Sex and alcohol make you happier than kids and religion, study finds

Kids are said to fill our lives with poignancy and inexplicable joy, yet it appears many parents would rather be tossing back some bourbon and rolling around in their skivvies than taking care of their beloved offspring. A new study by Carsten Grimm from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand has found people rate sex as the top activity that brings them happiness, followed by drinking alcohol or "partying." Caring for kids (yawn) fell down the list at number five. God also got the cold shoulder, with people rating meditating and religion at number four.

They really needed to do a study to determine this?

Wow, sad. All I hear from my close friends who are recent or younger parents, is how their entire lives have changed meaning (for the better) completely after the birth of their first-borns.

Yeah but what kind of parent would really say "worst thing ever was to have kids and wish I never had little Bobby." That would really mess up a kid, so I do wonder if that is just something a parent has to say..... :dunno:

Wow, someone got funded for studying this? All you have to do is look at the exasperated faces of frazzled parents at Chuck E Cheese's on a weekend. As they find religion: Oh my god Timmy! Get off that table!! :D

Wow you really have vengeance for alcohol. Lol.

I dont know of many parents that choose anything over their kids. Sure some people neglect their kids and it MIGHT be because of the alcohol or it MIGHT be because they are shitty parents/people.

Im curious here. Whats with all the hate to drinking? Plenty of people go out have a drink or two with dinner amd enjoy their night. Tons of people exercise responsibility when going to a bar on the weekend. How many of those people are out there? All these studies you keep posting are route of all evil is alcohol but what about the countless others that maintain responsible reasoning while drinking?

Back when i did towing for randys we did all the cspd impounds. I can tell you that only a few drunk calls would come in on any given weekend night. With all the partying that takes place on the weekends in the springs thats a fairly low level of issues.

Actually one of the worst accidents i ever worked alcohol was not involved. Weed was. Two kids decided to open it and tagged a husband and wife as they turned into thwir neighborhood. The kids were going over 100 and hit the other car so hard it ripped in half killing the wife. Both kids survived. Nothing but ruined lives? Do i blame weed for their actions? Nope. I blame the kids.

Maybe we as a human race need to grow up as a whole and accept responsibility for our actions. People dont get drunk and start shit because of the amount they drink. They are asshiles to begin with and made the choice to drink.

I hate the idea that addiction is a sickness. Thats bullshit. Maybe if people just said hey im an asshole maybe a shouldnt get shit faced drunk/high we wouldnt have that many issues. That would be a start to a perfect world but for some reason we need things to blame besides ourselves. No mommy said i was a good person so it must have been the alcohol that made me be a dick. Lol

I'd take a nice cold beer over babysitting; reason I am 34 with no kids. Not by accident, but on purpose and always take precautions against a unplanned pregnancy.

I just posted the story because I saw it and nothing was going happening on the board. People don't make topics and site is pointless.

If anything I come off as hating things because I like to be educated on it. So when I post the bad studies on alcohol it is more so people can be aware of it and not think because this or that is legal or illegal that it is somehow ok to abuse. I've bashed Tylenol on the site many times too, but I will still use it, but I find it funny that people don't realize how many die from it annually.

Guess i never looked at life like that. Not sure how one could make it to adulthood without hearing how bad alcohol could be for you. If i limited my life to things that didnt risk my health it would be a very very dull life.

If i limited my life to things that didnt risk my health it would be a very very dull life. Well I always knew it was bad, but not until I dated a ICU nurse did I really get to know how bad it is. She swears detox from alcohol is worse than any other drug. Like I never knew people have seizures, halucinate, and can die from alochol withdrawl. I always thought that was herion withdrawl, but she claims it is worse than that. Then I always thought to get cirrhosis that it took many years of hard drinking, but that is not the case either.

Then we can take cigarettes. They are sold on every street corner yet we know it kills you and causes cancer. Yet people seem to think it is ok because it is legal.

And see thats nothing new to me. Growing up in nv i seen my friends get neglected because the parents had horrible gambling problems. Life is not sparkling rainbows. I have a friend that i know for a fact will die due to his drinking but with being on the streets at the age 15 it coukd be worse.

I dont agree with your idea about cigarettes either. Its very well known that smoking is addictive and horrible for your health. How commercials a day run about it? Even on the box itself. There is a difference in enjoying something and thinking it was good for you. Honestly we all die someday what truly matters is the life we live that matters. We have a short time to enjoy this journey and wasting it on fear sounds like the true crime.

I love enjoying simple things and hate thinking about the end. If its going to happen it will happen.

For those who don't know, when you have a kid everything changes, you can't just go do something on a whim, you are responsible not only for your life but another's, and it can tear relationships apart.

Wow I guess there's that way, (which is pretty bleak) having sex doesn't mean you'll get HIV and die. I know plenty people who don't have kids drink occasionally, I'm sure there intimate and are 10x happier than the people I know with kids.

You aren't getting the point, the point of the OP is that the alternative is better than other. So because someone decides not to have kids or practice religion they are a tool? Religion was made complicated by the people because it is nothing like the way it was and its so judgmental, kids require you to be selfless and some people choose to be responsible for themselves and not another human.

