So is anyone using the Contour helmet cam? I got one for x-mas and I really dont want to stick it to the fairings of the R1 (no real "flat" surface anyway) and was hoping someone might have derived another method or chose a different mounting piece that I could look into. I have tested putting it on the helmet but not enough of the DST is making contact for me to trust it.

I have not mounted mine to my bike yet, just used the goggle strap for snowboarding. You could probably devise something with that strap; should have came with it.

I don't know if the mounts are the same as the GoPro, but I have mine on the front fairing, the end of the tail, and the lower left fairing. Another on the side of my helmet.

They actually are easy to remove if you don't want them on there permanently. Just heat them up with a heat gun and they will come off with some elbow grease.

The Countor cameras are designed for helmets and that's where I would leave it. Get a GoPro for bike mounting.

But if you insist, you can buy a tripod mount adapter and then screw in a RAM ball at the end to use with a RAM mount.

RAM Mounts are generally accepted as the best mounting option. The rubber ball allows for any angle and also reduces vibrations from the motorcycle to the camera.

Tripound Mount adapter:

Ram Mount ball

From there you can build your own mounting ideas, here's some:

(The article talks about mounting GoPros but with the adapter you'll be able to mount the Contour the same way).

This is not true, they are made for bike mounting too and have great stabability. Numerous videos of people using them on sportbikes, bicycles, cars, etc.

I know what you can do with it... sell it and buy a gopro  Stop being a follower Grim  My bet is you have never really used one right? I only say this because I have no complaints with mine. Just got a 32gb SD card for it! Best yet is I paid under $100 for the Countour HD.

Yeah it came with the goggle strap mount and 2 others that are the smaller permamanet helmet mounts. I like the strap mount you listed, and have considered the universal mount for attaching to a tripod and then making a piece that attaches at the mirror mounting point on the fairing stay. That would provide some anti-vibration and make it easier to move around.

The contour? Actually i have i don't like it i prefer my Gopro no following necessary. Is that the Contour HD? Not sure if there are different models. I could never see the difference other than price on them; but I have not used the GoPro otherthan the videos I see online. Both do 1080p. I thought the Countour was much smaller; especially for the slopes. Guys look funny with that giant thing on the top of their helmets I thought. Not dogging either though...both good for what they do I thought.

Tons of different mounts on their site http://contour.com/products

Yeah I got the HD with GPS, which is the other reason I didn't choose the GoPro. I wanted to be able to keep a record of the elevation changes and speed for snowboarding and a trip log of the canyon rides (without having to carry another device) and the GoPro doesn't offer that option. I have friends that really like the GoPro but like you said its bulky and it also has to have a case to keep it from getting wet. The contour is waterproof to I think 2 meters.

I safety wired the waterproof case to the side of my fairings, then was able to slide it in and out of the case. Results:

'06... I use both the GoPro and the Contour. The Contour works great on the helmet (not the top of the helmet... the recording is too weird/extreme). Place the mount on the left side of the helmet, around the ear area, just behind where the face shield ends at the hinge. You will need to experiment with the up/down orientation depending on how much you lean forward. Once I got it right I marked it with a marker on the mount. Now I just connect the cam quickly knowing the left/right, the up/down, and the rotational orientation is just right. The mount sticks well. Let it "cure" overnight. I've never lost the cam, and this includes at some serious speeds. The Contour was an unfailing workhorse for many of the book's ride videos.

The featured video at the book's YouTube hosting site is the Contour placed as noted above. http://www.youtube.com/user/rmridervideo

Bunch of other examples here... http://rmridervideo.com
