Question for all you wireless guru’s out there. My trailer at HPR sits about 100’ from the wireless modem. In the summer of 2010 and 2011 I got good signal (3+ bars) and the speed was good (for DSL). The main thing was that the speed seemed to be the same regardless of the distance from the modem.
This spring when I came back out I noticed that my speeds are fine when the laptop is close to the modem, but PAINFULLY slow when I go to my trailer. As in it makes dial up look like a T1, and I can’t even get any of the speed test sites to work. Signal strength is still 3+ bars. My GF is sitting next to me using the same network and her speeds are fine
The only thing I can think of that has changed is that last fall when I moved from the track into my new place in Aurora, I had to update the driver for my wireless card in order to get it to hook up to the new router at the house. This is the first time since the update that I’ve been back on the wireless at the track, and the speeds are horrible.
Thoughts?

Wireless can be super picky and the driver update might have had an impact, or the radio in your laptop is starting to succumb to age. I literally went through 4 different wifi routers trying to find one that worked after my cheap-ass one crapped out - seriously, these bastards are picky.

Maybe try forcing a different channel on the wifi router. Some radios like different channels, and if you're set to auto-select, her laptop might be better on the current channel. I've had some devices hate a particular channel for whatever reason, but if I force it to 5, for example, everyone is happy.

Next thing might be to try a USB wifi dongle in your laptop and in your girlfriend's and see if there is any noticeable difference.

If it's still slower than Rybo on a sighting lap, maybe it's your laptop needing a defrag, cleanup, etc etc. If it's fast on both, it could just be the built-in wifi radio on your laptop.

In the end, you need to ask yourself just how fast of a connection does one need to watch tranny midget animal porn out there anyway?

Cheers,
Jamie

Is that a rhetorical question?

More of an offer. I've got an extensive collection, just so you don't have to rely on wifi. I got most of it from Snowman - he starred in some, produced others, and pirated the rest.

These are all good suggestions. The most likely cause is the radio in your laptop is not sending a strong enough signal to reach the modem. A new wireless card or driver update are your best bets. You could try messing with power options and other advanced settings on the wireless card but that's generally a long shot.

I'd be happy to take a look next time I'm out if you'd like. I hope to be there Monday.
