Dirk's gonna have to rework his formula on the estimate when Betelgeuse goes supernova along with how fast the gamma rays will reach earth and issue a new warning before he's tried in an Italian court.

Very interesting.

Here's the thing though (and correct me if I'm wrong) but as an object with mass, any mass, approaches the speed of light it's mass becomes infinite.

So even though neutrinos have a very small amount of mass, would it suddenly consume the universe if it is actually going FTL?

The idea that the neutrinos are phasing out into another dimension is also very interesting.

You just correctly espoused Einstein's theory of relativity, that this will prove false, if true.

Which is why theories come and sometimes go--while I'm not saying this has happened, it is the nature of science to rewrite itself, occasionally in shattering ways.

If true, this is a major paradigm shift, and it'll be interesting to see what happens.

I'll explain what it means yesterday.

Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping into the future.

Dibs on the flying carpet if true.

How can I get a few of those neutrinos in my gas tank?

Clovis
Thu Sep 22nd, 2011, 09:38 PM
They're already in your gas tank. Neutrinos are passing through your body RIGHT NOW.

In science you can't really prove anything, you can only disprove other's theories and update them until someone comes along and disproves yours - the cycle continues. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if Einstein didn't have everything about the universe spot-on back in the early 1900s.

we still don't have everything spot on in 2011 either, and we never will, joy of science & finite knowledge in general...

The bartender says, "Sorry, we don't serve faster-than-light neutrinos here."

A neutrino walks into a bar.

As many have suspected, it now looks like there was an error:

bizarro world just as example, i do believe there are infinite planes reality. Yes sci fi as it sounds once those scientist in geneva exploit what there is of the god particle it might lead to doors of different reality....

chk out this crazy find..

Scientists resurrect Ice Age plant after 30,000 years in deep freeze

It was an Ice Age squirrel's treasure chamber, a burrow containing fruit and seeds that had been stuck in the Siberian permafrost for over 30,000 years.

That's badass! Technology is amazing, especially genetic engineering. I love studying genetics, just did a 10-page psych paper on identical twins separated at birth.

I wonder whatever happened with that attempt to resurrect stone-age Mammoth by fertilizing an Elephant egg with the frozen Mammoth DNA. That shit is fascinating, JurassicPark stuff, come to life!

SG1 !!!
When Clovis mentioned "FTL", I immediately thought of 'Destiny' on SG-Universe, heh.

Same with "cold fusion" if you remember that fiasco...

I sure do. In fact I attended a talk by Fleischmann on the topic around 1990.

That's what the problem was. Much less sexy than FTL neutrinos, but nature is ruthless when you're sloppy.

On the other hand, you gotta admire the skill it takes to measure things at the speed of light and trace an error in those calculations to a bad piece of wire.
