cliff notes...

New 5.8-liter Supercharged V8

2013 Shelby GT500 EngineThe big news for the 2013 Shelby GT500 is the new 5.8-liter supercharged V8. Nearly every part of the engine differs from the old 5.4-liter engine with new cross-drilled block and heads, updated camshaft profiles, a new TVS 2300 series supercharger and an upgraded cooling system. The result is ...650 horsepower and 600 lb-ft torque, making the 5.8-liter V8 the most powerful production V8 engine in the world and allowing the GT500 capable of reaching 200 mph.

The rest of the powertrain has been updated as well with a new carbon fiber driveshaft, upgraded clutch, transmission and axle. A final drive ratio of 3.31:1 is now standard.

The Camaro is pretty porky, too. Both the Camaro and the Stang are closing in on 4000 lbs...the stock 1965 GTO in my garage weighs about 3300 lbs...how can these new cars with aluminum blocks, carbon fiber this and fiberglass that, be so freaking heavy?!?

Does all the copper in the electronics and motors, etc really add up to that much?

2012 vette ZR1 with unreal numbers at the track = $100,000
2013 shelby gt500 with a lot of poneys but will still corner like an 85 stang = probably $100,000 if you get a smokin deal????

Nope, but the comfortable seats, the luxurious interiors, the ABS modules, traction control sensors, larger brakes, stiffer sway bars, better suspension, air bags, stiffer frames, etc all do.

hehe..."ABS modules, traction control sensors" theres about 5 pounds of equipment max. im sure that the larger brake systems are lighter than the old drum brakes that were on cars in the 60's...maybe iteriors, automated componants and crash protection is where its going. not in sensors.

having stripped more than a few cars for race prep it is crazy what kind of junk you pull out and how much it weighs. and you could definitely cut out some serious weight in a modern wiring harness in just wire and sensors.

FWIW, I'd get one of the Dynacorn bodies and build an entirely "new" "classic".

Old/awesome looks, fully modern internals--even the new Boss 302 engine can be bought as a Ford crate motor now. Add some Brembos, Recaros, 6mt, and have a 2800lb monster (with IRS if you want!).

So... you basically want to recreate the car in Fast & Furious - Tokyo Drift except without the skyline powerplant?

I would... that car was bad ass!

I almost had a 67 fastback when I was in high school. I worked with a girl who's dad had died while restoring it. At the last minute, the mother decided that she didn't want her daughter seeing the car at work all the time so she refused to sell it to me. So I got a 66 coupe instead... While I loved my coupe, it was definitely no 67 fastback... And this was long before the Gone in 60 Seconds remake

/Nerd On:

IIRC the one in Tokyo Drift was running an SR20DET out of a Silvia, 4cylinder turbo, not the inline-six turbo RB26DET from a Skyline ;)

BUT, yes, I would do one of two things:
1) something similar to Tokyo Drift, with a low-weight high-HP turbo car with a good F/R weight balance that looks like the classic I always loved.

2) a retro-modern V8 mustang that looks like the old car but has a fully modern Boss 302 Crate motor, 6MT (not the Chinese shit), and an IRS and possibly a super or turbo charger, working A/C, nice stereo, but also a cage and all the trackday goodness for romping & stomping.

My mother had a '68 fastback and a '70 convertible, my uncle has had various Mustangs throughout the years, and my friend Ken was restoring his father's 69 Mach 1 when he was killed in a motorcycle accident--similar to your story I was going to buy it and finish the restoration, but the family didn't want the car around as a reminder.

Either way, for roughly the same money, I think it'd be more fun to build one of those cars than to buy one of the new ones that lack soul...and with the Dynacorn bodies, you're getting all-new metal, no rust, no ancient accidents, it's a "new" car just waiting to be built...and that's just awesome.

Article about the GT500:
200+MPH, 650HP 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 breaks cover (http://www.leftlanenews.com/ford-shelby-gt500-mustang-2013.html)
With Ford now locked in a duel of the ages with Chevrolet as the Mustang and Camaro square off on the street, track and showrooms, Ford has a new answer to Chevy’s range-topping ZL1 Camaro – and it is the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500.

