Since i have been on this forum i have noticed alot of people somewhat hint at what they do but its never really clear.

I myself enjoy hearing about what people do and what there jobs are because there are some pretty cool jobs out there that you would never know exist until you hear from someone who does it.

So please share with everyone what your job is and hell if you like it or not!

I work for a company called Pac-Van, I sell/lease modular buildings/Modular Classrooms/Construction Offices and Storage Containers to General Contractors, Public & Private Schools, and the general public. Been in this occupation for 11 years now, at times I really love it (when the economy is up) and truly hate it when it's down.

I've done some really cool projects in the past...ie: helped provide almost 850 buildings for the 2002 Winter Olympics in SLC, provided many buildings for each of the G.P.'s of Denver, International Golf Tourney @ Castle Pines, Mile High Music Festival, and tons of other special events in our great state. I also helped start a charter school in Commerce City with an 8plex and 8 double wides...the whole school was my buildings until they completed their ground up building, and i was making $2,500 per month alone on just this project. aaah, the good ole days.

My most interesting sale was the buildings originally built for the Winter Games in SLC, some of them are now out at High Plains Raceway.

It's a very cool business, and i've made some really good money...focus on the past tense, cause it's been very slow for the past 2 years.

So if any of you are looking to start a new business or needing some extra temp office space, hit me up.

That is all.

My Title is Coordinator of services for the company i work for which is Integrated Power Services.

We are a AC DC electric motor repair and rewind facility. We do rewinds and repairs anywhere from 1hp to the biggest ive seen so far is 20,000 HP

I deal with the Motors every now and then but my primary job for this company is Gearboxes. I actually design Motox gearboxes for Siemens make the build and spec sheets for customers and if the customer wants to buy i will go out into the shop and Assemble the gearbox from the frame up.

I am also the warranty and field service strong arm for Siemens in the Small to medium gearbox division so i go out to places and do on site repairs. Also if im not out turning a wrench they have an office for me and i handle all of the inbound/outbound freight shipments as well as i do most of the purchasing if im in the office.

I like my job for the most part i get to play with oxygen and accetaline torches quite a bit i get to sit in my office or go get dirty with a wrench. but much like any job there are downsides and this companies is that if there is a rush service call they will work you like a dog and show no remorse. I once put in a 19 hour day and was only given 3 hours to sleep before i had to get back up and work another 13 hours then make the 2 hour drive home. It was awesome money but i felt like i was gonna die!

Instructional Designer for an online college. I've designed courses in the following programs:

networking
graphic design
health care
criminal justice
paralegal
business

I love what I do mostly because I get to be creative...everything from helping the subject matter expert figure out how to write materials without relying on what text is used in a course and relying on their own expertise, to deciding what types of interactivity to use in a course that will actually engage the learners and create some sort of deeper meaning for them.

The really cool thing for me now is the fact that I was hired by a former supervisor to help with a "kind-of" start-up online college. The parent company has been around for many years, but the online college has not, so we are building almost from scratch, which includes developing processes, creating the online brand and the online course template and a whole bunch more. My talents are be used up to their capacity and I love that!

Believe it or not...I still yearn for more. Ha! I'm a dork! If I could get paid to roam around Colorado on my bike and take pictures and write stories, then I'd be in heaven. ;)

Actually I might be running a PC Repair business up in Monument soon, meeting with the guy today. I don't have much interest in computers now...but we will see what he wants. From our initial talking, the one dude he has works 6-days a week, he pays as a 1099...I already told him I don't do the 6 days a week deal...and I have two weeks in August I am gone, one for my Dual sport event and another for family. *shrug*

I like the theoretical side, the observing side (mostly robotic telescopes) and connecting the two.

My official title is manager of the Astronomy and Computer Systems section at Southwest Research Institute in Boulder. My section has observational astronomers and the IT group. Captain of the Millennium falcon, the ship that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs.

