I've got a standard Yakima rack system on my 4Runner's roof which I use for bikes and skis. My brother-in-law just gave me his Thule cargo box, which was awesome of him to do. My question is about the best way to mount it:

It came with the generic "Quick Mount" system that is simply two long bolts and a bottom bar for mounting under the crossbars. My BIL's Jeep had wide crossbars which necessitated this system. My guess is they pitched the "Quick-Snap" mounts when they bought it. These mounts work OK but they are about 3" in between the bolts, leaving a lot of room for movement on my bars.

My Yakima bars have the plastic SnapAround clips for mounting the bike/ski carriers to the bars. Are these strong enough to hold the box? Would the newer ones (mine are probably 15 years old now) be stronger? Would I be better off to get some strong U-bolts that match the width of the current mounts vs the existing Quick Mounts?
