Wed May 16th, 2012, 10:07 AM
That's right, we are one of the first to get on the fresh pavement down at Pueblo Motorsports Park. The event will run open lapping for all types of bikes. If you're new to road racing, you will be in good hands with Faasst.

Where: Pueblo Motorsports Park (http://g.co/maps/wxz4q)
When: June 29th 7am-5pm
What: Road course track time
How: Register on www.faasst.com (http://www.faasst.com/products.htm?category=FAASST%20School%20Registrati on)
(Click on "guest open lapping-Bikes" in the online store)
Cost: $120 full day only until June 16th (price will go up after June 16th)
Contact: Reply here, PM me, or call FAASST at 719-761-1372

Requirements: All bikes must be able to pass the bike tech form here (http://www.pueblomotorsportspark.us/DocumentView.aspx?DID=4) (This event is ok for new riders, ignore the experience part.)

Basically make sure your bike doesn't leak, water instead of coolant(MRA rules on water wetters), a helmet, full leathers (2-piece is ok), gloves that go to forearm, boots that cover shin area, and don't walk around in your undies in the pits... Post any questions here, or PM me. If this is your first time on a road course, IT WILL BE OK. There will be a mandatory rider's meeting the morning of the event. We will have most of the corners staffed and the Bambalance will be on site.

The track IS paved, I've seen it myself. Faasst is having a huge car day on June 10th as well so we will try and put some rubber down! Only real concern is some back filling right now. Oh and SHARE THIS THREAD!

Oh damn! This would be a blast! Dont see me being able to make it though, being as I'd have to purchase leathers, gloves, and boots(I need a new trans for the cage.....$1100 :( ).

Take tons of pics! I've been following the repave since it got started last fall. Definitely looks like the track fINALLY got exactly what it needed.

Goes to $140 after deadline.

Should have a great car turnout to "unslick" the track for ya. Wait until you see turn 10. Faasst is working on getting some more lapping days this summer for cars and bikes, but I'm unsure of the details/possiblity just yet. I'll keep everyone posted though.

Gates open at 7am, go hot around 8-9am depending on track conditions, shutting down around 4 depending on when they need to set up for drag racing. Track will be hot all day except for short delays for clean ups and/or session changes. Most riders get tired way before the track day is over. Easily get more than a few hours of track time throughout the day. Judy will send out a schedule to all registered peeps prior to the event.

Got my 1SG to give me the day off! Still have 2 quick questions before I register though:

1. I don't have a racing license or verifiable track experience. I am an AMA Competition member. The FAASST website mentions a requirement for verifiable track experience, is this true here?

2. Do I need a CE rated back protector?

Let me so ASAP so I can sign up please!

The back protector is up to you. I didn't ride with one, but most riders do recommend them. If you don't fall down, you can ride naked.... lol

Ok, so we had a GREAT turnout for our June 10th car day. The track was in great shape with a few minor notes I'll add below to the pictures. I'll admit the surface felt a little slick at first but by around 11AM, you could really see a layer of rubber being put down and it felt like glue. I was only one second slower than the old pavement/turn 10. I wasn't going all out so I have faith the new configuration and pavement will drop everyone's times to record breaking laps. Here's some pics I took:

Front straight- pavement/concrete transition (almost even with the tower now)

Pit on exit ( no more huge bump merging on, but is still narrow)

turn 1 (it's strange to see grass around the track now...)

turn 6's entrance ( smoother transition up top, no more bump)
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/575301_497184253628584_2081388567_n.jpg

Had camera issues until turn 9...but 7 and 8 are great with 8 not having a bump over the entrance road. Turn 9 seen below has a transition from digging a drainage ditch. It's smooth, but is starting to see wear and there are plans for repair. The curbing was lowered and about 1000x's times better than the previous 'ramp.'

exiting turn 9

And the new turn 10- You can see our rubber lines through the turn. The cones did keep everyone from trying to straddle the cement. (they were set up on the inside of the cement) If you turn in to early, it puts you out on the outer edge of the exit that the drag racers do not have rubber on and it is SLICK. It was sticker at the end of the day, but I recommend trying to get upright and follow the left drag lane down the straight for better traction. I was keeping my apex at the corner with a late turn in and it felt smooth without ANY real transistion... on 4 wheels that is... ;)

Hey Brian, we're not offering any discounts for this date. I'm going to harass you a bit because you showed your poker face before I had a chance to say no...lol. We expect to have 60+ riders at the event, so you'll have a great time for sure.

However, we do have a special military date on Sept. 8th just for you guys. Details are at http://www.faasst.com/911.html. We are trying to workout some more dates at the track, so they'll be more chances to get down there this summer. See you out there!

Ok Negative Nancy... If you ride within your skill level, you usually don't crash or aim for walls.

