By Associated Press
LA PUENTE, Calif. -- Los Angeles county animal control officials are heralding the loyalty of a black Labrador retriever that braved traffic to stay by another dog that was fatally struck by a car.

A motorist who saw the dogs on a La Puente street Wednesday morning put down traffic cones to alert other drivers and shot video of the dogs. The video released Saturday showed the female Labrador lying next to a motionless, yellow Labrador as vehicles pass dangerously close to them.
The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control says the 2-year-old dog, who animal shelter staff and volunteers have named Grace, appears to have been well cared for.

UPDATE: City News Service reports that the man who set up traffic cones to protect Grace and her canine companion has stepped up again -- this time, to adopt Grace. According to Sherman Oaks Patch (http://shermanoaks.patch.com/articles/the-man-who-helped-the-loyal-lab-ended-up-adopting-her), Grace will be spayed at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center and then released to her new owner, who has not been named.

Saw this yesterday. Looking at the picture of the dead dog lying there and the black Lab nearby really tugs at your heartstrings. So sad. :(

Props to the motorist that put down cones too. And they found the Lab's original family too, so that's cool she's back home.

Kind of confused, some articles say the black lab is going to a new home while others say the owners claimed the dog?

Either way, great story about the black lab, definitely more loyal than a lot of people.

I find it funny that more people have more sympathy, however much sympathy is deserved, for a dead dog than for the riders who died in the video that Slo posted elsewhere. With comments ranging from "they deserved it" to whatever. We can;t see what happened prior to the rider cresting the hill. Maybe he hit some sand, or avoided a pothole, or whatever. It LOOKS like he just badly overshot the corner, but..... THAT, shows me that yes, dogs are better than people more than this news clip.

I don't think I saw Slo's rider vid, unless it's that one where he got completely destroyed by the truck. I doubt anyone would say a rider "deserved" anything bad, unless they were drunk or similar. People make bad decisions or mistakes, shit happens.

Yeah Slo, Fox says one thing, CBS says another. Either way is a (relatively) happy ending anyway though, if you want to look at the bright side.

A five-year-old girl born with disabilities is all smiles today after being reunited with her beloved service dog Millie (http://www.examiner.com/animal-welfare-in-philadelphia/stolen-service-dog-returned-to-blind-little-girl-kansas), who was stolen two weeks ago from the girl's home in Hutchinson, Kan., the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Examiner reports.

Millie was found on the front porch at around 3:30 a.m. on Thursday morning and, as soon as she was let indoors, she rushed to the bedside of her owner Andrea Taylor and tried to wake the girl up, according to the site.
"Andrea woke up and come out [sic] to the living room and said, 'There her is. It's my Millie,'" the girl's mother, Lana Taylor, told KSN News Kansas (http://www.ksn.com/news/local/story/Blind-girls-stolen-dog-returned/nm8MHzu4pkaKs1nZIGh-gw.cspx).
Andrea Taylor, who was born with cerebral palsy and is visually impaired, received Millie in early March and immediately bonded with the dog. Lana Taylor said that for the first time, her daughter was sleeping soundly through the night without crying.

"She wasn't ever going to be a normal child," Lana Taylor told Fox News after the dog was stolen (http://www.ksdk.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=315573). "When Millie come along she was able to have a little more independence. Outside, she was able to run with her siblings."
But just three weeks after Millie arrived, a van pulled up in front of the Taylors' home, called the pit bull into the car, and sped away. Andrea was devastated, and the family posted a $450 reward for Millie's safe return.
No one knows who dropped Millie off early Thursday morning without claiming the reward, but Lana Taylor thinks the abductors had attempted to use the pit bull in dog fights.
"She definitely was at least neglected or abused, I'm thinking she was used to fight," Taylor told KSN (http://www.ksn.com/news/local/story/Blind-girls-stolen-dog-returned/nm8MHzu4pkaKs1nZIGh-gw.cspx).

