Any word on a date yet? It's been too cold for my vagina to ride lately, but in the off chance that theres a warm day, I want to have an idea of what date it might be. maybe the stars will align for a good free day

From the HPR website:

The actual days will be determined based on the weather forecast, we will pick the two days that seem likely to have the best weather, and we will announce them on the hotline and our facebook page on the afternoon of Christmas Day. We hope you can join us!

Unfortunately the forecasts are not looking good. Checking Byers on Weather Underground show snow on Christmas eve and Christmas with no temps above freezing until the 30th. The 30th is 34/9 and the 31st is 36/16

The lake at Georgetown is usable by permit only, and they don't allow bikes. Ice racing in Colorado is at Rainbow Falls...

On a side note, I've played on these extensively on icy roads...it's a serious hoot...70+ on ice.

I do think a 1:50 is possible but I would have to take riding and racing a lot more serious then I have the past couple of years.

Tire warmers won't do shit at these pavement temps. by the time you roll out to the track the tires will be cold.

The real problem is friction. Although asphalt/concrete has a higher friction coefficent when colder (not icy), rubber is the extreme opposite. Rubber acts more like plastic the colder it gets. The softer the compound the more pronounced it becomes as well. Thus why some street tires are better (for durability) on cold days than some race tires. Like bueller says, warmers won't do too much for you after the first lap. Talk to your tire vendor to help with your cold riding needs.

Appreciate on appreciatas

How do you think the PR3s would do opposed to the Bridgestone battle axes at 35 degrees?

I'm thinking about car tires but it should be the same principal. Why are snow tires made of softer compound? Those grip better at near freezing than harder compound all season tires?

Race tires come in around 175*F IIRC. That is where they have the best grip and that is where they are soft. Cold race tires are like rocks when they are cold.

This is one of the big reasons race takeoffs don't make good street tires if you don't know what to expect out of them. They really never come up to temp on normal street riding and don't have good grip.

Unfortunately, I don't have much experience with those specific models. You might want to ask the vendors (or dealers) for those tires. Sorry!

Right. Plus snow tires aren't designed (mostly) to be ran on the asphalt. They were made to run on snow. So the softer rubber allows the tires to gain traction by mechanical grip and not so much by surface friction. Take those same puppies around some laps on an asphalt track and watch them disappear in front of your eyes. :(
