....but SOMEONE needs to.

If ANY candidate made this his campaign promise, he'd ceertainly get my vote:

Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.
In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.
_*Congressional Reform Act of 2011*_
1. No Tenure / No Pension.
A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office.
2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.
3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.
4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.
6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.
7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women.
Congressmen/women made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.
If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive the message. Don't you think it's time?
THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!
If you agree with the above, pass it on. If not, just delete.
You are one of my 20+ - Please keep it going, and thanks.

There is some merit to this.

One of the justifications from the 70's for the pension, higher salary, etc., was to encourage people to run for office who are not independently wealthy, so that the 99% might also have a voice.

Consider how fubar it would be if only the independently wealthy were able to seek office?

However, I don't think congress critters should be paid any more than say GS 15 salary. I do agree with them sharing socialistic security with the rest of us, however, and health care on no better terms than what the drone federal worker receives.

I don't believe anyone should be allowed NOT to pay into SocSec and have their own "special" retirement, with the exception of the military. Not teachers, etc. We all get stuck paying into it with no other choice, so should all the politicians, public works, and the teachers.

Here's how to keep the rich from corrupting our political positions: a ban on ALL political advertising. Period. No lobbyists or donations. Period. The Fed's set up a website, and TV channel, where each entrant get's equal space and airtime. The closer to the election it gets, the bottom x% are weeded out via registered i-net votes to give more time to the front runners. Eventually, there's only a handful of choices for, say, prez, and we all vote amongst them, or whatever write-in. This way money is almost completely removed from the equation.

Easy thing to say when you have the ability to "Atlas Shrug" yourself right on outta here... if Buffett said that at all...

Also, easy in concept, but what fox would vote themselves out of the hen house? Seriously...

Every day it becomes clearer that we're more and more fubar'd. You all are laughing about N. Korea and Kim Jong Il in the other thread, but look at the direction our country is heading. We're on the same path. NDAA, TSA, Patriot.

Yeah, be WE can vote them out by only voting for politicians who would stand for this. Also, We The People should be able to recall any politician (including the prez) at any time by a vote of "no confidence".

And I exercise that option every time I get a chance.

However, just once I would like to vote for a candidate that I support. Not for the one that scares me the least.

Actually, we don't. I'm talking about in between elections, if we rise up and vote the incumbent out like a vote of "no confidence" at a board of directors meeting.

That is basically how it is.

2/3 of the members of the US Senate are millionaires, and the average annual income for a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in $660,000.

Even if a few of the 99% were able to get elected to Congress, making that kind of income would soon transform them into 1%ers. At the very least, making hundreds of thousands of dollars per year insulates members of Congress from the realities of life for the vast majority of Americans.

This explains why John McCain thought that $7 for a loaf of bread was "reasonable" and it is why McCain didn't know how many houses he owned during the 2008 presidential campaign.

If you made $600,000 a year would you still be able to fathom that a $100,000 student loan is a heavy burden for a current college graduate?

And don't forget - Congressional salaries are just part of their income. Most members of Congress get additional millions from wealthy benefactors and corporate lobbyists.

I really doubt that came from Warren Buffett, he's a left wing nut job billionaire that loves big government.
