Hi all,

I got some help recently from a CSC member to get my a/c unit freon charged up. It was working fine until I cleaned out the cooling coils. I had the breaker off and hosed water from the inside to the outside as was directed.

After waiting a good amount of time for the unit to dry, I turned the breaker on and started the A/C unit. It will only run for about 1-2 seconds before a breaker pops inside the unit.

Does anyone have an idea what I can check? Maybe something just needs to be reset inside the A/C unit.

Thanks for any help you could give,

Jeff

Hummm.. Was the power off at the furnace too? Im betting the contactor got water in it.

Lets start with turn power off and switch your thermostat to off. Then Take off the cover that has all the wires going into it. Look and see if anything is unhooked (Maybe are wire off the Start Cap) look and see if anything looks burned

That is what a Contactor looks like.. Lastly turn power on and take a Insulated screw driver and push in on the center of the contactor where the plastic square is this should activate the power switch inside and turn the compressor on.

okay, thats seems to look okay... there is a small spark when I push the center in.... If I hold it in... the units appears to be operating. If I stop pushing in the unit stops.

Any other thoughts?

wow, it just started on its own... perhaps the capacitor or some other part was not ready when I first tried. I'll keep an eye on it for a few... but it is running now.

Thanks, 92° for the high today....

I had this similar issue last week and ended up replacing the capacitor.

Does the water get off all that cotton that is stuck on the fins?

I really need to clean it off but the idiots who installed my neighbors AC unit screwed me.

Pretty much his lines wrap around my unit and prevent me from taking the casing off. How can I clean that cotton out?

I've used compressed air, at times the water only relocates the cotton, rather than completely dislodging it.

Not a bad idea. I will try to do that today.

Becarefull with vthe compressed air if its too much pressure it can bend the fins. The best way is a wire brush and a light touch but this can take some time. If you try the water trick please be carefull and wash from the inside out otherwise you just pushing more stuff into the coil. Sorry if your reading this thinkin duh but I've seen simple cleans go bad in every way.

just use a hose without a nozzle or a dog hair brush.

I use the shit out of my dog hair brush doing A/C's and cleaning bugs out of car radiators. It also kind of straightens the fins that get accidentally bent.

i use the cheapest version of this brush, as rfranks says don't push the crap in, use this to pull it out.
