View Full Version : 9/18 Sunday Ride - Alice/St. Mary's Area

Dr. Joe Siphek
Mon Sep 12th, 2011, 02:34 PM
Looks like there will be a few of us heading up to ride some of the trails around St. Mary's Glacier/Alice. The cabin is located in the town of Alice about 1 hour from Denver.

Plan on meeting at my cabin around 8:30-9am...time subject to change.

Who's in so far...

Mike Kuledge (maybe)
Wade + 1 Maybe

There are 100's of miles of trails around the area, spidering all over, we can reach Rollinsville, Apex, Central City, Needles Eye and even Empire (never done it though)...all trails are less than a mile from the cabin. Range from fairly easy to very tough (baby head boulders & steep). We will be starting at 10,000ft and climbing from there so dress accordingly.

I'll be driving my truck up that morning and can fit one more if needed, I also have a trailer that could hold 4 or 5 bikes maybe even 6 if someone wants to drive everyone up. Just let me know.

Hit me up through PM's or call/text me to verify you can make it/get directions or travel in a caravan.

Bodhizafa's exact words in his last email were, "rip the DRZ up!" So really, I have no choice but to ride the shit out of his bike. Really, it's a moral obligation. :hump:

I would like to make this, but unsure if I will be able to yet. If I can, I would probably be bringing Blake along too, so we would be sticking to the easier trails.

I'm tempted. I was thinking of going on a solo 3-day ride this Fri-Sun, but there's a bunch of other life bullshit that I need to take care of. If I did that, I'd def be ready to ride by Sunday. I'd need to borrow some trailer space tho.

hit me up arcatacat by COB friday if you want to go. Pretty sure we can fit both bikes in my pick up.

looks like we are gonna have a nice little group! beware...there may be some snow up there?

Dr. Joe Siphek
Fri Sep 16th, 2011, 09:58 AM
here's a quick route itinerary i'm thinking.

from the cabin we'll ride to fall river res and up to chinn's lake, maybe check out lake lochlomond, then back and up and over james peak, then down kingston trail and from there we can head over to needle's eye/jenny lake, or we can head towards central city and get lost on all those trails. I'll let you guys decide when we get to that point.

all in all we should put in about 30-40 miles, maybe more.

Sean
Fri Sep 16th, 2011, 10:52 AM
Sounds good to me, I don't know any of the trails. You're leading Travis!

I figured I'd throw a can of gas in the back of the truck just in case.

Dr. Joe Siphek
Fri Sep 16th, 2011, 11:10 AM
yeah i have no idea how many miles the DRZ can do? i'm not gonna lie, we might get lost too! but we'll find our way!

Sean
Fri Sep 16th, 2011, 11:14 AM
80-ish miles/tank. Less if you're flogging the hell out of it.

maybe I'll bring my gps...just in case.

I'm definitely itchin to ride. Looks like a high of 65 degrees up there.

Dr. Joe Siphek
Fri Sep 16th, 2011, 02:37 PM
okay that works too...my truck is old and i typically don't take i-70 up, i usually go up 6 till i get to the stop light then jump on i-70. So if you want to meet at the parking lot just off Hwy 6 just past golden that might be a little easier, or you can meet at my house. Let me know.

Just got home from a super fun time. Thanks to Travis for hosting us at the cabin and all the guys for making the ride a blast. I definitely want to go again before it gets snowed in.

PS: there were a couple cameras and 4 (FOUR!) GoPro video cameras documenting the day. I can't wait to see those vids.

Had a great time yesterday, the group size was perfect...i'd say we rode about 40-45 miles ish...my gps shut off a couple time so not exactly sure how many we put on. Excellent scenery, lots of technical riding and the WIND was insane at the top of james/kingston peak. Can't wait to see the video/pics! Thanks again Dustin, Sean, Chris, Ricky and Mike!!!

Hey Ricky,

Accuterra Unlimited. The reason I like it is because it has a MAP store inside the app. Everything is free, but you can download specific regions, or select the areas you want. Invaluable tool because it has topo maps.

Thanks for the awesome ride guys. I needed that so badly. I slept like a baby that night because I was so beat. Let's definitely ride again before it starts getting too cold.

OH, and Travis I was looking at the videos this morning, and I barely got you on video almost going off the side of that trail. Epic. I forgot to grab my drive before i left, but I'll eventually upload them so everyone can download them.
