I have seen a few bikes loaded on flatbed wreckers after wrecks or repo's lately and I can't help but think I would be crawling back out of the ambulance dripping blood and dragging my IV bag to kill the idiot tow driver that was doing more damage than the original accident caused by the way he is trying to secure the bike on the truck.

I've see them lying on the side or strapped up to the front of the flatbed with one side of the fairing against the head board and the strap across the other side of the fairing. Another good way is upright with straps over the tank and seat.

I'd do everything in my power to have a family member come and get the bike but there are a lot of situations where that wouldn't be possible. I can't even imagine sitting in back of a cop car, cuffed, watching some bonehead load my bike on a flatbed because I was nabbed exceeding an arbitrary speed limit imposed by the man.

Easy solution - don't ride like a dumbass and you're bike won't get towed.

If you fall down and hurt the bike, getting it out of the roadway and preserving the safety of those who haven't been in an accident is the tow truck driver and officer's first priority. Protecting your personal property is a secondary concern.

Generally speaking adding assault to reckless driving is usually a bad idea

Different situation but...
Mike from Advanced Recovery took good care of my bike Tuesday. :dunno:
Had proper tie downs and let me help to make sure it didn't get any more damage.
Disclaimer: My AMA supplied roadside plan only contracts with companies that can properly tow a bike though. If you get an AMA membership and sign up for auto renewal it is by far the best $40/year you can spend.

I don't think that occasionally hitting triple digits on a public road is necessarily "riding like a dumbass". Riding a wheelie down Speer Blvd. in rush hour traffic may be, but there is a time and a place to enjoy owning a sportbike.

My point with tow drivers is that they have no concern for doing further damage to motorcycle and do not have any good way to transport a motorcycle such as locking wheel chocks or a bar harness.

Really, I wasn't serious about the assault part, unless you count imaginary assasinations. :)

Not a different situation at all, in fact, this is exactly what I was talking about. I wasn't aware that some companies can properly tow a bike. Good to know, thanks!

I hate tow truck drivers with a passion. I filed an insurance claim against a tow truck driver who fucked my bike up. Luckily I saw him tow away with it and hopped in my buddies car and got everything on camera! Let me see if I still got the pictures. FOUND EM!

D & J Towing of Evergreen was called by the Statie and they did a great job towing and storing Jeff's bike till I could go get it.

Had a bike of mine towed back to my house in my first wreck on a flatbed. The guy told me to get up on the bike and hold the brakes as he angled the bed down to unload it. Little did I know (it was dark out) that there was a ton of oil right in the center of the bed where my bike was. As the bed got steeper the bike started to slide off the bed (with me on it) until it fell about 2 feet off the back. They tried avoid taking responsibility but thankfully I got before and after pictures.
