What are you guys using for lap timers (outside of the Transponders)? Looks like their is some new stuff out on the market but its still pretty spendy. I assume most are using the GPS style since the beacons are less reliable?

I am looking for something that is battery operated so I can swap it between bikes easily and is easy to use.

Beacons are pretty reliable and still being used quite a bit. They are very affordable and a lot of the time others will have a transmitter out so you don't need one.

I am using my old droid with a GPS laptimer app

Dave how accurate is that? Last I used GPS from cell phones it's just too innacurate because they aren't made for such precise measurements. Although, that was a couple years ago.

Right now I just put my video camera on, then click a stopwatch as I watch the laps. However, if and when I start fo reals racing, one of the final purchases on my list is a transponder..... Those can tell me my lap times right? I'm no Colin Edwards so I don't need to know within .002 seconds

A transponder, like those used by the MRA, are only used on race weekends is my understanding. In addition, they do not have a screen or anything so you have to get the print out after the race.

Doing a little research online points me to two different models:

1. http://aimsolo.com.au/index.php
2. http://www.xtracing.com/en/products.php

Anyone have any experience with these? Any others worth considering?

It was accurate to a couple tenths of a second when compared to my AMB transponder. That's close enough for me for the price. The transponders will only give you times when the system is up and running during the race weekend and then you have to go look at the printed out sheets in the raceday office, there is no way for you to access times from a transponder.

I have used the XT ultra and an AIM Mychron lite. They are very basic and give you lap times and thats about it. If you want all the data you have to spend the $ for the GPS timers. My phone is in between the two giving me times and some data about the track and speed at different areas.

GPX Pro is best bang for the buck if you go with a GPS timer. Comparable timers from companies like Starlane are more costly. XT Racing is really good about repairs and warranty work.

Agree 100%

I've had the starlane and now the GPX pro. The GPX has a better user interface, is easier to use and cost less.

No brainer

For a basic timer the basic XT model is tough to beat too. Nice products, good prices.

Hey Joe, I have a like new XT Ultralap kit with beacon that I'd consider parting with for $175. Used it that last portion of last season. Price can't be beat and I don't think it ever missed a lap when talking about reliability.

Sorry, I HAD this until moments ago. The ultra laps are great though. Just having it tell me how slow I am made me go faster each time out. Nothing like racing against yourself, except of course racing against other people.

No sweat. I am leaning towards the GPS version anyway.
