Hit a raccoon on Santa Fe Dr. South last night with Mdub, Hoot, Ssutton21, AOK303 and Madvlad. We were running about 45-50mph and a granddaddy raccoon runs out from the left. I had very little reaction time and clipped the little bugger over the shoulder. The bike dumped me off the left side and I did some tumbling, bouncing and sliding. I came to rest about 30-40 feet behind where my bike stopped sliding. CSP said they measured the marks from my bike's slide at 210 feet. So I slid a good 50+ yards. Injuries are fairly minor. I feel 10x worse than I really am. Initial impact was on my left shoulder, my whole left arm is one big bruise and I can't lift it more than about 10 inches. My ribs on the left side are bruised pretty good. Both knees are rashed (jeans tore up a little, but held up surprisingly well in my opinion). Icon helmet trashed. Joe Rocket jacket trashed. Gloves and Sidi boots still in great shape. Bike is also in great shape. Big BIG thanks to Madvlad for trucking my bike away from the scene and also to the rest of the group for managing to avoid running my arse over while I was playing human tumbleweed! Photos linked below.

Also, the raccoon didn't make it. :violin:

Damn, sorry to hear, but glad you came out relatively ok! Gear is easily replaced. Could've been so much worse, like hitting a deer up the canyon! Poor raccoon, but hey shit happens.

Did you guys get caught in any rain last night?

Glad you're alright bud. Bike looks like it has more rash than we thought last night but the good part is that you're alive and well. Hoping for a speedy recovery for ya. If ya need anything man let me know.

I think AOK got a good pic of the bugger, he was a biggun.

Glad to hear you and the bike are mostly ok! Safety gear is well worth the money. I have to wonder what made the raccoon so depressed that it committed suicide, though...

Glad to hear you're not more worse for the wear and that the gear did its job. Hope you feel back to normal soon!

Yeah I went in to the ER. I refused XRays but the docs said everything seemed pretty good. They scrubbed up my rash which was pretty quick really, they said it was all superficial and there wasn't any sand or gravel or anything in there. The shower today though hurt like HELL! I scrubbed my knees really good and re-dressed them and now they barely hurt anymore. Ibuprofin is working decent. I refused pain meds because I think they tend to mask alot of the indicators of worse internal injuries and so far so good. Ribs still hurt a good bit as well. But if I can make it a few more days without getting an infection or something, I should be fine in a couple weeks. Meanwhile, time to shop for new gear!

WTF? You killed that poor little defenseless raccoon?

the Racci was still twitching i was told...the skinny cop i hear took the baton to it went Rodney King on it...

Y'know i'm just glad i went to the right lane when we all turn left. We all were about to hit warp speed. Then i saw the commotion...Aok , Hoot doing all they can to avoid Nooch...I rode pass everyone watch Nooch brk dancing then i looked pass him. His bike sliding, spinning, shooting off sparks. I rode next to bike until it stop on shoulder. Got off ..turn bike off. Stood it up. Put it neutral to adjust bike to park . As i watch Nooch and bike...Was like , man this it aint happening...

Definitely not the biggest nor the smallest coon I've ever seen. Definitely big enough to make a night turn bad though!

I remember him looking alot smaller when I saw him for his last 0.27 seconds of life. Probably just that "slow motion" effect from the adrenaline rush of an approaching disaster. Come to think of it, I dont recall much of the actual crash now, except for the sickening feeling of being swept off your bike by 50mph worth of momentum.

Glad you're mostly ok.

A decade ago, I was driving home from work in my pick-up. It was a 65 zone and I was doing 65. I hit and killed three raccoons that were in my lane. I didn't have time to even swerve before we hit. The thing is, a lot of nights I would have been on my bike and probably in triple digits where I hit the coons. That night, I just happened to be in my pick-up. I haven't cared for riding in the dark much since then and I actually sold my bike and didn't ride for a while it scared me so much.

Check with your insurance, new gear might be covered on your policy.

Best of luck.

Glad you're not too banged up. Pain meds like oxycodone are quite beneficial when you go down...esp for the first few nights. It will calm you down, ease the pain and help you to sleep. You'll still know if you have more serious injuries. Why would you refuse x-rays? Like pain meds, x-rays are for your benefit.

I have health insurance, but it just took effect May 1. I havent gotten my card yet and I wasn't fully familiar with what all the pass through costs would be for stuff like that. I decided that if the docs didnt make a big fuss out of my refusal, then I wouldnt worry about it. I refused xrays and the ambulance ride to save a bit of cash. If the docs had insisted, I would have done it. But they said since I had spent the previous hour walking around under my own power and I was breathing fine and not coughing blood, they didnt really feel that xrays were totally necessary.