The Military event on Sept 8th, is that both a car and bike event? (Obviously not simultaneously) If so I have some car guys I might be able to persuade to attend...

And for any of you on the fence about it, it's definitely a great cause to sign up for. I was in Iraq with 3rd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division when SGT Craig's tank was hit. (1-8 Infantry is also part of 3rd Brigade, 4th ID). It was my first deployment at the time, and right at the beginning, and this was a big deal for a lot of us at the time. I'll definitely be signing up for this one.

It's an event no car or bike-guy should miss. There will be both car and bike sessions, trading off throughout the day. I really like having the cars there. It adds more interest than just bikes and it's a blast to do ride-alongs in a Porsche GT3 or ZR1 or R8 when you aren't riding. I'm always amazed at how hard some cars can brake and turn.

:wtf: Trying to find the words to adequately express a rational response to that one.

It isn't the "usually don't crash or aim for walls" part that's the problem, it's the "occasionally crash and sometimes slide towards immovable steel objects in the impact zone whether you want to or not, cause physics sucks like that" thing. Nobody tries to hit walls, and nobody wants to crash, but I don't know a single routine racer/trackday rider that hasn't had a mishap of some kind. I've seen many that have hit walls and some that landed on the back protector, so it absolutely can happen.

Of the large number of track crashes I've witnessed and responded to over the years, I can tell you one thing: Armco is bad, tire walls are almost as bad, and riding without a full complement of gear is just fucking stupid regardless of how cocky/self-aware you are about your skills. There is a reason that industry standards for basically every track day org in the country (and generally the planet) include full face helmet, gauntlet gloves, track-style boots, one piece suit or two piece that zips for the whole circumference, and yes, a back protector.

Vince Haskovec was one of the best racers and didn't mean to crash, but he did -- into Armco. He still wound up a paraplegic even with the back plate, without it he'd be dead. He knows more about control of a bike at speed than any individual on this forum and still screwed up. Not trying to be a negative nancy, downer, or pessimist, but telling people that safety gear is optional if they don't ride like idiots is unconscionable in my fairly educated opinion.

To each their own. I'm not riding this weekend, if someone needs to borrow a back plate let me know. I would rather lend it out to someone in need than read about the alternative outcome happening, no matter how small the possibility of it turning out that way.

Yeah, I feel a little strongly on this topic. :) Not trying to bash you Jake, but track safety just isn't something I hold back on...ever. Too much is on the line (pun intended).

At WSBKin Utah I saw a rider crash in the last turn I'd hit the tire wall very hard. He was not seriously injured but he was lucky.

Why aren't you riding Ralph?

Bike blew up at the last round about 40 minutes into the solo 4hr, a sprag from the starter clutch somehow came out and got sucked into the transmission. Steel debris + gears = :( Haven't even had time to split the case yet, I have the parts to repair it but it's just finding the time.

Truck also just required almost $1300 in repairs so that may be my race season at this point.

I do not want anyone to miss their first track day because they don't have one. Use your best judgement, and FYI riding a motorcycle IS DANGEROUS...

Just plain stupid telling people not to miss a track day due to not having the proper safety gear. Nothing more to be said about that.

I would rather loan out a back protector for anyone that doesn't have one. It's not worth the risk going out there without one.....PERIOD.

We goto a track to push it, to get better, all this preaching about taking it to a track, why not be prepared as much as possible for mishaps. A back protector is one of the easiest things to borrow from many people.

If you don't have a back protector, do not hesitate to ask someone to loan one out.

yup. I love this event. I'm happy to pay $100 for a track day, but it's 10x better when the $100 goes to wounded soldiers and I still get to ride the track all day and even get to ride in some very sweet cars.

I forgot that I'll be at Fort Jackson, in SC, for 6 weeks starting in August, gonna have to skip the memorial track day this time. :(.

Anyway, anybody from down south headed this way? I've got a big trailer I can haul several bikes in, and stands, tools etc for on-site repairs, adjustments, tuning, etc. Hit me up.

Also, anybody have a spare CE rated back protector they could spare for any afternoon? I have one, but it's this shiny reflective one more intended as an outer garment/reflective vest with padding and a hard shell, don't think it's CE rated however.

If this is for an HPR track day, I am on the way (denver), just off the highway by 2 miles. Would be easy to meet up with you to loan you mine.

If it's for a day at Pueblo, I am sure we can find someone else closer to you that would make things easier. Just let me know.

I have a medium forcefield you can use too. I'm in the Aurora/Centennial area. It's reusable after a crash so you wouldn't have to worry about damaging it.

Roads are fine and open except for Hwy 24 west. Gates open at 7am, mandatory meeting at 830am at turn 10. You can late register at the gate, cash preferred. Air quality is fine in Fountain. Lot of rumors about the fire and track going around... Just make sure you hear directly from the authorities.
