Badminton is a really fun backyard bbq activity when you don't have room for volleyball.

I can understand the player's perspective. They've all made it to the next round already. If they lose the current match, they get a better seeding in the overall bracket. I think the fault here is actually the tournament format. Nobody should want to lose, so that they have a better chance of winning overall.

Maybe the Olympics should adopt a "one and done" philosophy with losses...

I think the prospect of being shamed on the world stage and DQ'd from the rest of the event as a whole will make them not want to lose. I'm pretty sure they don't have better seeding for the next round now!

That's for sure! I can't say I'd do what they did if I was in their position. I can't imagine anyone feeling good about throwing a match.

I agree, there is definitely some fault by those who defined the tournament structure. If anything, the round robin approach is just as much of a scam on the part of the organizers. It's only real purposes is to add games to prolong the event so they can pocket extra revenue from additional days of ticket sales. That's not much in the competitive spirit either.

As another badminton player had stated, if they really wanted to make it about competition, it would've been a knockout style tournament. I guess this was the first time they did the round-robin format, and I'm assuming it will be the last.

Looks like there's some fault on both sides of this coin.

+1, agreed. Way more relaxed than regular tennis.

I classify it as a "competitive sport" down there with curling, speed walking, Nathan's hotdog eating contest, and other retard events, jmo.

(although I do love a good Nathan's or Hebrew National occasionally)
