D/S & Sumo friendly.

50sGrl and I are going back up behind Central City this Thursday. Possibly heading up to the James Peak overlook & down towards Rollinsville.

Expect about half on county dirt road and half jeep trails, plated bikes a must. (No rocks, boulders, and singletrack unless we get lost)

We're both dirt noobs and will stop to explore and take pictures, if you just wanna ride we will set up meet points. I'm thinking lunch at the Stage Stop in Rollinsville.

Meeting up near the cemeteries above CC. Meet at 9am, KSU ~9:30

Yes, the little XT250 is a bit slow on the slab, unlike the KLX and the WR

Not sure yet, I forget how difficult that last leg up to the rock house is. 50sGrl and I aren't really up to boulder fields. We'll see.

Awesome day of fun in the back country!
OK, so Matty, me and 50sGrl got up to a high point and could see trails going up further.

Off one side was an obvious foot path
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6085/6104722937_8c1891406c_z.jpg

To the right of it, a rocky section that IIRC years ago, leads to a shelf road and the James Peak overlook. But there was a "no motor vehicles" sign posted by the USFS.

We didn't get much further, deciding to head back since we passed some "ranger-ish" looking dudes on the way up. So am I right, was this the trail to James Peak and Loch Lomond eventually?

That's looks like some good, clean, family fun!

Hey Jeff, could post up a link for a map, where the trail starts? I wouldn't mind heading up there but don't know where it is.

Dr. Joe Siphek
Fri Sep 2nd, 2011, 08:53 AM
I'll go ride that area w/ you sean...i've been on those trails for the last 15 years.

Jeff the trail in the background is okay to travel...if you'd have gone another 500 yards you would have been to the parkinglot/overlook. then farther up would be the rock house/lochlomond overlook.

the sign you pictured is actually an old trail that used to go straight up to the top.

Dr. Joe Siphek
Fri Sep 2nd, 2011, 11:38 AM
crap...i'm golfing next sat that i can't get out of and sunday is my neices b-day. there are so many trails up there, we could ride all day. I would def be down for the weekend after next. Let's plan something. I also have a cabin up in St. Mary's that we could use as a base camp and get to all the trails from there.

If it's a go, we can post a thread and see if any other yahoo's are in. I might know some people that'll join. Maybe I can even snag a DRZ from a friend, that way I can hit more stuff.

Sorry to jack your thread, Jefe!

the event is over...therefore making this the perfect place for jacking, wait that sounds really bad. I will be trucking my drz up to whereever we are going to start the ride. thatisall

Travis, any luck on the 17/18th? I can do it, Aracheon might be in, sounds like Jefe may be able to, this could be fun?

I ought to be able to get my bars swapped out by then.

Sean
Wed Sep 7th, 2011, 12:49 PM
Jeff, it's pretty easy. I swapped out Angela's and it was pretty easy. The only PITA is the grips. Air compressor or soapy water are your friends.

Would a bike need to be plated where you guys are looking to go? There would be a slim chance I could make it the 18th.

For me, the 18th would work better. Not sure if that would work with anybody else. Looks like I'm probably hitting up Oktoberfest in Breckenridge on Saturday.

Dr. Joe Siphek
Mon Sep 12th, 2011, 01:42 PM
sounds good. haven't ridden w/ the big boys yet...hope my little putter can keep up.

Sean
Mon Sep 12th, 2011, 01:50 PM
I'm bringing Bodhizafa's DRZ (he's on the continental divide trail, he's not going to be riding it), not the KTM950. And Aracheon is on a DRZ too, should be just fine.

Maybe start a new thread?

Dirk, any interest?

Sean

:spit: Were you checking to see what color the bottom of the skid plate was?

I don't know these trails at all. I'm going to just follow Travis. Travis, are the trails that we're going to ride big-bike friendly? If yes, come on up Scott, I'd like to meet ya.

Dr. Joe Siphek
Mon Sep 12th, 2011, 02:29 PM
i don't know...never been on a bike bigger than my 400. I'm sure they can be ridden with out issue up there tho. If not, there should be plenty of arms and legs to help w/ any tough spots. But i highly doubt the 950's will have any issues.
