So I checked into it, and synth is $10/quart, which is whack.

What are you characters using? I hear some folks are using automotive oils with no problems, as long as there's no friction modifiers.

I use Mobil 1 Racing 4t full synth. costs about 10 bucks a qt from amazon.. at least I don't have to pay tax or shipping

Look at what the big-box auto stores sell - most sell motorcycle oil much cheaper than Fay / Performance.

I buy Valvoline motorcycle oil from Advance Auto. I got it for $4/quart last year but it wasn't on sale this year. It is still good oil.

Advanced did have a sign up that said all Mobil 1 synthetic was 5 quarts, with a filter, for $35. They wouldn't honor it for the motorcycle oil, though, the bastards!

I usually get the Mobile or Valvoline 4T at Walmart I think its 8 bucks a qt, my bike only needs three qt so under $30 for oil I dont think is to bad they are both synthetic motorcyle oils.

Try a search on here using "full synthetic", quite a few threads come up regarding oil. Last year when I priced Mobil 1, IIRC, it was about $10/qt at O'Reilly's. I thought about it and I decided to stick with Amsoil full synthetic when I did my oil change last month since I can get a good deal on it. Also, I believe there is some chick on Craigslist who is an Amsoil rep who sells it for like $10/quart - that's if you can get in touch with her.

Yup I did a write up of all the information I found on this and it is somewhere on the site.

Basically only auto oil I found that is safe to use is Rotella (really diesel engine oil)! Mobile 1 (red cap) use to be ok, but they changed the formula and it now has those dreaded friction modifiers that will tear apart our bikes.

I went with Mobile 1 4t finally that I bought at O'Reiley.

That is what I use too. Autozone had a good deal on it last month for 4 quarts and a motorcycle filter for $34. Best price I have seen on full syn for bikes.

I've been using royal purple 15/40 (non energy conserving) in my r1 and my fz1 before that. Got about 4000 miles since the last change and the oil is still pretty clean in the sight glass.

This year I'm using Rotella T6 in the racebike. It's diesel oil, it has all the right stuff in it and it's very reasonably priced.

Another can of worms I know, but what is everyone using for filters?

Ive heard it does not matter, they are all about the same on the inside. Just change them out every other oil change. For the K&N filter, you are paying $8 more for just that nut on the end.

I was reading an article about a reusable stainless steel filter which looked pretty interesting. A bit steep up front, but then you don't need to buy another one for a long time.

I avoid Fram and buy my filters at NAPA.

I used fram this go round, but I may check and see if the Napa Gold is a WIX filter like it is for the Dodge.

WIX Filters have a pretty good reputation in the industrial world where engines run for millions of miles and hours.

Same here. Haven't found a bike yet that doesn't like the Silkolene. (Although I use dino oil.)

If you have a dry clutch (Duc) then I would say regular motor oil. If you have a wet clutch, get motorcycle specific oil.

Yamalube Semi-Synthetic. I usually buy a gallon and a quart since it takes 5 quarts to do a change. With an oil filter, a couple new crush washers, and some drive shaft oil, the materials normally run me between $50 and $60.

Pro Tip: My bike's bodywork is right next to the oil drain plug. To avoid a huge mess, I wrap it in a piece of aluminum foil.