While GM selected a 6.2-liter supercharged LSA V8 for their their ZL1, good for 550 horsepower and torque, Ford has now answered with an all-new supercharged 5.8-liter V8 – cranking out a downright supercar-like 650 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful production V8 in the world.
Shifting is handled exclusively by a six-speed manual transmission, which also features increased torque and rpm capacity thanks to its dual-clutch design.
To achieve such impressive power Ford ditched the 5.4-liter V8 that has powered the range-topping Mustang for years, starting anew with an all-aluminum 5.8-liter V8. The SVT folk then added a new TVS series 2300 (2.3-liter) supercharger and a significantly upgraded cooling system that features a larger cooling fan, fan shroud with high-speed pressure-relief doors, an updated and more efficient air cooler, a higher-flow intercooler pump and a 36 percent bump to the intercooler heat exchanger’s capacity.
Packing all of that power into the Shelby’s updated body also results in a top speed that eclipses the 200 mile per hour barrier, although Ford hasn’t specified exactly where this snake stops. While we are sure the massive power boost played a big role in that new top speed, Ford says there has also been considerable aero work done to this new Pony.
How much work? For one, Ford says the front fascia and splitter modifications allow for 33 percent more effective aero at 160mph compared to the outgoing model, and continue on to allow for the extreme aero loads experienced above 200mph.
New for 2013
The latest GT500 is full of new technology throughout, so much so in fact it might be a good idea to list out at least the bulk of changes in one place: new 5.8-liter aluminum-block engine, new 2.3-liter supercharger, six-piston Brembo front calipers, new and larger front and rear brake rotors, new brake pads, new downforce-generating front grilles, new and more aggressive front splitter, new quad exhaust system, (two) new forged-aluminum wheel designs, defeatable launch control system, new (optional) Performance Package featuring new SVT-designed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers and Torsen limited-slip differential, with the additional Track Package adding an external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler.
Other changes includes revised gearing in order to help better distribute the uprated power to the ground. Ford’s SVT engineers said they tested out more than 35 gearing combinations before finally settling on what you get with the purchase of the fastest Mustang ever, with a final driver ratio of 3.31:1.
How does the GT500 manage its traction problem?
Of course, when dealing with 650 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, traction management becomes a serious concern, to which Ford answered with more than just new gearing. A new, defeatable launch control system has been developed that allows drivers unprecedented levels of control, allowing for specific rpm launch points to be chosen based on elevation, tire and street temperature and other variables. This system is fully unique to the SVT lineup in that it is incorporated into both the engine control and traction control systems.
There is also a Torsen limited-slip differential that comes with the optional Performance Package, something Ford says helps even further to deliver maximum power output to the ground. Rounding out the driving dynamic upgrades are tweaks to the AdvanceTrac system, which now features appropriately adjusted steering assist levels based on the changes to the car.
“We took a completely different approach with this car so drivers can choose their settings instead of a computer making the selection,” Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief engineer, said. “Nearly every system the driver interacts with can be tailored to his or her situation including the Bilstein electronic adjustable suspension, launch control, AdvanceTrac and steering assist levels.”
Of course, with all this power comes the need to slow this 3,850lb beast to a stop, to which Ford, Shelby and SVT answered with a new Brembo brake system that utilizes new six-piston calipers in the front, along with larger front and rear rotors. Ford says it also developed new brake pads which are even more performance-oriented, intended to performance better under high-speed heavy deceleration.
Also part of the stopping equation are wheels and tires, to which the 2013 Shelby GT500 offers two new sets of forged-aluminum wheels including a unique wheel for cars with the optional packages. The 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are coupled with Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G: 2 tires on all vehicle configurations.
The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will be built at AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, and begin arriving at dealers in early 2012.

Lol, you win. I swore they took the engine out of a Silvia in the movie, but I guess it was already swapped?

I'd do a 'Stang, and probably a 68 Camaro with full modern running gear.

I respect but don't share your love of Opels, however I'd love to take an old Porsche 914 and EJ25 (STI) swap it, or do the same to a "modern classic" Audi Quattro Coupe (with all STI running gear).

yeah...Powerball...I know...I need to play it to ever have these (but my chances of winning are about the same as if I don't)...

Either way, the 2013 4200lb Mustang doesn't move me much--and those $3 plastic honeycomb grills look like the $3 shit they are...just saying...