A few things about alcohol.

First, the worst accident I've ever seen was caused by a drunk driver. And it was far worse than the one townie mentioned.

As soon as the sun goes down, 98% of car accidents are caused by drunk drivers, and half are hit and runs. The other half aren't because they can't run, otherwise they would have.

If there were no drugs or alcohol, I wouldn't have a job. I'd say both contribute equally to my job security, but in very different ways. I will say this though, it has been a long, long time since I've seen someone arrested while sober. And when I did see that, it was for a warrant for an offense committed while drunk. Quite simply, every call the police run on at night involves at least one person being drunk or high. And most of the time, it's more than just one person.

Just take one look at the Octomom and you will understand. I agree...moderation is the key!!!! And I do agree with kids in moderation too. I worked for Medicaid way to long and saw people with too many kids than they couldn't afford, yet they kept having more. Sometimes I do wish that having kids was based on your income (and IQ, but different subject). If you can afford 6 kids without government help, then all is good. If you have 6 kids and you are on welfare and Medicaid you should be cut off from more kids....

Many will argue you can't tell people how many kids they should have. My response to that is F%$K YOU!!! If I am paying for your kids because you can't, then I absolutely can tell you how many kids to have.

If you are too dumb to understand a lifetime supply of condoms is far cheaper than raising 1 child, then you shouldn't be allowed to reproduce.

Oh yeah for sure, but I agree with you if it is my tax dollars being used to raise these kids! Being a manager at Medicaid years ago I saw that this was a issue and brought up how we needed to spend more time on education of preventative measures like condoms and birth control. Found out that is a huge "no, no" as it interferes with people's religious beliefs. Too bad their religious beliefs didn't include not taking money from Medicaid and Welfare for their 8th kid so they could see how hard it really is

I am currently working on a project on a reservation in South Dakota building housing for the locals (aka a prison). The county I am in is the 3rd poorest county in the US, over half the population lives below the federal poverty line, yet a lot of people have not just one kid, but multiple. One of the laborers we hired had his 8th kid recently. His wife was in labor for 27 minutes, they damn near fall out now. Everyone with a social security # born on the reservation gets a monthly check from the government, so kids really do become pay checks up here. This place is a prime example of how just handing people money does nothing for them, it only teaches them to be dependents.

I grew up in New Mexico so knew people that lived on the reservation. Now talk about a plan that is not working that is one! We are giving them free housing and those free monthly checks plus they don't have to follow a lot of the federal laws (like DUI's if caught on reservation). It has caused a lot of Native Americans to sit at home all day since they have really no bills and get drunk or do drugs. Like you said they have more kids so they can get more paychecks; and they know this! So now we see that they have become dependent on this federal help and decide to not really have the ambition to better themselves and have become a very poor society. Also I do believe that alcohol effects native Americans in a different way than most races; every native American I knew that drank, drank to get piss drunk and not for socially. I had a few Native American friends of their family members die or cirrhosis at a early age.

Of course this is not all reservations, but the majority I have seen.

There is no such thing as social drinking up here. In the few months i have been here, I have encountered a girl in her early 20s so drunk at 6am that she drove into the ditch while making a left turn. The worst was a drunk that crossed the center line on a 2 lane highway in a 55mph zone sideswipping an on coming car, but never stopping, he just kept on going like nothing happened.

If you are bored, Google White Clay, NE to read about the town where all the liquor is bought because alcohol is banned on the res.

Lol 98%????? You work for the dui team? Because that would be the only way 98% of your accidents are duis.

I brought up one. I have seen worse as well but i wont play the bigger dick game with a cop. Just remember law enforcement only investigates them... guys like me clean them up.

I wont lie and say drugs and alcohol arent factors in our societies but really if it wasnt those it would be something else. We would still have crime. We would still have accidents. Also btw the number one cause of accidents isnt alcohol or drug related. Its not paying attention. Just if anyone wants to get facts straight.

And also who says because i dont go to church and dont have kids im off partying like a rock star every day? Thats just fucking dumb! Do i get to have a little more fun then a family man? Wow, I actually agree with Townie on this.

Just because people don’t have kids and like sex and alcohol does not mean we go crazy and party all the time. Actually I know a lot of family men that party more than I do. I don’t agree with it, as when you have kids you have to think about a lot more than yourself, but it happens a lot. Basically having kids does not make you mature. In my opinion it is more mature to wait till you are financially and emotionally ready for kids and done with the partying lifestyle (not saying you can't have a occasional "guy night out"). Sad that so many parents continue as if kids are a side gigs or leave it on their wives as they go out and party. I don’t have kids but when I do my spare time will be with them. Honestly I don’t get how people in their 30’s still want to go out partying with friends all the time; shit was cool to me in my twenties, but not now. I hate waking up feeling like shit, spending $100 at a bar, hanging around drunk people in their twenties, or just the drama that goes along with it. Damn, I am getting old :D
