I am looking to get opinions on this helmet from people who acctually use it. I know Bell has been on the upswing the past few years on quality.

How is the fit ? What else do you wear to compare it to?

Just pretty much how do you like it and would you recomend it?

Thanks

Don't have one, but haven't seen a bad review yet. 303 has them as well.

My race trailer was stolen last summer with all my gear in it. In the race weekend that followed I borrowed a Bell RS1 from another racer and have to say that I really liked it.

The helmet fits a bit like a Shoei, has great ventilation, and is reasonably light. The visor is good, but I didn't have to change it so I have no information on how that process goes.

I would certainly consider one if I was in the market.

Try one on before you buy it!

Bell makes nice helmets and their graphics are kicka$$ but they definitely don't fit me like a Shoei (sorry Rybo). My head fits in the upper end AGV lids, Shoei RF series, and Shark RSI series perfectly. The Bells hit me in all the wrong places and I can't wear them (unfortunately).

My wife had bought a Bell Arrow and it didn't fit me well but i've heard the fit on the RS-1 is different. I'll definetly want to try it on first though.

*EDIT* i called 303 and they have an RS-1 and a Star in M so i'll go try it on this weekend. Anymore input on it is appretiated.

The visor change out on Bells are ridiculously easy. One lever on each side, and the shield pops right off. The RS-1 doesn't quite fit my head(too round) the way the Vortex/Star does. Another plus is they have an optional photochromic shield, aka Transitions, that works awesomely. I only wear Bell helmets, have since I got back into riding in '07. I have one of these:

And one of these:

They are both the 'Vortex' model. Can't beat em for the price.

the RS-1 is too round or your head is?

The RS-1 felt too round for my head. The other 2 are more semi-oval (intermediate oval?) shaped.

from the research i've done the RS-1 and the Star are the same shape and are more intermediate oval than the arrow and vortex. i'll just have to put them on my head

Perhaps I just have an odd shaped head, since the Vortex and Star both fit, whereas the RS-1 was uber tight in the same size. In any case, you'll be happy with any of them, I'm sure.

Hit up Jason if you do. He'll probably give you a killer discount. I know they have a ton in stock and are offering the Triumph guys insane deals.

I like mine. It is a matte black, which choice may have been a mistake, but it fits and I love the "transitions" visor.

So after reading Gary's response, it turns out he's right - it wasn't an RS1 that I wore, but a Star.

Also, I'll say that the Shoei I compared it to was not an RF, but an X11/X12

The Star is the lightest, most plush, and most ventilated helmet I've ever put on my head. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

RS1 is my fav helmet and I've owned quite a few. Get the transitions visor.

why don't you like the matte black?

Sorry I missed this earlier. It seems to chip easily, and mar and show any sort of shiny, oily, bug guts, much more than a really painted glossy finish such as on helmets I have owned in the past.

Other than that, though, I would not hesitate to recommend the helmet.

I used to use Bell helmets exclusively back in the day. But, they seemed to lag behing the Shoei ad Arai helmets in terms of safety in the mid-'80's mostly in not having styrofoam in the chin bar. so, I switched to Shoei because they fit my head better. Then, shortly after, the lawyers at Bell decided that they should get out of the street market. I'm glad to see them back in it, and have actually looked at some of the cheaper models for very occasional use for my kids. Glad to se they seem to be producing a quality product again.