An employee of the Kansas Human Society told Yahoo! that underground dog fight rings are pervasive in Kansas City (http://voices.yahoo.com/dog-fighting-kansas-city-468393.html), as well as other cities throughout Kansas, and that cracking down on the activity is extremely difficult because those involved are meticulous about covering their tracks.

In many cases, Kansas traffickers ferreting dogs into the state apply for Missouri license plates to elude police officers, the woman said.

But authorities are launching more programs aimed at discovering dog fighting rings and prosecuting those involved.

Last year, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals announced plans to create a nationwide database of DNA taken from rescued dogs (http://www.kmbc.com/news/24062308/detail.html) that could be used to trace dogfighters, KMBC News reported.
The database was announced after a dogfighting investigation in Missouri led authorities to find underground rings across Missouri, Illinois, Texas, Oklahoma and Iowa. They were able to rescue over 400 animals (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/09/us/09dogs.html), many which were pit bulls, boxers and rottweilers The New York Times reported.

To some people, they're not messed up values. If someone duct taped my dog to a fridge, I'd do some shit that probably shouldn't be said on public forums.

God forbid that a shelter spay a dog to prevent it from having more pups that will probably wind up homeless and then putting it up for adoption. I'm sure they tried locating the family the dog belonged to, and from what it sounds like, they might have already done so.

Tou Chih-kang, Taiwan Photographer, Captures Doomed Shelter Dogs On Camera
(PHOTO GALLERY)

TAOYUAN, Taiwan — The photographer gingerly places a small, mixed-breed puppy on a platform in his makeshift studio at an animal shelter in northern Taiwan. The dog looks about 2 months old, with alert, trusting eyes and a shiny black coat.

Tou Chih-kang captures expressions, personality. He creates the kind of photos that any pet owner would love to have.

This puppy has no owner and will not get one. Once its photo shoot is over, it will be taken away by vets to be put down.

Tou has been recording the last moments of canines at the Taoyuan Animal Shelter for two years. He has captured the images of some 400 dogs, most of which were pets abandoned by their owners. To him the work is distressing, but he's trying to spread a message of responsibility.
"I believe something should not be told but should be felt," says Tou, a thick-bodied 37-year-old with an air of quiet confidence. "And I hope these images will arouse the viewers to contemplate and feel for these unfortunate lives, and understand the inhumanity we the society are putting them through."

His photographs are redolent of the kind of formal portraits – of people – that were taken 100 years ago, designed to bestow dignity and prestige upon the subject. In many of the dog portraits, the animals are placed at angles that make them look almost human.

This year Taiwanese authorities will euthanize an estimated 80,000 stray dogs. Animal-welfare advocates say the relatively widespread nature of the phenomenon – Taiwan's human population is only 23 million – reflects the still immature nature of the island's dog-owning culture and the belief among some of its majority Buddhist population that dogs are reincarnated humans who behaved badly in a previous life.

It would seem, judging by the many stores in Taiwan that sell fancy dog clothes and other baubles, as if Taiwanese fawn over their animals, and some do. But others abandon pets to the streets once their initial enthusiasm cools.

"Animals are seen just as playthings, not to be taken seriously," says Grace Gabriel, Asia regional director of the Massachusetts-based International Fund for Animal Welfare.

Activists say that some 70 percent of dogs in Taiwanese shelters are killed after a 12-day waiting period, despite government efforts to find them homes. Gabriel says dogs in U.S. shelters are less likely to be euthanized, though millions of cats continue to be put down there each year.

The dogs who wind up in Taoyuan are picked up by roving patrols, funded by local governments, of workers equipped with large nets.

The dogs come in all sizes and shapes. Some are young and active, others grizzled, listless and battered. After Tou photographs them, veterinary workers take them for a brief turn around a grassy courtyard before leading them into a small, clinical-looking room where they are killed by lethal injection.

