View Full Version : PC LAN Party?

Anyone on here have any interest in setting up a LAN party sometime in the near future. I have a friend coming into town for the next two weeks and another 2-6 people could set the stage for an epic night of nerdery. I do have a pretty solid list of rts/fps in mind. A lot of what I have in mind can be gotten for "free".

Anyone?

I haven't done one of those since '03. Might be kinda fun.

What games?

I can type a whole list when I get home but,

Duke nukem 3d
Ut2k4
C&c generals (zero hour)
Other c&c games as well
company of heroes
Hl2 dm
Sins of a solar empire
Starcraft (2?)
Age of empires 2

Lots of possibilities really. I'd prefer games that can be "distributed" among people so people don't have to buy a bunch of games if it's not necessary, although with some games like company of heroes you need to be online now.

I like chicks, let's do a console party since they apparently prefer consoles and the PC LAN party seems entirely sausage-filled... :p

I played half life once... I spent the night running around as a giant tube of tooth paste being continually slaughtered by Ned Flanders, a sniper guy, and Inspector Gadget... it wasn't fun.

I'd be in...if I didn't have to carry a 22" monitor, keyboard, mouse, and full size tower. Never mind that Starcraft: Brood War (my main interest, though SC2 and/or FPS is fun) still won't play on Win7.

So mainly it's the "I'd have to tear apart my computer desk" issue that's gonna keep me out of this. Which is a huge bummer, because I imagine this would be great fun.

We had a naked woman, Kermit the frog, some dude in scuba gear, a robot, and some other weird shit. We would arm everyone with Bow and arrows and play tag, shit was epic.

Not a prob, still have mine. :) Plus, they're easily copied, long before the days of DRM. ;)

This, of course, is ignoring the fact that the game can be downloaded for free from battle.net, so long as you have your CD key. The bonus is that original SC CD Keys will also give you Brood War. I have a copy of the Brood War disc old enough that it didn't have it's own CD Key.

Any thoughts on a location for this shindig?

You may have to use a modified .exe and make sure you have the right DRM settings on your virtual drive. I use Daemon Tools and it seems to work the best.

I never got the multi-screen thing. I assume you have your peripheral screens for your TeamSpeak or whatever else, but you don't game with the actual image broken across all 4 monitors, right?

If so, for a game like CoD or BF3 I think you'd have difficulty with blindspots and the location of the crosshairs...

In all seriousness, why isn't the GPU in the/a loop?

This one is a little old. I have a 1200 Corsair in there now and some other stuff.

Werd, that was my first liquid cooling venture, back when I actually gamed, 9800gtx to start, then a GTX460, ancient! A buddy turned me on to Koolance, but he has his Grfx & memory all plumbed in too, pretty slick. Wish I had time for hours of gaming nowadays like it deserves, heh.

There is a place next to my house called Twin Peaks. Its like hooters, but with better beer and better service. Plus I think there is a bikini week going on right now!!

Nah, it's not for gaming. If I was going for a gaming monitor, I'd pick up a single large screen. A cousin is using a 40" TV for his gaming monitor. It looks excellent though.

Typically it's open folders on the left monitor, cygwin sessions on top, pdfs (documentation) on the right and a web browser on the bottom one. Switch the browser and cygwin sessions when I'm writing code.

When I'm gaming, I'm just using the bottom center monitor, lately for Diablo III. I have a pair of older "Fucking Piece of Shit"(tm) ATI 4870 video cards so don't have the monitor spanning capability.

Since I've mounted the monitors via wall mounts on a plywood backing board, it's a pain to just pull out one monitor to schlep to someone else's house (along with the keyboard, mouse, system, and backpack with additional gear).

I know the ATI drivers at least for the 4870's are crap. Unfortunately, I'm going to be a little light in discretionary funds for the next year or so :) so no new hardware for the computer.

The 570 is a solid card without breaking the bank.

Strongly recommend eVGA.

What would you recommend between the two I listed above? GTX560ti w/ 448cores, or is the gtx570 worth the extra $50? Doesn't seem like most people would notice the diff., even at all maxed settings at 1900rez. Or if you had < $250, what would you get today?

Not that complicated anymore... There's a single online installed available now, I can link it if you want. You need a Battle.net account to access the page with the link, but once you have it it works for anybody. Once installed, no CD required. If you don't have a legit key, just use a keygen.

Also, if you still have the CD installer and want to go that route, just copy the files into a folder on your desktop and install from them, then patch the game to at least 1.12 iirc. Then, copy the big MPQ file from the install folder to the game folder and run the game from the shortcut created during the install. This is actually a Blizzard supported feature (no key) and no cracked .exe's or anything.

I'm an idiot, the whole time I was talking about the original StarCraft. If you have a StarCraft 2 account, (which you need to play anyway) just go to Battle.net, log in to your account and download it. If not, same thing, let me know and I'll send you the downloader.
