Guys

Need help here. I want a Bike for Trail Riding. I have no Interest in motocross or doing jump tracks and such.

I'm trying to understand what I should by. Ive been told to stick with 4 stroke, but now I'm Stuck. Is a plated dirt bike worth the extra grand or so they go for? Or should I just buy a OHV bike? Please educate me on where I can ride OHV and such.. I'm a newb on this and I'm confused.

PS any one wanna loan me a bike or two =)

Plated just means you can connect up OHV trails using regular county roads (dirt or paved). Very convenient in CO with miles of trails not all interconnecting.

As for 2 stroke vs 4... personal preference. 4's aren't so rev dependent to stay in the power band.

Its it worth the Extra G for a bike though?

Id let you test the DRZ but i think its a bit heavy for trail riding.

OHV- Off-Highway Vehicle (not for street use)
http://www.parks.state.co.us/OHVsandSnowmobiles/OHVProgram/OHVRegistrations/Pages/OHVRegistrations.aspx

Plated- Just like a car, it can go anywhere, including trails.

You can either buy one plated (it shouldn't be a grand more) or get the accessories and plate it yourself. Here's a good thread on plating a dirtbike. Link (http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=743799) As I stated earlier, I would suggest a 4 stroke, especially if it's being used as an on-road bike. 2 strokes are good if it's just a woods/off-road bike. (opinion)

Look for bikes that are not made for motocross. To my understanding, the power is going to be different, as well as the gear ratio on a MX. If you are looking in the 250 range:

Honda CRF250X
Kawi KLX250
Suzuki DR-Z 250/400
Yamaha WR250
KTM 250 EXC

I'd say it is. Having had MX and Trail bikes, it's a PITA to connect all the trails in CO without either going where you need a plate (on transition roads) or else being limited to just looping the trails you're currently on all day and/or trailering everything there and back.

Fwiw, my next dirt bike will be plated, and most likely a KTM 500 EXC, that way I can ride TO the places I want to ride, ride across the various transition roads where I need plates and insurance, and then ride home--all without any hassles...

If you buy a bike that already has a headlight and tail light, it's not going to cost a grand to get it plated after you do the mods listed in the link that Sean posted. I think it cost me around $200 to do my WR450.

DRZ's are some of the best dirt bikes made, relatively cheap and bullet proof with a few mods. They are not racing type bikes and they don't jump particularly well but when running right they will damn near climb trees.

Nothing against the DRZ as I've still never ridden one, but for a plated "enduro" that can do everything (including SuMo) I still think the KTM 500 EXC is "the" perfect "all-around" dirt bike as it can do basically everything--think it can't jump? watch:

Oh and I will never own another unplated bike, whether it comes titled or I have to go through the PIA process. Next year I hear they will be enforcing the OHV registration on all bikes including plated on Forest Service land.

I think a KTM 500 EXC would be a little much for a guy beginning on the dirt. IMHO I've ridden a friends 525, and I thought it was a freaking handful off-road!

I dunno, I been riding dirt most of my life since early childhood, and almost always on a 250 (2 stroke back in the day, later a CRF250R), but after riding my buddy's 500EXC, I'm totally in love with that bike--and I think it's as tame as you want it to be, yet has more torque than a 250 and for the money, it's not that much (comparatively).

A new Honda CRF450X costs $8440, isn't sold as street-legal, and isn't as good of a bike...

OP isn't looking for which bike to buy, and if he were I can bet he isn't looking to spend that kind of money for a first dirtbike.
He is asking about the advantage of title vs. OHV reg.

On topic -

When I lived in Wisconsin I bought a brand new tricked out with every possible farkle, Yamaha Grizzly 660. Riding in the mid-west kicked ass.

Moved to CO and fought the OHV trail system on the front range for two years.

Then lost my ass when I finally gave up and traded it on a plated dirt bike.

FUCK Colorado and their OHV trail system!

Plated definitely. As for whether it's worth $1K, that's for you to decide compared to getting an unplated one and doing what needs to be done to make it street legal.

Not just bikes but plated 4x4's. I went around and around on this for my Jeep as to whether or not I needed a sticker and the answer was a firm yes. Just a heads up to anyone who 'wheels here in CO. I didn't mind the $25 for the sticker / registration, but lack of clear and definitive information was so frustrating.

Not to mention that no states seem to carry any reciprocity with other states any longer either. Most states would usually give you a two week grace period to vacation and enjoy their trails provided you were legal in your home state.

But now if you want to use the trail system in another state, they are forcing everyone to have that state's sticker. How the state can force you to have a sticker to use FEDERAL land and have it hold up in court is beyond me. I was told it was challenged somewhere and upheld but I have no supporting information.

I'll sell my 2001 KTM EXC 300 for that, but it is a 2 stroke.
It is titled, and has near new tires but does need fork seals.
My wrist surgery is not recovered enough for trail riding this year.

Since everyone seems to be on board the plated wagon, I'm gonna chime in for the very small "not plated" crowd.
I've been riding trail bikes for almost 20 years. I've done the "bikes in the back of the truck" routine for many years, and the "trailer behind the suv" for many years, which is my current setup. I always have a current OHV sticker, and wouldn't have it any other way. Whether it's a day ride above Central City, or a camp trip to Moab, it's nice having room to bring whatever you want and have an easy, comfortable drive home.