Tou, who uses the professional name Tou Yun-fei, says he began his project because the Taiwanese media were not paying enough attention to the dogs' plight. He says he doesn't believe in having pets, but the problem had long plagued his conscience.

He says that while some of his friends refuse to even look at his photographs, others say the images taught them to take pet ownership more seriously.

A handful of the some 40,000 dog pictures Tou has taken are due to be exhibited this August in his first full-scale show, at the Fine Arts Museum in the southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung.

A few photos already are on display at Taoyuan city hall, part of a bid to raise citizens' awareness of the responsibilities that come with raising a pet.

"I am a medium that through my photography, more people will be aware of this issue," he says. "I think that's my role."

There's a documentary on HBO right now that details the overpopulation of dogs that we have in the US right now. Some of the images were just too much for me to bare. But, the great stories were awesome to watch. For example, the lady who devotes all of her time to boarding strays in her community. And the people who can only rescue a few at a time.

I should just retitle the thread "Why people suck"

http://i.huffpost.com/gen/679247/thumbs/s-CAT-IN-CONCRETE-large.jpg

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/09/cat-buried-in-concrete-colorado-city-az_n_1660320.html?

A live cat was found recently half-buried in concrete, and the man who rescued the kitten believes it was a message from a pro-polygamy religious group.

The incident happened recently in Colorado City, Ariz., a major center for the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a Mormon sect that split off in the early 20th century in order to continue the controversial practice of plural marriage.

The kitten was discovered at the home of Isaac Wyler, a former church member, who has spoken out against the church and its controversial former leader Warren Jeffs, according to AzFamily.com. (http://www.azfamily.com/news/watkiss/RAW-Mike-Watkiss-interviews-former-FLDS-member-Isaac-Wyler-116862843.html)

Jeffs, who was found guilty last year of sexually assaulting two underage girls he had wed, is currently in protective custody in a prison in Palestine, Texas, serving a life term plus 20 years. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/07/colorado-city-warren-jeffs-security_n_1579642.html)

Andrew Chatwin, who, like Wyler, is a former member of the FDLS, found the cat inside one of a metal tube used to construct cement posts, according to RightThisMinute.com (http://www.rightthisminute.com/video/cat-found-buried-concrete-arizona).

In order to rescue the cat, Chatwin had to cut the post and dig out the footing. He took the feline to an animal sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, (http://www.bestfriends.org/index.htm) where it died a few days later.

Chatwin, who left the FLDS 13 years ago, believes the cruel act was done by members of his former church. He claims both the threats and the animal killings have been going on for years.

Chatwin also claims that when he reported the cruel act to Colorado City sheriffs, they didn't seem too concerned.

"[The officer] kind of chuckled and laughed a little bit and then he said that if it was up to him, he'd just throw dirt on [the cat]," Chatwin said. "And this is coming from a city marshal who's a member of the FLDS Church."

Wow, such horrible numbers! Make me sad and also so angry that 70% of people who get a pet can actually give them up. WTF, so only 30% of people have a big enough heart to keep them; doesn't say much for the compassion of humans.

Government needs to crack down on these puppy mills and all the people that buy their pets from breeders. If we made all those shut down and forced people who wanted a dog to adopt then it would help so much.
And before anyone attacks me about bulldogs my dog was rescued at 18 months old. I admit when I was 18 years old I did buy a bulldog from a breeder because I was dumb back then (and it was always my dream to own a bulldog), but I did have that dog it's entire life until he died at 13 years of age. Our dog now (Austrailian Terrier mix) was adopted from a shelter and sad to say the next week nearly 70% of the dogs in that shelter were put down and pretty sure he would have been one. He is a great dog and so loving; so sad to think how many great dogs get put down!

People, please keep your dogs no matter what. This bs with you can't get afford a yard, dog has disobedience issues, pees on carpet, etc is you just being selfish most of the time. Things can be done!!!!

