View Full Version : Squaw Pass, Saturday Sept 6th

JimDog
Wed Sep 3rd, 2014, 07:11 AM
I know a lot of people are riding Sept 14th (http://goo.gl/A6eaB8) which I'd love to make but can't. Then there is the Durango trip that sounds awesome this weekend (http://goo.gl/LnFYcm) which I also can't make.

But I'd still like to get a ride in this weekend if anyone is up for it. Either day works. Don't care where (P2P, Deckers, etc).

Any takers?

[Update]
Looks like Squaw Pass, this Saturday Sept 6th. Meet at MOCO. KSU 9:00 a.m.

Hey Jim, I'm down to go. Have you tried the Squaw pass route before? if not we should do that. I'll get the map up later this afternoon so you know where it's at.

So Squaw pass this Saturday? Just want to nail something down so I can update the thread title :)

Thanks!

I personally have never found out how to change the thread title, good luck if you are able to do it!

Anyways I am completely down for riding this Saturday. Whatever route is fine by me. Deckers is good, Squaw Pass is good, anything really. If the KSU ia 9am or later I am all over it!

Ok, so Squaw Pass, Saturday Sept 6th, KSU @ 9:00am.

Now we just need a meeting location. Morrison Conoco? Not sure which way we ride to Squaw Pass since I've never been. So if there is a better meeting location speak up! :)

Can do the whole trip in around 2 hours depending. If you start out by catching 70 to Idaho Springs, thats how I prefer to start.... lots of nice sweepers and the road surface is in great condition. Be careful on the back side into Evergreen... many sharp turns with pot holes and gravel... it can be dicey for sure. Enjoy!!!

Actually, now you have that backwards. From Evergreen Pkwy to Mt Evans turn off has been repaved. That section is now one of the best motorcycle roads in the country. The other side from Echo lake to Idaho Springs kind of sucks in comparison. I would recommend taking Bear Creek from Moco up to Evergreen, then taking my own little secret route on Upper Bear Creek to Witter Gulch to Stagecoach Blvd back to Evergreen Pkwy, and on up to Squaw Pass Rd (103). I don't even do the other side anymore, I just go up to Juniper pass overlook and turn around....the new asphalt is that good.

This guy has it right. I just rode it today. The Evergreen side is in awesome shape now. The Echo lake side in bumpy in comparison. I did Deer creek canyon to Conifer to Evergreen to Squaw Pass to Idaho Springs.

I saw this route when I did some googling, Is that fully paved by chance? I wouldnt mind going up the Evergreen side to Mt Evans and then back that route if its all paved. Either way I dont care the route we go I am in on this ride for sure.

Thu Sep 4th, 2014, 09:32 AM
Yes, it is all paved. The section through upper Bear Creek, Witter Gulch, and Stagecoach adds a little extra fun, instead of just taking Evergreen Pkwy straight to Squaw Pass Rd. It's just a big loop that starts and ends on Evergreen Pkwy. Much like taking the Brook Forest/Shadow Mtn loop around Hwy 73.

Here's the route...https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Circle+K/39.6335149,-105.3288858/39.6365958,-105.397467/39.6510917,-105.4161498/39.653059,-105.3461002/39.6853103,-105.3664131/39.6700588,-105.5732438/@39.6607448,-105.3664988,12z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x0:0x9c062cfbae2c535a!2 m2!1d-105.184121!2d39.65314!1m0!1m0!1m0!1m0!1m0!1m0!3e0

I am definitely interested in earlier, say, 8:00am KSU. Too many cyclists and jagoffs on the road after that. Rode it on Monday and the road was in great condition. Dave's route sounds fun, just been doing Kerr Gulch lately off bear creek but new routes are fun.

And Nguyen, here's the top. It's beautiful up there but cold and windy, at least on Monday it was, and the road up to it is beat up with some real bad drivers going really slow. Still a fun experience.

So, assuming all the weather forecasts are right, it should be partly cloudy overnight and into the afternoon before the rain starts. Plan on temps in the 50's at Moco, but in the mid 40's to mid 50's from Evergreen on up. Evergreen's forecast for tomorrow is Hi-63, lo-44 partly cloudy with 80% chance of rain in the afternoon. We should be just fine with a 9am start to get up and back before the rain.