As for bikes...my current one is a 2004 Kawi KLX300R-4-stroke. Light, not too tall, great suspension, comfy seat, good power, very reliable, and many years in production, with no mechanical changes (1997-2007).

LOL.. I suppose I will get bored of it someday, but not yet. It's small enough to play on the trails and the six speed is actually usable on pavement. Slower than the WR250s though.

KLX?

 Go side it and see. It may be a little lacking at higher speeds, but will be more forgiving on the dirt.

to ride OHV trails all you need is an OHV sticker available at any mc shop that sells dirt bikes. if you want to make a bike titled and street bike i would recommend buying an untitled bike put on DOT approved tires, a horn, working brakelight(most trail bikes come with a tail light that always stay on, all you need is a switch that makes it brighter when you apply the rear brake) and a horn. you dont need turn signals but if they are on your bike they must work. at that point youll need to call your local CSP station and schedule an inspection. they will give you the paper work you need to take to the DMV to title your bike and get plates. with good tires, those mods will run you about 400 bucks. depending on your skill, you should be able to install everything yourself. i believe youll need a stronger stater to run a horn but im not sure.

you just have to respect the power of the dirty on the trails and youll be fine. i would also reccomend you find a four stroke for trails because of their fuel economy

Could be, I knew it was legal since the Aurora PD/DART team bikes they bought had 'em, but that was a few years ago now...

I can confirm that this is no longer enough, the rules have been changed requiring an electric horn.

:dunno: I backed off when the steering got kind of light. Fast enough for the trails anyway.

that would work. battery powered im assuming?

and if your looking for a great beginner bike an xr 400 would do you solid man. plenty of power, forgiving suspesion and BULLETPROOF motors, all around perfect trail bike. i had an 01 with nothing modified expept a rear cargo rack, full fmf exhaust and a k&n air filter and it ran KICKASS.

Yep 9v.. I'm not sure a 400 would suit me.. I'm not a heavy guy 145 lbs but 6foot 3

CC's in different bikes are not all equal. XR400 is almost the same as a DRZ400 which is not a powerful bike at all, probably around mid 30 for HP. 450 YZF or CRF are pushing 50 HP.

XR probably a good choice for a noob trail rider as they are air-cooled, so no radiators to bust/replace. I vote for plated.

About the same, would be a good choice if you can stomach green.
If you look at it see if the exhaust has a spark arrestor and check the right radiator, might be bent.

grab a stick and poke inside the can. if it only goes in like 3 to 6 inches it has one. if the stick goes all the way in, it does not.

Ok I was on the phone with the OHV dept and am confused as ever. I was told you need an OHV sticker on ANYTHING you take onto trails, plated or not. OK I get that; a fee for use system. So what constitutes a trail? Unmarked singletrack or anything with a brown sign? Are CR## numbered roads trails? FS## numbered roads? And if I don't have a sticker on my truck, I can only get as far as the trailhead?

BTW the lady also told me to get the blue, non-resident sticker.

A rock solid bike would be a KDX200 I'm looking at that as a possible addition. I would say my XR650R but its a big bike although more then capable of doing shit.

Yep, if say you are running single track or Quad trails you need a OHV sticker even on a plated bikes. I now also sport the sticker its only $25.25 so not a huge deal. One USFS Ranger I talked with said the plain is to even patrol Jeep Trails in 5 years as everyone will need a sticker...he rolled his eyes and said it never be enforceable as for one they are a 9-5 organization and trying to explain to Grandpa from KS how they are suppose to have a sticker is going to be pointless.

I think how the Forest service should handle this is that the rangers should have stickers. Maybe charge you an extra $10 for hassle fee and watch you apply it to the vehicle in question.

Anyways YES, you need a OHV sticker.

Well, with 2 bikes AND the truck it adds up.

I've argued that point what about people with many motorcycles for themselves. The response is typically "if you can afford multiple motorcycles then you can afford to OHV sticker them all". I then point out a lot of people don't have multiple $10,000 bikes but multiple $1,000 used ones. Only response is "oh". Again for most they see it as YOUR WEALTHY SO YOU CAN PAY THE EXTRA MONEY...which is total BS.

I think how it should be done is like the National Park Pass. a nice hard plastic credit card sizes pass you keep on your person and is good for YOU so if you own 1 or 10 bikes your good to go. Maybe have that option as a more expensive option but then less hassle to try and remember to sticker all your bikes.

I think up to a certain size/age there should be no OHV stickers because you want new people to join in on the sport.

All my dirt miles and I have ran across 2 Rangers who both were in their vehicle and just looked to see if I was plated. I have yet to run across a ranger out in 717, Rainbow Falls or any other area.

There's plated DRZ400Es, XR400s and KDX200/220s out there for only a couple hundred over a non plated one. Get one of those if it's your first trail bike. I've ridden heavy pig 4strokes and Motocross 2 strokes and I prefer the 2 stroke but they're harder to ride than a "trail bike". Here in CO they make it pretty easy to convert any Dirtbike, but it'll probably cost you more to do that than buy one that's already plated.