Yeah, yeah I know a parsec is a unit of distance, not time, equivalent to about 19 trillion miles or 3.26 light-years. Big deal. Since space-time is warped around black holes I was able to utilize this flaw in the universe to cut down the time and distance of the original route by flying closer to the black holes of the maw.

Ok seriously, I am a commercial pilot. When not flying I do tech work on the side. (More tech work than flying lately due to the economy).

Well, right now I've been doing deconstruction, painting, moving, electrical, and other misc. work for a friend for rent.

When I'm working in my field, I do Mechanical (how it works/how it's manufactured) and Industrial (how it looks/how it's styled) Design using a very powerful CAD tool called Pro/E. I spent 12 years working for the defense (Navy, out at China Lake CA) designing and documenting missile parts and assemblies, and machining fixturing and assembly tools. I got to spent over 6 months crawling around on F86's and mostly F4 Phantoms (AWESOME plane!) out at the hangars and check out most of the Navy planes used. I got to see a bunch of missile launches and got to roam the ranges looking for the debris. I spent 2 years designing faucet parts at Moen (have a patent), and did a 6 month stint at Dirt Devil where I redesigned some parts and saved them $7million/yr in returns. I've worked at Marconi Telecom, and then for Marine Mechanical where they machined HUGE stainless steel parts for the nuclear subs and carriers and in the same building was a company that forged/made the turbine blades out of Ti on some forging presses, one of which was the largest in the world at 12,000 tons! I spent 2 years at the NASA Glenn research center where I designed and documented parts and assemblies for jet engine and jet nozzle test rigs, and did some wind tunnel work on the 1'x1' and 10'x10' supersonic tunnels. I spent time designing parts and assemblies for varius companies here while I worked for a company in Mead, designing Decatur's new radar gun (I saw it on TV recently on "How Things Are Made"!) and designed MSA's new LT-30 safety strap housings. I also spent 4-1/2 years working for an industrial controls company designing aluminum die-cast housings for engine control modules and diesel particulate filters. I just recently did a stint at the DOE at the nuclear facility in Idaho Falls ID designing large weldments and remote tools for hot-cells. So, basically, I've had a very interesting if totally unstable career.

I work for an embedded and industrial computer manufacturer.
My title is Eng Tech III but that just really means I'm the Engineering Dept. Bitch.

They need prototype built? me.
They need that proto tested for function/compliance? me.
They need a test fixture troubleshot/repaired? me.
They need a test routine written in C? me.
They need a CAD designer for a couple weeks? me.
Re-spec a part substitution, run an environmental qualification, build/rebuild a linux server, write a failure analysis ...the list goes on and on... at least i get a lot of variety in my duties but I feel like I'm being used. I consistently perform jobs that would normally be done by someone with the title "engineer" but thus far I've only gotten promises of a future promotion.

As an aside, about ten years ago I had to visit SWrI near San Francisco to perform BIOS upgrades on 200 computers we had sold with a design flaw in the software. You guys work on some cool shit.

I always joke with my colleagues that for retirement I'm gonna go do something fun/easier paced like theoretical astrophysics.

I work for an Australian-based company that does precision monitoring of all things, computer networks. From VoIP to Base24 payment networks, and everything in between. Our software runs on virtually every major server platform, including Win, all the big flavors of IX, HPNSK, Cisco CUCM, Avaya, VMs, and others. My official title is Support Engineer, but basically if you're on our stuff, and you breaky.... I help you fixey! (Assuming it's our code of course, and not a PICNIC)

Anyway, some of our clients are biggest players on the global stage:
- 6 of the worlds 10 largest banking organizations.
- Major airlines and retail across the globe.
- US and foreign militaries.
- 6 of the worlds 10 largest stock exchanges.
- The 6 largest telco companies.
- The 2 largest aircraft manufs.
- The 3 largest oil & gas companies.
- I believe 9 of the 10 largest companies in the world.

