaining a pace all day.
As far as your bike is concerned, a competant person versed in motorcycle maintenance should be your best friend, tires and brakes should be @ the top of the list.

Yea, I hear ya. You certainly don't want to be responsible for your own bike, what was I thinkin.

Ok people, this is getting close.
A couple things to keep in mind for this event.
I am going to run this like I have in the past.

Everybody needs at least one riding buddy.
If you have a problem, whatever that is, they stop with you and deal with the issue.
The group/ride will not stop for your issues.
This ensures the group as a whole will complete the ride and have a good ride.
So find somebody to buddy up with and we will see you at the meeing spot on the 4th.

Yes, everybody in the past has found somebody to pair up with. It is a non-issue in most cases, unless you are a total douche and nobody likes you.
In that case you are on your own, and will have to rely on yourself to get you out of whatever trouble you got yourself into.

There has been quite a few persons PM'ing me about room for this ride.
The bueaty of rides posted publicly by Bash, is that there is always room for jello.
Meaning if you want to come on this ride, please do so.
The flexible nature of the few guidelines I have on my rides means that even a Ninja 250 can make this happen. All one needs is a desire to participate and a motorcycle.
So if you are on the fence about this ride, come on out and have some fun, cuz thats what this is all about.
Please prep yourself and your bike before this ride and you will have a better chance at having fun.
See you'all in Buena Vista.

Also, this is probably obvious but I didn't see it mentioned. Create a card to carry on you with your emergency contacts and any prudent medical info such as blood type.

I would make several of these. Carry one on your wallet, tank bag, inside jacket pocket, tape to the tank and back if your helmet.

Yes. In a group of sport bikes, how does the *peddle powered* bike get the speeding ticket?? It's like a damn riddle!

If you went over McClure Pass from Hotchkiss, that's a really nice ride.

I am beat from the ride.

BTW: Those two guys Bashed and gsxrscott are total jerks in real life and they ride slower than snails. Who starts a ride with a pep talk like this, "This ride is serious. If you don't want to be serious get on your bike and go home. If you are going to pass, pass on the right in the same lane your fellow rider and be a jerk about it. If a cop chases you run because none of us are going to stop and tell the cops who you are!" I'm glad I finally was able to put a face to their board names. I will never ride with them again!

Thanks for organizing the ride drift!

Before I pass out, here is the the most important picture from my old school camera:

This wasn't in the pep talk, but gsxrscott added, "Make sure you don't look at the guy wearing a snow suit in the canoe on the lake."

What a great Ride..Mofo thanks for letting me follow you for a good while or I would have been lost as hell. Thanks for showing me where the bumps where so I could avoid them  and big thanks to Bashed for putting together one of the most memorable runs I have ever had.

Now I understand what Bueller meant by Deckers is not technical, the VFR was a gem and saved my ass twice on this run:angel::angel:

Took the LOOOONG way home to get some more miles on and see some of 70 which in 5 years I have never been on little more than 300 miles and she will be at the 50K mark

Thanks for everyone in the group for being such professionals and Drift, we going to have to do something about your speed addition dude I mean really :wtf::eek:

Thanks for setting up the ride Bash. I am glad I didn't back out. That by far had to be one of the best scenic ride I have been on in Colorado. I do stand corrected on yours and Scott's rep. Scott you are old and slow. Had a great time, good to see some new and old faces.

Not a bad little route, although Independence pass isn't that much fun, with all the one lane sections n such. I'm gonna be hitting 92 next month. Been needing to do that for a while now.

Independence wasn't bad. I have never been on it before and it definitely needs a resurfacing with all the bumps and humps. That being said, it was actually one of the funner twisty bits for me personally. Would have been perfect for the sumo though.

One of the great advantages of being old and slow is getting to enjoy all of the great views this wonderful state has to offer! Hope I didn't hold too many of you up with my snail like sloweness. Just trying to give you the chance to look around and enjoy the ride! Glad everyone had a good time, as I always do on this ride!!

LMAO.....If you knew any better you would know it has nothing to do with what type of bike it is

I don't think the point has anything to do with what type of bike you're on.

And as the saying goes.... If you have to ask....

Split the diff and call it a 750. I think it's a 06 but it might be an 07.

And I'm just warming up in 500 miles. Had my bike 5 years and am coming upon 50,000 miles. Bet that wanker dont have a tenth of those miles.
