Ok, not the coolest thing you've seen. But not bad for a couple hours, aluminum and hardware from Lowes, and some Pelican cases.

I wish they made a larger number of top loading cases for the sides. you get the cases local or mail order?

is ther one on the left side or is that where the exhaust is?

Just the right side (keeps it slimmer), eBay, and I may sell the other top loading one.

Thought about making the right one swivel, but not worth it. Also the bearings would probably be shot in a couple wet weather rides.

Not satisfied. Took side rig off. Will mount one of the top loading ones on each side of the suitcase one. Just need to go to Lowes and grab some large aluminum square lengths and hardware.

maybe do a quick search in your area for a metal supply house...there is a place up here i go where you can just root through their "drop" section and they sell it buy the pound. might be able to find a better variety of stock, for a ton less $

dencol has great prices and if they have a drop piece it's even cheaper obviously!

The aluminum at Lowes is really good and not too much.

Looks nice, but do you think the side cases will hold up if you take it off of the pavement?

If you are interested in soft bags at all, check out Giant Loop moto bags. They work great for that kind of bike.

They'll bounce a little but as long as I don't rail something they should be fine. It's pretty strong aluminum and hardware. It's mostly for commuting, that I want storage space. The gym, work, GROCERIES... lol.

If they break they break, I did the best I could :). Yeah, if I fell, they would probably be nice and wrecked. Would probably go top only offroad.

Looks good. They look really high up.

Do you have a cross brace between the side cases?

I built this set up for my KLR650 with Pelicans.

...and this set for my R1.

I don't have a cross brace on, do you think that's a must? I could make one real quick.

I tried real hard to avoid it on both of my bikes. Thought it would look sleaker.

The cases kinda bounce around a lot without it. If you can put a hand back there when riding and feel the bounce. On my R1 after a month of having the 1430s back there it had broken one of my welds (in steel) from the bouncing. Added a simple cross brace and now, about 15K miles later, the rack is as solid as day 1.

You can just see the simple cross brace between the cases, behind the plate in this pic.

Also, a little lower keeps the center of gravity weight lower. My R1 actually handles a bit better with the cases on than with me and a backpack.

My KLR650 cross brace is much higher up but works great.

Here is a pic during the build. I actually cranked down the suspension and layed the the KLR over on its side and mocked up the cases at full lean. I wanted to get them as low as I could but keep them off the ground for both light trail and corner carving use.

I would add a lower cross brace, or at least a leg the runs down the height of the side cases w/ some triangulation...you'd be surprised how much these things can bounce around even just street riding

Cole, what model cases you use on the R1?

EDIT: nvm...ninja'd by your above post.

Kyle, what model you use for the top case?

I'm trying to get a feel for physical size to fit a top box to my triumph, because finding a factory one is impossible/pricey.

Good call on the brace, added one bottom rear of the side cases. Took a lot of the shakes out. Thanks!

....a Little better picture to show how the 1550s hang on the KLR to give you an idea.

I can always drop them, it wouldn't be hard. But I think this will work.

Make sure there are no repercussions if that cross bar gets too hot. It's going right across the outlet of the exhaust. Don't know if it would effect the cases or paper tags?

TransNone13
Tue Aug 16th, 2011, 02:30 PM
The tag is laminated :p. It is aluminum should dissapate heal efficiently, will look it over.

Haha, I just noticed that. Obviously a touch lower would probably be better.

Sorry man, just trying to help.

And it's cool that you rock paper tags, lots of nOObs have them. :slappers:

I moved it... there will be no pictures lol. I raised it, but the dewobblization effect is identical.

Har har har, I'm waiting on the title >.<. I do hate riding with temp tags.

Thankfully there is plastic epoxy, works well for hard patching all the holes you guys made me drill :p.