Whatever the exact percentage is, I forget, but nearly 1/2 of the "Global 1000" as Bloomberg Businessweek refers to them, are our clients.

I'm a Paladin with 18 charisma and 97 hit points. I can use my helm of disintegration and do 1D4 damage as my half-elf mage wields his +5 holy avenger.

Sorry, you can't multiclass as a Paladin/Mage and Mages can't use swords or wear helms. The process of learning how to wear a helm and wield a sword takes away from learning magic and the metal interferes with your magical aura.

Which was always yet another retarded aspect of D&D (that 4e mostly ditched).

Combat Mages in SR never seem to worry about what they're wearing when they're slinging Hellblast, nor mages in Earthdawn, or too many other systems to list...

So D&D, it's Vancian Spells/Day and it's idiotic magic rules in general are sacred cows that simply defy even their own internal logic (not that there's much of that in gaming to begin with).

But, in the Family Guy quote that I used:

"I'm a Paladin with 18 charisma and 97 hit points. :viking:

I can use my helm of disintegration and do 1D4 damage as my half-elf mage wields his +5 holy avenger."

Clearly, he's in a campaign where he's running two characters, and while a (presumably) longsword Holy Avenger isn't a default proficiency, the half-elf could have picked up the proficiency at some point...no conflict there at all.

I haven't run D&D since the mid 90's. I've been running Shadowrun for the past 5 years and am getting ready to run a Pathfinder game for a group of non-gamers next month.

I suspect some was an attempt at balance, otherwise everyone would have played elf mages. :)

And I missed the Family Guy quote as I seldom watch it.

I guess my "Job" is managing the IT department of an Internet marketing company in Las Vegas. But I've also started a couple of companies in the past (you could say that's my passion). Starting something out of nothing. Recycling electronics is one of them. I also do a lot of IT related freelance, web developing taking up the majority of that. I also have IBS so I spend a lot of time :poo:

Guys, I realize there is a little sarcasm in there, but do that many people really still use analog tuners and RF out?? Even the most basic SDTVs have a composite in and almost everything will have a clearQAM tuner built in. However I guess I shouldn't expect too much when people still hook up their HDTV with composite and then complain about the bad picture...

i'm an IT Strategy Architect... !

I take new products/services, bring them in house and go from design/proof of concept phase all the way to implementation(and then toss it over the fence for platform teams to support).

I'm currently 2/3rd the way through a private cloud POC for our small army of developers to use for self service VM provisioning on AIX, linux and windows.

My other projects include a transition to Quest/AD bridge for unix/linux centralized authentication(moving away from an outdated openLDAP infrastructure), kicking off a POC for IBM's SVC(it makes all your block storage virtual!!) product as well as their workload deployer(it shits websphere).

and the funny part, i do all this for a company that sells office products.. sometimes i wonder if we realize that's all we do.

been in the IT world for 16 years or so.. most of it was with IBM working on everything from ibm.com managed hosting to specializing in AIX/Linux performance on the 300mm chip fab in fishkill NY(where xbox's are born).

I used to be a motor officer. For a few months, I was miserably cold. Then in the summertime, I was miserably hot. I found that 13º was the absolute coldest I could ride in. I was miserable and my hands would go so numb that it was pointless to be on a bike.

But during the spring and fall, there were some absolutely GORGEOUS days! It would be in the 40's at 0600 and warm up to a high of 68 or 70. Those days made me forget all about the cold and heat. I would log 200+ miles on those days, just cruising up to Deckers or down towards Fremont county. THose days made it a blast to be a motor officer.

It was a Harley. I don't know what the police model is called, but it's the equivalent of the Ultra Classic. The slow speed maneuverability is impressive, but that bike wouldn't go any faster than 105, and when I did have it at 105, it felt like it was going to explode.

I was very polite. So was he. But I'd have liked him more as a person if he'd have refrained from citing me for allegedly speeding like a motherfucker.