Pets are seen as disposable, don't like what you got, doesn't do what you want, get rid of it and get another--just like any other toy.

And it's not just dogs and cats, when my mother ran her equine rescue we saw the same thing with horses--even breeds that cost $10k and more.

No one wants to take responsibility for how their actions influence their pet's behavior, and no one wants to bother putting in the time and effort it takes to actually train anything.

All my dogs and my cats are/were rescues, most were "special needs" of some kind or another, and yet with some time, patience and a real attempt to bring them around, all of them became excellent pets.

But, you're right, we do need stricter laws and penalties for cruelty/exploitation, and stricter enforcement of the laws already on the books--but all of that takes money, and takes people willing to be enforcement officers, and in our economy, no one cares about people, let alone pets...

Yup still hate people.

More wonderful news to brighten your day. Arizona legislature has passed HB-2780, so AZ ranch dogs are partially exempt from animal cruelty laws. THANK YOU JAN BREWER and the rest of your backwards-ass 'necks & cronies...

http://www.animalpeoplenews.org/anp/2012/07/03/how-arizona-ranchers-won-a-partial-exemption-from-cruelty-laws/

Under the headline “Legislation in the cowboy states,” the May 2012 edition of ANIMAL PEOPLE reported that Arizona Governor Jan Brewer in mid-April endorsed into law a bill by state representative Peggy Judd (R-Wilcox), HB 2780, which exempts dogs used in ranching and herding from anti-cruelty laws. Judd introduced the bill after one of her constituents, a Cochise County rancher, was charged for leaving two dogs in a horse trailer for two days without food or water. Three others were left tied without clean water.

When photos of a dog carrying her 10-day-old puppies to safety surfaced on Reddit Friday, the images elicited warm-and-fuzzy reactions (http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/xzyxf/dog_saves_all_her_puppies_from_a_house_fire_and/) from several users on the site.

A house fire in Temuco, Chile, destroyed the portion of the home where the pups lived, local news agency Soy Temuco reports. (http://www.soychile.cl/Temuco/Sociedad/2012/08/09/111198/Una-perra-salvo-a-sus-cachorros-de-un-incendio-en-Temuco.aspx)

Although the puppies were safely delivered to a fire truck by their mother, homeowner Omar Torres was transported to a local hospital for burn treatments.

Unfortunately, a separate article by the paper reports one of the puppies, named Amparo, died Thursday night due to te severe burns. (http://www.soychile.cl/Temuco/Sociedad/2012/08/10/111241/Uno-de-los-cachorros-de-perra-que-los-salvo-de-un-incendio-en-Temuco-se-encuentra-grave.aspx) The rest of the puppies are in stable condition.

Of course, mother dogs have good instincts when it comes to saving their young.

A recent video from ABC News shows a golden retriever jumping in to a pool (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/09/hero-lifeguard-dog-saves-_n_1412776.html)to save her struggling pup. But when the little one can't pull itself to the surface, the mother climbs out of the pool and brings it to safety.

'Miracle Dog' Missy Rescued From 14,000 Ft. Colorado Peak By Team Of Heroic Strangers

In an amazing feat of both mountaineering and selfless teamwork, a group of hikers, organized via an Internet message site, banded together to rescue a wounded dog (http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/most-popular/dog-rescue-at-14000-feet.html) stranded along an inhospitable stretch of rocky terrain between Mt. Bierstadt and Mt. Evans in Colorado.

Hikers Scott Washburn and his wife Amanda had accidentally wandered a little off course during a hike when they stumbled upon Missy, a German Shepherd mix who was wedged in a crevice off the main trail.

"She wasn’t making any noise. My wife just about stepped on her," Washburn told The Huffington Post. Puzzled, the two had no idea where the dog had come from. "It was just really weird, and definitely not a place for a dog to be," Washburn told HuffPost.

