So I just picked up a 12-gauge shotgun (due soon to arrive), and I was wondering what type of "plinking" loads I should buy, to put the gun through it's paces and get some practice in with? It's 5+1 s/a Escort MP-A.

I'm assuming that Walmart is the place to go for ammo on the cheap?

Yeah simple small game shot. I havent bought rounds in a while but used to get 100 rounds for like 40 bucks. What did you pick up?

I was looking at O/Us this morning... My 870 express makes a piss poor sporting clay gun.

Wally world for bird shot. $5-6/box

Oh, and there aint no plinking when it comes to a 12ga

I'd also try Sportsman's Warehouse, they have tons of boxes of regular bird shot that makes good plinking. I think I picked up a couple boxes of 100 for around $35 or $40 but that's been a couple years ago.

Also for a nice home defense. Use 000 Buckshot. Regular 00 buckshot is good too but 000 does do some nice damage :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll be on the lookout for 100 rounds to be ~$40.00. I'm not sure what any of the terminology means just yet, but obviously it seems I'm best off with "birdshot" rather than "buckshot" for now.

At some point though, I think I would like to see how I can do with a saboted slug out at 50 or 80 yards or whatever. Do any of you guys, ever scope-up a shotgun and shoot them for distance with slugs?

What did you pick up?

It's an Escort MP-A

Here's some stock footage, I clipped from their site...

I just buy it at walmart by the case. It's cheap and works. See if you can feed 2-3/4" or 2-1/2" shells rather than the 3". You'll save some money and you really don't need the 3" ones for messing around. You might also want to get some different chokes if you're interested in shooting some skeet.

7 1/2 or 8s, cheap as heck at MallWart. You may have to play with the gas regulator to get it to cycle reliably with skeet/trap/sporting clay loads, but regular field loads should work fine at factory settings. Heavy buckshot or slug loads may require adjustment as well to avoid over gassing the action and battering the frame.

Edit: looks like the gas system is pretty much self regulating.

Depends on what you are doing. I usually use light target loads when I shoot trap. You can pick up 100 shell boxes of universal loads on the cheap at Walmart.

Another thing to consider is steel vs lead loads. Some places require steel loads, typically have seen it around lakes and ponds. Make sure you check what you can shoot before you go. Don't believe the national forests have any restrictions. Also be aware of the differences between steel and lead.

The same number shot can have a huge difference in the number of pellets per load. Also steel deforms less, keeping a truer flight leading to a smaller 'hit' zone.

Steel is required around wetlands and for any waterfowl hunting.

Nice Barn. As for the rental, looks very nice but I'd buy a fixer upper before spending $1900/mo on rent. Just me tho.

I hear what you're sayin' John. I'm not much of a fixer-upper though, and with something like this, I think I could get a few hundred off the rent if I sign something for 36 months or longer. The more I watch the ebb and flow of "homeowners" I know, the happier that I am, that I'm not wrapped up in a huge mortgage. Plus, as lot of these "renters" will do rent-to-own contracts as well, which I like. Let's you test drive the place, so-to-speak.

Although you know I would still encourage you to BUY a house, but I know you have your concerns (which I've never understood since to me a house is one of the best investments you can buy, but to each their own). It is a buyers market right now, so would be the perfect time to me.

Anyways, pretty slick gun! I think my next gun will also be a shotgun! Guess I won't saw the barrel and handle off though like Cypress Hill told me

You don't really need a scope for that distance. Most shotgun scopes are at max 4 power. A red dot will do nicely on that. T-1 or h-1 would be Ideal but that'd double the price of the gun.

Vortex makes good ones for reasonable prices, also you can run primary arms clones of the t-1 without much worry.

Stay away from the burris fast fires if you want it for home defense.

You're going to probly have better accuracy out of a rifled slug than a sabot with a smooth bore barrel but if you want to go for accuracy you're going to need a wide selection since shotguns vary quite a bit model to model as do each brand of slug type. You may find 3" slugs much more accurate than 2 3/4 due to the gap in the chamber but hang on tight either way.

So I hadn't heard of these until now, but given what they look to be selling for I'm suddenly intrigued. For the ~$400 range that is a lot of gun. Out of curiosity, why did you go with the 5+1 instead of the 7+1? Just to get the shorter barrel?

Re ammo, I found this page while googling your new toy. Scroll down on the page, the guy range-tested a bunch of different ammo and found many that worked great, but some that would not cycle the gun. Maybe you've already seen it, if not then perhaps start here and avoid the stuff that didn't work.

Yeah, I've had my eye on this Escort model for some time now. A local gun store here in Denver (Prairie Arms) carried them for awhile, but they were in-&-out of stock so often, that I never settled it in my mind to just buy one. If I'm not mistaken, they used to sell them for ~$395.99.

Anyway, long-story-short, the people who run P.A. ended up retiring and the business is now closed, so buying it from them is off the table. Upon renewing my search though, and found this one for $419.99 (free shipping), and better still a guy near my home does FFL transfers for $20.00. So yeah... For all of the features it has, I think it'll make a nice first shotgun for me. Figured I'd better strike while the iron is hot, and it's still a reasonable price range.

And to your question Ralph, the 18" barrel is what they had for sale, so no real reason other than that, for picking that one. Seems like most of the ones I see for sale are this one.

Here's a good youtube review of the gun (http://youtu.be/d2YFYLxGmQk) (albeit in a language I don't understand).

Yeah, cash gets a 3% price adjustment from Bud's. I actually had been looking at this gun too on their site, and it looks like they dropped their price since the last time I checked! It was closer to $450 not that long ago! Oh well...

I actually called GunsAndGear and asked them if my order has shipped yet. They told me that it hasn't, and when I asked if they'd price-match, he told me that they couldn't, but that he could refund me my purchase price. It was tough, but I told him not to worry about it and to let the order go through. Figured that's better karma, then going through the refund hassle and then placing new order with Bud's.

Maybe G&G will sweeten the deal and send me some ammo or something. :dunno:

Wow.... Now I really have no idea what's going on at Bud's!!

Yesterday it's $347, and today it's back to $465?? :wtf: (seriously... try the link again...)

So was that a pricing mistake on the website, or was it like some super-secret 1-Day sale? If it was a mistake, I wonder if they would have even honored the purchases made, when it was being shown at the lower price?

I've bought guns with Bud's before (and I like them), but shit like this makes me wonder...

EDIT: And oh yeah! Thank goodness I didn't cancel my order with thegunsandgearstore.com (http://www.thegunsandgearstore.com/)!