All BS aside, I was getting pinched in and cut off repeatedly by two different asshole cagers for about a mile and a half, in my attemps to get over to catch my exit. As a last ditch measure, I pounced on the throttle... just before a M/C cop with the radar pointed right at me, popped into view on the left shoulder. Funny how everybody let me slide right over then... pricks.

I got the feeling that he's not in the job for the popularity.

He was a Westminster cop on a HD.

EDIT:

EDIT:
Next time I'll try patience and just miss the damn exit...

After he gave you the ticket you should have said "So now that i got my ticket wanna see how slow your bike is compared to mine?"

How long have you been at the Division?? I left in '05. We moved back to the D a couple of years ago. It amazes me how many new faces there are down there.

For the thread--Same field as B'eye Jess- Just a different means of getting there.

Hmmm... although I've been in the field for what feels to be eons, I've only been there for about 1.5yrs. Yeah, the new faces since even I've started are overwhelming...including the number of faces that have come and gone even since my first day are staggering. Still holding on to a few of the "legends" tho, and it's always a blast to pull a shift with 'em.

Thanks for the reply. I understand CO can be great with the weather & also unforgiving. Whwn I got stopped in Feb by DPD on my bike, he said they would not be getting the OK to ride until 10days after the last mag chloride application. I also think CSP is very different in traffic enforcement than Denver and I would probably be in a car too. However some of the escort gigs would be fun? what about the Colorado Grand, looks like a nice route each year....it's cool that you at least gave it a shot, maybe if they got some different bikes in the fleet & changed up the SOP alittle your skills on the bike could be put back to good use. peace CaneZach

I did the motor officer thing for two years. I enjoyed my time on the bike, but I found I wasn't enjoying it as much towards the end. I probably put on less than 2k miles on my personal bike because I just didn't want to ride after I'd logged 800+ miles during the week. I guess the bottom line was that it was still work. Yeah, it was great being able to do something I really enjoyed, but it was still work. The best days were the ones where I'd make a ton of stops early in the morning. I would stop 3 people an hour for the first 4 or 5 hours, then I'd basically treat the rest of the day like a field trip. I'd ride down to Cripple Creek or up to Deckers, just enjoying the ride.

When we'd do escorts, a lot of them can be pretty annoying because they almost always involve bicyclists. We escort a lot of the major bicycle rides, like the Bicycle Tour of Colorado, MS150, Boulder Bolder, etc., so you aren't just riding around. You typicall have a bunch of other officers and you "ping" off each other. We'd leave about five minutes apart, then the entire day was spent riding next to bicyclists until you caught up to the officer ahead of you, then you'd turn around until you met up with the officer behind you.

Every now and then, we'd get a really cool escort assignment. I escorted Pres. Bush twice and that's a blast. It's a hundred miles an hour for as long as it takes to get him to his destination. I've done the Colorado Grand, which was pretty cool too. You see a lot of awesome classic cars and the folks are actually pretty cool.

The things I have seen....It's terrifying.

After one crash I worked I couldn't ride my bike for a month. I absolutely refuse to ride my bike in the city any more, it's just too dangerous. So I will ride to work, but that is it as far as the city riding goes. There is no one to blame but myself if I go into a mountain turn hot, hit gravel and lay it down. I can live with that. But having someone pull in front of me because they aren't paying attention? It shouldn't happen.

Yield to left turn intersections should be illegal, they cause over 65% of our accidents, and over 80% of the serious injury accidents/fatals since they are either head on or T-bone accidents. You can wait for the next rotation and the green arrow. San Diego has done this, they've eliminated 95% of the yield to turn intersections. Cars wait for the arrow.

60Pan,

I kinda figure this crowd has done their own homework and I...or anyone else in a similar field won't dissuade them (nor would I want to). Hell, I couldn't even talk myself out of a bike!!

From what I've read here (read: lurked), most folks seem to have a pretty good idea that everyone else on the road is trying to kill them. That, in both my professional and personal experience, is 1000000% true.
