I bought a new laptop. The manual says I can run
it through an HDTV and get full 720/1080 HD resolution
with an HDMI cable. The only ports are a couple of USBs
and a 9-pin socket.
So, can I use a USB to HDMI cable? Anyone doing this?

Which laptop?

Mine has HDMI, so I just yank the one out of the bluray and plug it into the computer.

It does not come with an HDMI port.
OK here is another approach: can I connect it thru my WiFi to
my Wii, and to my TV that way?

Is it possible that you are mistaking the HDMI for a USB?

Not trying to insult your intelligence, stranger things have happened...

Looking through the images of the laptops on Toshiba's site, the only one I see that has an HDMI port is the 14" Satellite pro (from the link above):

I haven't seen a USB -> HDMI adapter yet...

Well I'll be... apparently one is made relatively cheaply. This may be your only option, something like this:

May need to look into something like this

http://www.monoprice.com/products/search.asp?keyword=usb+to+hdmi&x=0&y=0

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815158188

I looked into this in the past, but then my old laptop died and I had to replace anyways.

I use a DVI to HDMI adaptor for watching trainings on my TV....not SUPER HD on my 50inch but enough to get the job done.

ok, stupid question. What is DVI? I assume Digital Video Interface. no audio?
What kind of port does DVI require.

Thanks for all the input guys.

Big part of the connector is DVI (assume your laptop has this if its newer) and the smaller end would go to your TVs HDMI input....it would not send sound just video.

Examples of video output types:

I have a spare DVI - HDMI if you want it. I bought it but it was too short. Only a 2 footer IRC.

No audio, you'll still need an audio/speaker out for sound
