View Full Version : Grim down....

Well today I learned a hard lesson. Don't underestimate the power of your front break and just when you think you know what a car is going to do your wrong.

I was heading down 25 around 4:25 was in the far left lane on the right side of the lane about to change lanes so checked behind me all clear check my right side and there was a car in the right lane but had plenty of room for me to get over. begin to change lanes when the car in the lane I was going over too for whatever reason slams on his break and starts moving into my lane the car directly in front of me panics and slams his breaks leaving me trapped. I didn't have enough time or space between me and the car in front of me to lean to the left into the shoulder and no room to lane split so I grabbed the front brake. Giving the distance I had between me and the car I grabbed the brake too hard and too quick in a panic. End result the bike shot the rear end all the way up and shot me foreword onto the street I landed face first and the bike followed landing directly on my back. I looked up only to see the two cars take off which means there was no traffic jam that forced them to hit their brakes. With the bike lying on top of me I did a pushup to roll it off of my back and pushed it onto my leg. the people behind me stopped without hitting me thankfully and very kindly came over and removed the bike from my leg. As soon as it was off my leg I jumped up and pushed my bike onto the shoulder. Inspected my body and the bike the bike started right up and looked like all of the damage was cosmetic with the exception of my right foot peg was broken off. Everyone asked me if I was ok I said yes and they all got in their cars and drove off. Nobody called 911 or anything so I took a few deep breaths and rode home.

Upon getting closer to home is when the adrenaline wore off and when the pain set in. Left wrist is definitely sprained and my tailbone is bruised pretty good but that's it.

Motorcycle damage: broken mirror, both foot pegs broken, front fairing busted up pretty good, and tail fairing has a minor crack.

My helmet didnt get a single scratch on it jacket very minor damage, gloves took a huge impact and saved my hands, and knees had very minor scratches wore jeans I'm sure pants would have been much better.

All in all I got pretty lucky i know the outcome would have been much worst if I had hit either one of the cars. I'm not sure if I would have had enough room to stop if I hadn't grabbed the brake so hard but it was a split second thing and my reaction was to grab the brake quickly and get the bike to stop.

Sucks it happened but I know what I did wrong and I will learn from this incident. Going to take it easy get the bike fixed and will be back on two soon. I'm just glad I had gear and that the people behind me were being good drivers.

On a funny note I did that once! Merging on to I25 the car ahead of me was accelerating to merge and I looked over my shoulder to find my space. When I looked ahead again the car had decided to stop at the end of the ramp. Hit the brakes and stopped with no problem, I didn't get that high so I didn't even realize what I was doing until I let off the brakes and the rear wheel came back down

Its funny you say that I did my first "real" stoppie ever on accident. coasting down T.R.R. was getting rediculous so I started fucking around to keep from being bored. popped the bike in nuetral pulled the keys and turned to show my buddy when the cars in front of us stopped. 10 mph was how fast we were rolling but I grabbed the front brake and pulled the rear tire way up in the air let her down and stopped an inch from the cars back bumper. BTW did I tell you there was a hundred foot drop 16 inches to my right lol. Whoops.

Get better Grim we still got videos to shoot.

As far as tail bones go they hurt bad for a while but there isn't anything that can be done for them....ibuprofen. As for your wrist redness, HEAT, and swelling = a broken bone. Just something to watch for, hope you heal quickly!

All bootyhole tickling asside....

Is hovering your finger over the brake a good idea? I keep only my pointer on the brake at all times. I think it helps me keep braking smoother and in-case of emergency situations I won't be forced to wrench my fingers over the brakes and squeeze the death out of them. I have the idea that if I ever do get into a bad situation that my pointer finger isn't strong enough flip the bike.

Any thoughts?

As long as ya a hydraulic brake yes your index finger is strong enough to brake too hard. I would t keep your finger over the brake if you have some sort of retard moment or panick to squeeze your hand you will squeeze the brake. My MSF coach said always use all four fingers to brake.

4 fingers is a little overkill on our type of bikes. I can get the rear wheel up on the track w/ 2 fingers during hard braking, and I bet I could do it with just 1 too. I cover the clutch and the brake. Brake w/ 1 finger, the clutch with 2. I can't tell you how any times that has saved me. Just having them there gives you a faster reaction and doesn't give you the chance to fuck up getting your fingers in place to apply the brake.

I ride just like Mother Goose, 1 finger always on the brake and 2 on the clutch and it has saved me too. I can max the brakes out with one finger, to be honest years ago I switched from 2 finger braking to 1 finger to give better control.

Plus, if you're using 4 fingers on the brake, how are you holding onto the bars? Your thumb isn't a lot to hold on with. I know you need to be light on the bars, but basically letting go is probably worse.

I cover riding on the street, not at the track.

I use only my middle finger on the brakes, and its more than enough (brembo 19x20 helps ;)), I like having my index finger on the grip to help blip

So now this is a thread about "How many fingers..."

For what it's worth I never cover my clutch lever and I use all 4 fingers to shift.

Front break is 2 fingers.

For the break I usually don't cover. My personal style is to ride a consistent speed in and our of corners so usually engine breaking alone is enough to slow down to the correct corner speed. If engine breaking alone isn't enough, I'll drag my rear break lightly but the goal is always to have my breaking done before I start the corner.

Does anyone else apply the rear break and throttle at the same time during cornering? I have no idea why this works, it seems like it would be counter intuitive.

For fucks sake it is brakes that stop you. Breaks is when your tires get cold.

Plus, if you're using 4 fingers on the brake, how are you holding onto the bars? Your thumb isn't a lot to hold on with. I know you need to be light on the bars, but basically letting go is probably worse.

Are you Rossi? Am I Rossi? He also sticks a leg out when he brakes... what's your point?

On the track I'll use 2 fingers for braking and don't cover the brake, on the street I use 1 and I do cover the brake. We're talking about street riding in an uncontrolled environment where, if in an emergency situation, you need to move a different direction. On the track, most of your session or race, you know exactly where you need to go at all times.

I get a break at 10, maybe you need one too. ;)

I use all four its just what i am comfortable with but perhaps that is maybe why i grabbed the front too hard and flipped the bike. At the same time though if i hadn't grabbed the brake hard enough i may have slammed into one of the two cars and it could have been fatal so....

I guess it comes does to what you're comfortable with. But at the same time, if you had been covering the brake, your reaction time could have been faster, and more than likely smoother. Back when I would stunt, I could bring up the rear wheel with 1 finger on the brake with no problem. That was also with me moving forward in the seat at the same time. You'd be surprised at how well these brakes work (if they've been properly maintained).

I'm also wondering if you had slid forward in the seat as you hit the brake. Having some Stomp Grip on the bike helps a lot with that. You don't need to squeeze your knees as much with that stuff on there.

Just saying people brake with four fingers. People who are very fast.

I personally use two fingers to brake

Sorry to hear about the crash, but glad you're relatively unscathed. 25 can be a scary ride, lot's of Jimmie Johnson Wanna-be's. Were you wearing the Joe Rocket gloves? If so, I hope they helped.

This crash was before i bought them from you. check the date in the OP it was the very first friday in Ocotber. I was wearing scorpion gloves they held up very very well. However the Jo rocket gloves were great going up Squaw pass on sunday they had room for me to stick some hand warmers in them and my hands were nice and toasty the whole time.