Missy was in very bad shape. Her paws were bleeding, and the good Samaritans could tell she was severely dehydrated. Washburn said her nostrils were plugged shut and she was clearly having trouble breathing.
The two gave the dog food and water, but were not able to transport her back down. Once back on the ground, the two started calling around, trying to find an organization that would help rescue the dog.

In July, the Denver Post reported that more than 20 members of the Summit County Rescue Group helped rescue two dogs (http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_21278178/summit-county-rescue-group-saves-woman-dogs-stranded) who were stranded with one of their owners on Quandary Peak, in Colorado.

But because this emergency situation was without human victims, no agency wanted to take the risk. That's when the two turned to climbing site 14ers.com (http://14ers.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=36893). The Washburns posted a picture of Missy, with a location. On Sunday night a search team tried and failed to find the dog. But on Monday, a second team of eight volunteers, including Washburn and veteran hiker Chris O'Riley, found her.

But then, of course, they had to get the 100-pound animal back down.
The team rigged a makeshift sling to get her off her crevice, and then settled her into a backpack, which members of the team took turns carrying.

Several hours later, as the team continued with the rescue, the weather turned bad, as if often does on peaks of that height.

"It started raining," Washburn said. "Which turned into snow, and by the time we got back to the top of the mountain to start hiking [Missy] out, it was pretty slick and wet and cold and definitely compounded the danger aspect."

Finally back on the ground, the team rushed Missy to a hospital, where the vet proclaimed her a "miracle dog."

Meanwhile, a man claiming to be Missy's owner turned up on the 14ers website.

"At this point I made the decision that I honestly never thought I would even be faced with. I left her there so that my friend and I could get down safely with intentions of calling S & R when we were off of the mountian," wrote someone identifying himself as aortolani14. (http://14ers.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=36893&sid=8f932ee140f3cad2cb53508f74eb8536&start=252) "All I can say is that I am relieved that she is okay, I am ashamed that it was not me that started this thread, I am ashamed that it wasn't me who got her off of the mountain, I underestimated the good will and resolve of the hiking community of Colorado, and I am eternally grateful to all of you," the post continued.

David Crawford works with AnimalHelpNow, a website and mobile phone app that directs people involved with animal emergencies to the appropriate resources. (http://www.ahnow.org/index.php)

Crawford had been helping organize the rescue team, and was monitoring the 14ers site as comments and offers to help rolled in. Crawford told The Huffington Post that emotions were running high among rescuers -- they wondered if the owner had, in fact, exhausted all possible options in his bid to help Missy.

"He says he made calls to try to get hep for her, and nobody would," Crawford told HuffPost. "He could have made those calls, I don’t know. What he didn’t do at that point is get resourceful."

The presumed owner did not respond to an initial request for comment.

For his part, Scott Washburn said he was shocked when the owner came forward to share his side of the story. "I'm a huge animal lover, and the thought that someone would abandon their dog up there is just appalling to me," he said.

For now, Missy is still in the custody of the county, waiting to be cleared by the vet. She is expected to make a full recovery.
Oh, and Fuck that POS owner. He abandoned her to die, he needs to be charged with whatever they can get him with and he sure as shit shouldn't get her back.

Update:
http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_21337462/man-who-left-dog-colorado-mountain-faces-animal

A man who left his dog at the summit of Mount Bierstadt (http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_21314292) will face animal cruelty charges.

Anthony Joseph Ortolani is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 16, according to a Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office media release.

The charge was filed after the sheriff's office completed an investigation into the "abandoned and injured" dog found on Mount Bierstadt, a Colorado fourteener, earlier this month.

The dog is officially named Missy, but rescuers started calling her Lucky. A veterinarian check-up after the rescue showed no permanent injuries, according to the 14ers.com website.

A group of volunteers rescued the dog, a German shepherd, who was spotted wandering at an elevation of about 13,000 feet. She was carried off the mountain on Monday.
Ortolani said on the website that he was forced to leave the dog on the mountain when a storm was moving in and the dog couldn't walk because of blisters. Ortolani had a younger hiker with him and was worried about descending safely.

