So unfortunately I have fallen victim to the typical scenario of "I no longer have enough time to ride to justify the expense of the sport" so I am preparing to offload my Yamaha. I called Progressive today to cancel my insurance since I never ride anymore and the guy tells me that I need to be careful that I don't get into trouble with the DMV by selling a bike without insurance. I have never heard of this. The guy went ahead and cancelled it anyway before confirming after he had just told me this so I figured he was just being sketchy. Any thoughts on wtf he was talking about?

Could be if someone steals the bike, or someone test rides it and crashes it and sue's you..I dont think he was being out of line.

I would keep some type of coverage until you sell it just to cover your end and just in case something does happen

Don't ride it, you sign the back of the registration saying you will maintain liability insurance minimum. As soon as it sells it is the buyers responsibility.

Not a bad idea to keep it insured until it sells. BTW if you wanna see if we can squeeze it in my garage let me know.

+1 for Progressive. I called them back and they reversed the cancellation. First guy I talked to sounded like he was running on half a cylinder. Disaster averted.

Jmetz, I'll hit you up after the supposed snow this week. If you could hook that up, that would be most excellent.

That's what we're using it for. We have 3 bikes so far, 2 more possibly if ticktock decides to use it for his racebikes but there's plenty of room given there's nothing else in there but for my small toolbox and small boxes.

I live really close to Aurora, could store your bike through the winter if needed. Off chambers and I-70.

I work for an insurance carrier. You can sell a bike without having insurance. But for sure if something happens before it sells or you ride it and crash, or if it is stolen then you will be screwed. Best to keep the insurance until right after it sells then cancel immediately after it sells. So you're covered until the end.
