I'm still pretty new to Colorado and don't know what species of snakes you have out here yet. This guy was outside my apartment and I was just wondering what he is. No Rattle on the end of it and was very non-aggressive.

Looks like a bull snake to me. Nothing to worry about.

All of the venomous snakes in Colorado are rattlers. I've lived here all my life and have seen 3 in person. You'll know if you come in contact with one, they make themselves known, in my experience. I've never seen one inside city limits, and all three were out west.

Interesting you ask about this today. I came across this little SOB this afternoon. My daughter almost stepped on it. This was one of two rattlers we saw today. This one is about 18 inches, the second one, (not pictured) was probably about 2 feet.

28 years here and I've only seen 1 when I was up at the Colorado / Wyoming border playing in an airsoft mil-sim campaign... I was making a mad dash for a highpoint to snipe from and got about 10 feet from what looked like a good 4'er that didn't like me spot I picked... needless to say I relocated :)

Of course that was an amazing 72 hour "field trip" --- turned out to also be the only time in 28 years I've ever seen a mountain lion - fortunately on the other side of the property fence line about 75 yards off. Not that my meager little airsoft guns on my person would have done anything to dissuade said kitty cat if he had wanted to make me a meal I think... even at 550fps I don't think he'd have been phased in the slightest.

Fortunately I think there was just too much activity in the area to make me, or anyone, an "easy pick".

Mean looking. The head on that thing is unreal. She's a badass...and she knows it.

Agree, it's a bull snake. When in dry grass, their tail can sound like a rattler.

I think I just saw that at the Wildlife Experience today. Hognose snake? Maybe?