He thanked the rescuers and begged forgiveness, explaining that he couldn't go back up the mountain to look for the dog because his job took him out of town and officials told him it was too risky to send a crew up to find the dog.

The rescue and the owner's explanations sparked an angry, heated debate on the website over whether Ortolani deserved to get his dog back.

Good on Clear Creek County for going after his worthless ass!

Felony: There should be nothing less of a charge for animal cruelty. Probably more in most cases, though (water-boarding...+).

There are animal LOVERS, and there are mediocre animal owners. He is clearly the latter. While most of the rest of us would go beyond what he did. He said "made some calls" and since it wasn't a human, they wouldn't help. Then sounded like he pretty much gave up. I understand that he had a kid or something with him and had to leave the dog, BUT as soon as he got down to the trailhead, town or wherever, he should've gone into overdrive trying to exhaust all methods. He also didn't even go back to check on the dog? Didn't spread it across the Internet boards? Call the sheriff, local climber/hiking clubs, forestry, wildlife, and a dozen other Colorado agencies?!

That guy gave up, what a lazy douche and coward! I hope he doesn't get the dog back, I'm sure he'll get adopted.

I understand that he had a kid or something with him and had to leave the dog,

Sorry the KID was a young adult (19 years old). Not sure when that became being a Kid but that is a poor ass excuse from various papers to try and justify him leaving the dog the first time. Also the excuse his relatives have mentioned on the 14er's forum.

The issue is not that he LEFT the dog, but he did not bother to seek more help then a few phone calls. Then he expect to get the dog back. Sorry but that is not how tings work.

Dogs equal property in the court system. He abandoned his property, others used resources to recover the abandoned property. Now he wants it back. If the court somehow says he gets the dog back (highly unlikely) then a bill should be presented to him for the rescue ($10,000 - $15,000) would be very responsible for 8 people spending all day and risking their lives. Then the vet should also bill Anthony.

The family also makes me sick for trying to justify Anthony's actions on the 14er's forum. His sister did not go and look for the dog, his employer did not go and look for the dog, other family/friends did not go and look for the dog after he called them. None of them thought to post on the 14er's site or some sort of website asking for help!!! Even if for some strange reason (being into 14er's and hiking 6 previously) he knew nothing about that site (yeah right) one would of thought he would be searching the net for such a site to ask for help.

This guy assumed his property was lost, or did not want to go through the expense to recover it so he thus abandoned it.

I'm waiting to hear if the couple that found the dog has retained legal console. I plan to donate money so Anthony does not get that dog back.

I thought it was a child and a storm was coming. I wasn't really defending him, it's that we don't have real details about that part and why had to leave the dog. Yes, like I mentioned, what happened after is the bullshit.

I was not arguing with you...just trying to correct. All the details are there though...his family made it clear in all their postings at the 14ers forum.

Dog tracks down hospitalized owner more than 2 miles away to pay visit

A New York dog was so affected upset by its owner's hospitalization, it decided to leave home and pay him a visit.
Zander, a 7-year-old husky dog, is believed to have crossed under a busy parkway, and a four-lane road to get to his owner, John Dolan, who was being treated for a skin condition in a hospital two-miles away, MyFoxNY.com reported.
Dolan's wife said when John left for the hospital, the dog was depressed and spent its days crying and sulking.
The couple believes Zander, who they rescued five-years-ago from a shelter and nursed back from starvation, traced Dolan's scent to the hospital.
"I don't know how he got there, I've never taken him there," Dolan's wife told the website.
A hospital employee found the dog on the street outside of Dolan's building.
“It took a few days to sink in really, he was coming to see me,” Dolan told MyFoxNY.com.
A few days later the determined dog tried again, this time it was picked up while on the way there.
"He's my boy, we don't have any children, we have three beautiful dogs, so he's my buddy," Dolan said.
