This is about as much 'off road' as the XT gets to see during the week. Perfectly suited to London’s city roads the XT nips through traffic, barks its way up to pedestrian crossings and now the newly fitted GPR twin cans ensure that everyone knows it’s coming.

Aside from great visibility and comfort the fuel economy is proving to be excellent too; £13 fills a tank and gets me 135 miles worth of road dominating mileage.

With the new-found off-road capabilities I’ve been looking into the Green-Lane scene and it’s been really good fun. Many of Kent and Sussex public byways (off road tracks that are open to powered vehicles) have been closed over the years because of some gaping holes in legislation and miserable old land owners. However some still exist and on consulting my local land ranger map the little pink crossed tracks denoting a 'byway' can be found scattered all over the place.

There is one short byway very local to me and pretty much on the way home. With a short diversion even in the dark I can get my off-road fix. Needless to say this fix is only on a 0.5 mile stretch of muddy track and I’ve found myself desperately excited to seek out the other pretty much hidden, more extensive lanes in the area.

The green lane scene is almost underground with riders and enthusiasts of all ages desperately fighting the government to keep some of these glorious parts of the countryside open so that we as bikers can enjoy the dual purpose bikes the manufacturers are producing.

This weekend I’m going to check out 15 of the best routes within a 25 mile radius of Steven's Towers. Allthough the tyres are dual purpose im not conviced they will stand up to much mud. Hopefully they will be nobbly enough to keep me going. wish me luck!

There are a lot of euro bikes that I wish would make it over this way. :(

I'd love to try this!

Those Tenere (and the Super Tenere) are really appealing. I think this one happens to look like a better looking KTM, perhaps one day we will get better access to some of these cool bikes.

is that a different bike than this?:http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/products/modelhome/651/0/home.aspxSimilar. The link that you posted is for the Super Tenere and the pic I posted is the Tenere. The super got imported to the states this last year and is a 1200cc bike. Similar to the BMW1200. The one I posted is a 660cc.

I think the Duc, at least the restyled one like yours (the first versions were motorcycling equivalents of the Pontiac Aztek), looks good, and I REALLY want a 990 Adventure R. They're still too heavy, but, it looks to be the most dirt-worthy of them all while still being streetable, and that's what I want. I rode one of 2 that came to the US for demo's of the Yamaha Tenere (or Super Tenere, I can;t remember) last year. I liked it, and I honestly think a parallel twin is the best twin (instead of a V-twin) for motorcycling purposes as it's a very tight package. I thought it was too heavy though, and that the KTM's dirt skillz are better.

Can we coin the term "Pugly"? :)

Why can't the same attention to weight that is made on the MX'rs or hard-core sportbikes be done on these dual sports? I saw a GIXXER 1k-powered dual sport that allegedly weighed about 375 lbs and looked bad ass, can't seem to find it now.

Actually, that's what Jenny referred to it when I told her I bought it. So no, the term "Pugly" is already common property.

I separated it for this thread because I didn't want Sean to get confused and all butthurt by thinking I was referring to his bike as "Fugly".

 Sorry, but the KTM Adventures are Pug Ugly... A bike only owners would love... just like my duc! It's a little true. I started falling in love with the KTM after riding one and watching the rally style in the Dakar. Once you ran roost dirt at 2k rpm's, you never go back!

They're still too heavy, but, it looks to be the most dirt-worthy of them all while still being streetable, and that's what I want. They are heavy, but so are all of the bigger DS bikes. IMHO the 990/950 are way more dirt friendly than it's competition. My 950 is a big, angry dirtbike that can cruise comfortably on the interstate after I'm done playing.

next on my "I Want" list. A big mildly hot headed (not full on angry) dirt bike to go where I'm afraid to take the duc. Those plastics aren't cheap!

Keeping a look out for an older XR650 or DR650.

Keeping a look out for an older XR650 or DR650.They have only been making it for a few years, but look at the KTM 690 Enduro.
65 hp
64 nm torque
300 lbs curb weight
6-speed

Plus you can get a rally kit for the bike, so it looks more like a 950/990. :bday:

Oh great... just added another to the list... sans the rally kit.

Precisely my good sir...

I've seen a few of them, SV650 fit with DR650 suspension. From what I hear they make amazing dualsports! (God knows the DL650's suspension isn't up to the same task!)

I'll have to ride one someday. Ugly (but who am I to judge), but probably rides pretty well. Not sure if I'd want a single front brake rotor with a sportbike engine? The SV's front brakes were squishy enough, going to DR brakes doesn't really help that at all.
