View Full Version : Looking for a location with the best CO twisties

I'm meeting with a few people from out of state for a riding get-together, and looking for the best places to stay in CO. Will be this summer.

The towns next to the mountains like ft collins, boulder, golden may be nice, but I'm assuming staying in the mountains would be better for it.

Nederland, estes park, idaho springs/blackhawk caught my eye, as well as the towns deeper in the mountains like breck, winter park, keystone, and aspen.

People will be coming from all over the US, so we can pick pretty much any place to stay.

I'm assuming idaho springs/blackhawk would be the best considering their close proximity to Mt. evans, squaw pass and clear creek, as well as 119. Estes park is also very tempting considering trail ridge and st. vrain ave.

I've done very little riding in these areas though, so I can't vouch for them.

Any suggestions? Any towns/cities I haven't thought of? Where would you stay in CO if you had a riding vacation for a couple days?

I would invest in getting a radar detector and mounting it to your bike. The cops (especially Colorado State Patrol) has a major hard on for bikes this year.

There's really nothing in Colorado worth telling your friends about. It's not a great place to ride.

Hwy 550.

C'mon G. Don't steer them wrong.

I-70 east from Denver is a sweet ride. Very scenic!

Look at a map, find the most squiggly lines you can, and ride to them.

I would say Hwy 24 up to NE to be in the same vein as 76 East, but there's so many potholes it might actually scrub up the sides of your tires trying to avoid them...

Yea but then NE PD will pull you over for "swerving too much" or some stupid reason.

post whoring aside - If I had friends, and they came to town, I'd head for Ouray, Durango, and Telluride. The 550 as others have said.

There are twisties everywhere but much less traffic in the southwest.

There is a Motorcycle Roads Rating map available that Nick_Ninja & I (but mostly N_N) assisted ABATE in putting together for CDOT. It's free, straightforward & no-frills. It looks something like this (http://www.coloradodot.info/programs/live-to-ride/documents/2011-campaign-materials/4679_Map_Denver-NWCO.pdf) (this is just 1/4 of the map, the other online samples are available here (http://www.coloradodot.info/programs/live-to-ride/rider-resources.html))

Butler Maps (http://www.butlermaps.com/) has a much more detailed & in-depth motorcycle-specific map available for purchase at many dealers & shops along the front range (check their Dealer Locator for a location near you).

+1 Ouray is not only home to the best road ride (550) it is also the most beautiful town in CO that i have seen so far, granted i have not seen all of Colorado, Ouray is definitely up there.

Post whores, each and every one of you!!

If you want a nice day ride (500 miles) I recommend doing the Black Canyon 500.

It takes you through a nice mix of sweepers and technical sweepers and the scenery is incredible. You have to wait for Indi pass to open up though.

I did a similar ride (Black Canyon 600?) last year. Because of a thunderstorm, I had to bail on going over IP, but it was a great ride nonetheless:

I'd recommend Hwy 92 - take it off of Hwy 50 near the Black Canyon and head up toward Crawford, but turn around before you get there and run it in reverse. I think that's the best/twistiest road in all of CO. Combined with Hwy 50, it's nearly perfect.

Just be sure you don't end up riding 30 miles to a neighborhood complex. FML

From Canon City to Salida or vice versa. Absolutely gorgeous and it's the reason I'm buying a bike again. Such a waste in a cage. Make sure you fill up though because the BP or whatever closes at about 6 or 7 (?) in Cotapaxi(sp). They always looked closed about those times. Can't wait.

It's about 57 miles in between for the lower back problem guys.

Fixed that for you, if you are going towards cortez why the hell would you pass up Mesa Verde natnl park? There is a Toll pass to get to the ancient ruins and its a ton of fun Christi and i spent 4 hours going up and down the mountain.
