Just got back from a week out in Moab. Crazy weather, one day of clear skies followed by a day of gusting dust storms. When the wind was not howling it was great. Hit up several areas to get the feel of sand, slickrock, and trails.

Longs Canyon, this was up near the top where things got interesting with a steep sandy climb and this big rock. I think it's called Pucker Pass.

A must do for a return trip someday. I could easily have spent another couple of weeks hitting more trails and working on my dirt skills. Sand, ledges, slickrock, gravel. We got a good taste of each and from here on out it's just degrees of level of difficulty.

Nice pictures. We hit dead horse and the resturant last summer as well.... I'm itching to go again.

I was surprised to see more and more side by sides on the trails than dirt bikes. I guess they're smaller than Jeeps and folks can take their kids wheeling on them.

Plus you can drive the piss out of them like a rally car.

I was out there alone two weeks ago on the new 690. I also did the WRT. I did Fins n' things and some of slickrock trail the next day. It was my first time out there and it was awesome!….might have been a bit more safe if I went with someone else though:lol:

Fins n' Things - Killed it a the top of a rock (come to find out that wasn't part of the trail) and flipped over sideways/backwards. I ran it out and luckily the bike didn't come after me. It's hard to see the 20 ft of, almost vertical, climb. I wish I could have gotten a better pic but I seen fuel leaking from the tank and had to immediately drop everything and cater to that. Somehow there wasn't a single scratch on the bike!

Slickrock Trail: I only made it about halfway before the size of the 690 became a bit too much to handle. I was getting tired after WRT the previous day and spending a few hours on Fins N' Things before this. And I still had to drive back to FC afterwards.

Been there before on the MTB, and being dirt noobs we stayed off the trails in the Sand Flats area. Slickrock would've been too much for us. Nice to see some pics of other trails though, and ones of sleepy bikes. Moab's a harsh mistress, to quote a friend. Good to know I'm not alone in dumping a bike. ;)

haha I know exactly what you're talking about as this is my first dirtbike and I only acquired it a week before I went out there. The day before I left I went to VDR to learn a few lessons, but they really didn't apply to the challenges of Fins N Thins and Slickrock Trail. I did tons of research before I left and found mixed reviews on the Slickrock Trail on a big bike. I wish I would have found more honest reviews before I attempted it. I was kicking myself in the head because I didn't bring my mtb, which would have been a blast on the Slickrock Trail.

MTB skills helped save me on some tricky sections. So did a copy of http://www.dualsportriding.com/products/dualsport-riding-techniques-dvd.

Still, if you don't drop it at least once you're not trying.

I definitely feel like I can pick good lines from my mountain biking experience - especially the downhills! - but using the throttle is A LOT harder to control than using the pedals. That and the 690 is so freaking tall that I can barely get one tippy-toe on a flat surface.

after driving 5 plus hrs. i get to Sandflats entrance. The lady goes "day stay?". I go "3 days stay". She replies campground FULL. It was like a punch in the gut feeling. She instructs me to go to the Visitor Center they can tell me where are some available campsites would be. Visitor Center shows me a map that would have available spots. Ended up at Horsethief, which was 9 miles back out of Moab and another 12 miles on 313. Site was good. Cept for the wind on the 2nd nite. After setting up camp, daughter and myself went to Arches. A must see for sure. Hike for almost two hours getting to arches. Tried Delicate Arch but no place to park. Only saw it from a distance at another small parking area. Did chk out Sand stone and Broken Arch.

Rode Slick rock the 2nd day. Glad i found Horsethief. After passing an open air tourist hauler going up the very last climb before the entrance all i saw was alot of goings on. The place was hopping busy. After we rode slick rock went back to camp and ran into friend and her kids. Went back to Arches. Able to find a spot to park. Hiking to Delicate Arch is no walk in the park for sure.

Third day was windy and raining. Chk out Canyonlands. would been great if it was not raining. They say they get 9 inches a yr. they got it that day. Went back to campsite for lunch around 1:30. Some stuff in tent got a bit damp. Let things air dry, thanks to the wind. Noticed a second round of the weather was heading our way. Decided to pack up and head home....

here are some pictures of the adventure...
