Haven't seen anything posted here about it. Dude is about to take a helium ballon up 120,000 ft to the edge of space where he will then jump. His ballon is scheduled to launch around 11am due to delay. The ascent will take almost 3 hours.

His main issue it at that altitude there isn't enough atmosphere to steer his body. If he falls and begins to rotate ha can't do nothing about it.

They didn't put any sort of propulsion pack on him to help push him into the atmosphere if he goes too high? He's not in orbit, once he steps off the platform he is going to fall straight down. Also because he's max speed will be about 650 mph, there will be no re entry heating.

Still with one screw up with the suit, his blood would boil in seconds.

Yep, they need calm (<3mph) wind from the surface up to 700 feet. With today's attempt it twisted the balloon too much and they aren't sure it's actually structurally sound for manned flight. 3mph is really almost nothing, and when the velocity is that low it's also common to have the direction be highly variable. Trying to put up a 700' tall, super-thin balloon with that as a requirement has to be incredibly stressful.

Any pilot can tell you the chances of uniform, calm wind from the surface to that altitude are extremely small. I've seen it maybe once, though we tend to have very mixed air here because of the terrain. It really does require a perfect mix of meteorological factors.

ROSWELL, N.M. - The weekend weather in New Mexico appears to be cooperating this time for a daredevil trying to become the first skydiver to break the sound barrier.

Meteorologist Don Day says the weather forecast is still favorable for the jump, scheduled for early Sunday near Roswell, N.M.

Former Austrian paratrooper Felix Baumgartner will be prepared at sunrise to launch his 30 million cubic foot helium balloon to hoist a 3,000-pound capsule that will carry the jumper 23 miles up in the sky.

The jump has already been canceled twice due to high winds.

Baumgartner will try to break a 1960 high-altitude parachuting record. He will also test a pressurized suit that is designed for stratospheric jumps.

Tue Oct 16th, 2012, 08:15 AM
:headbang:

That was their only mistake. Except for the fact he pulled the chute 10 seconds too fast and did not break the current elapsed time free fall.....

Baumgartner has achieved a 4 minute and 22 second freefall, which does not break Kittinger’s record for elapsed time of a free fall, although Baumgartner has broken the record for the highest manned balloon jump. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/innovations/post/felix-baumgartner-tries-record-breaking-jump-again-live-blog/2012/10/14/b7ddfc18-159d-11e2-be82-c3411b7680a9_blog.html

Although not saying this was not amazing; especially breaking the sound barrier!

Snowman
Tue Oct 16th, 2012, 08:38 AM
It would be interesting to see the reason he didn't wait to pull for another 10 seconds.

They did say he was about 5000ft above the ground when he did pull. After moving at 830mph+ I'm wondering if he wasn't slowing to terminal velocity fast enough as the ground was coming up. That was allot of velocity to aerobrake out of.

rybo
Tue Oct 16th, 2012, 08:57 AM
I read in early press about this effort that Felix is highly claustrophobic and trained for nearly a year to get used to the close confines of the suit and capsule. I can only imagine that the faceshield fogging up makes that experience worse.

The guy is amazing. A spin like that in freefall is incredibly difficult to control.
