In the search for new routes i was wondering what roads you ride to Deckers. I usually take 285 to 126. I'm looking at the map and i see you can also take 96 SW Plate River Rd. how’s that road?

Last year when I rode to Deckers for the first time I rode from Deckers to woodland Park on 67. The road was horrible and had tons of tar snakes, did they repave this road or is it still horrible?

I’m planning on riding from deckers to Sedalia on 67 for the first time and I was wondering is there any other roads you recommend in the area?

Do deckers north to pine junction. Its an amazing road.

If you want to go to Deckers via Sedalia on 67, a set of dirt tires would be nice. It's 11 miles of dirt at the fork in the road where the pavement ends; albeit some of it is packed down. If you take the right hand fork, it's only 3mi of dirt, but one steep-assed hill for a street bike. http://g.co/maps/nnshb

SW Platte River Rd is another nice dirt road. http://g.co/maps/76unz

I've seen a couple of harleys on it... they got lost.
It can be loose and washboarded.

Try this: just a few short dirt/packed gravel segments. Past the Bucksnort Saloon.

Via Woodland Park is really the only way the Dirty Southies (who don't have dirt bikes) get to Deckers...

As far as getting to Sedalia from Deckers, we made that mistake last autumn for the first and only time! Talk about a test of nerves.

Road still covered with tar snakes? I almost slide of the road when I rode it.

I had no problem riding from Sedalia to Deckers on my Harley, on dirt, on purpose. Y'all are a bunch of pansies. ;)

And that's me winking at you.

I ride that dirt all the time, I usually go home that way when I do go on a deckers run. It ain't so bad, I actually like that 3+ miles and can pretty much haul ass up it. The reward is the pavement from Sprucewood 'till you pop out of the hills. Ask Slorider what a Ninja 650r can do up that stretch, I have even passed dirtbikes more than a few times.

Going towards Deckers, taking the right at the fork at Sprucewood, that dirt isn't that bad. The hill is looks more menacing than it is... perfectly manageable in 1st on a sportbike. I think they clean it up once a year or so and it is realllllllly nice when they do.

If I decide to ride down from the 285 side, I'll usually hit some combination of Beer Creek, Parmalee, North Turkey, Deer Creek, and High Grade on the way out. Foxton isn't a bad connector between Pine and 285, but is definitely more sumo oriented with a pretty long stretch of dirt. Good to hit at the end of the day heading up from Deckers and stopping at whatever the name of the backwoods bar is there.

Ooooh. I did that on a dual purpose/sidecar hack once. Would not do it on a sportbike, get a rock in the oil cooler or radiator.

I've done it both up and down on the 929 multiple times. Quit being bitches.

We did the road from Evergreen down through Deckers to Woodland Park today. The road was good; just a few corners with a bit of gravel. Had a great Dunkel at BierWerks on the way home.

Was 67 between Deckers and Woodland Park still full of tar snakes?

Done that 3 mile stretch a bunch of times on the Hyper and Gixxer. Like Bueller said, it ain't bad. And ya from Sprucewood towards Sedalia is defenitly worth it.

Hmmmm, might have to go play up there tomorrow.

Nope, no more tar snakes but it is some kind of crappy surface. I wouldn't lean too hard on it.

Yes, County 97/Foxton Road (I think you meant 97) is a fine alternative between U.S. 285 and Buffalo Creek. Foxton Road is riding terrific, and Jefferson County chip sealed the River Road between Foxton and Buffalo Creek last summer.

Foxton Road towards 285. Further south, near the river, it tightens up nicely...

Can see the chip seal surface here on the River Road. Just enjoy the river ride for about 4.5 miles. Be cool about the speed. A Jeffco Sheriff (who rides btw) lives along the river.

FWIW, when passing by the old townsite of Foxton and the old log post office, look north and up at the blackened slopes. This is where the Lower North Fork Fire flared on March 26th, and the homes it charred were at the top of the ridge...

The South Elk Creek Road, from Pine Grove to Sphinx Park (backwoods bar), to Shaffer's Crossing on 285 is now almost entirely chip seal. Jeffco put new chip seal down last autumn covering the dirt. Except for a mile or two of "dirty" chip seal, it is now pretty nice all the way.

Thanks for the routes/pics Steve. I'm gonna give those roads a shot on Wed afternoon, more than likely. I wasn't aware of the elk creek or foxton road alternates.

Oh really? I had no idea! I haven't been on it since last fall. That is awesome to hear. The stretch from Sphinx up to the pavement just before 285 was a bit much on the sportbike, but the sumo loved it.

I wouldn't describe S. Elk Creek Road as sporting fun, for the chip seal two miles NW of. Sphinx Park isn't the cleanest, but elsewhere it is, and especially so between Pine Grove an d Sphinx Park/The Bucksnort. Nevertheless, I wouldn't hesitate placing a sporting thang on its entire length, if only for the exploration and scenery.

couple of years ago I was on that road and we came around a corner and there lying across the tarmac was a 3ft long snake of some kind. It slithered into the weeds by the time I got stopped and ran back to where it was.

Did that today, as well as Foxton. Very cool roads. Thanks for the suggestion :)

BC... Kinda nice discovering new roads to ride. The Glenelk area you passed through on the S. Elk Creek Rd, with the road narrowing through historical, snugly placed cabins is charming. At dusk, riding through on a summertime evening, the soft glowing cabin lights paint quite a scene. Next time in the vicinity cross under the 285 bridge and continue north on the Elk Creek Rd. It's only a 3-4 mile paved out and back, but it's scenic, and on the north side is the state's newest state park... Staunton State Park opening later this year. All that 285 Shaffer's Crossing construction the past two years for the new state park.

Bucksnort... that's the name of the place I was trying to remember. Great place to stop on a weekend after a couple hours on the bike in the middle of summer. A little overpriced, but considering the scenery on the deck and the good beer, worth every penny.

Good to know.

So if you take the right at the Sprucewood, heading west, is the steep hill up or down going that way?

Lomax

The hill goes down from Sprucewood. It is quite steep but just stay in 1st and use some brakes. Not too bad but beware that is is STEEP.
